Northern Michigan University Wildcat 2021-2022 Hockey Thread

I see where college hockey news has said that the reason you won last night is because duluth played the backup. I only saw about ten minutes of the game so from someone who saw it all, is that an accurate characterization?

Not in my opinion. I thought Northern played them straight up the entire game. I also noticed there was much more time/space for Northern to work with than what you see in a CCHA league game. No issues on the breakout or through the neutral zone. Northern outshot Duluth and had periods of extended o-zone time. We'll see how tonight goes.

I honestly think only one NMU goal was one the tender wished he had back (ironically, Cosgrove's). Otherwise, both teams had times they controlled play

That was well played, well coached, and impressive on many levels. Keep it rolling Cats. Tough series ahead against the Lakers.

If someone could explain LSSU's season to me, that'd be great... Beat a good UNO, beat Tech, split with Mankato; on the other hand, get swept by BG, lose to Ferris, only put up 15 total sog for the weekend vs Mankato. I know they were missing players, but aren't they healthy now?

It’s probably no easier to explain than Ferris beating Mankato and losing to St Thomas. That’s hockey.

NMU is not used to getting write-ups like this, so that was great to see. I thought the most significant statement in the article was that Northern needs to avoid being a one hit wonder.
After a series like that, it is validated (or not) by the next performance.

They had 6 regulars out against Bemidji. A couple were back against BG. Most are back now, although they still have a couple of guys out. They had a few weeks where it was hard to even practice because they didn't know how many healthy guys there would be. I think it was either the flu or a bad cold going around the team. Mankato split at Ferris, just as LSSU did. I think the couple of guys still out is an injury thing rather than illness.

Funny how Northern only dressed 4 defensemen against BSU but no one heard a word about it until a month and a half later but everyone else has excuses for their losses...

Northern was dressing forwards at D. Jett Jungels did a nice job back there. Alex Frye took some time back there as well. Coach talked about it in pregame interviews and postgame comments and it was talked about on radio and in the newspaper.

And the next performance was a complete dud.

I am an avid Colgate Raiders hockey fan who will be following the team to Northern Michigan the first weekend of January. I am excited as I have never been to the U.P. and your arena will be #116 for me in which to see a hockey game. I have bought my tickets online (section 1) and reserved my hotel room at the Landmark Inn for both nights. My question is... are there any particular points of interest that I should definitely try to see while I am in Marquette? I enjoy hockey, motorsports, history and travel. Any particular restaurants? I enjoy chicken wings, hot pot, seafood, soups, salads, sub sandwiches, etc. Thanks in advance for any tips.

Enjoy your trip to the Queen City of the UP. The Landmark was a great choice, you'll enjoy that.

Make sure you get a pasty at least once. Best ones in Marquette come from Jean Kay's or Lawry's. Togo's subs are renowned as some of the best around. You'll want to get some time in the local brewpubs like Blackrocks and Ore Dock (walkable from your hotel) or if you pair it with food try the Vierling (a short walk from your hotel). There are some great breakfast places in downtown Marquette, including Doncker's and the Trenary Toast Cafe.

The US Ski Hall of Fame is just west of Marquette , right on US-41/M-28 at the traffic circle in the town of Ishpeming. While you're there, you can go to the other side of the circle to Ralph's Italian Deli for a chance to try some cudighi.

Might be worth a walk just east of the Berry Events Center to into Lakeview Arena, the former home of NMU hockey. The Marquette Redmen high school team has a home game at 1pm on that Saturday. Definitely worth popping into the Superior Dome, the largest wood domed stadium of its kind in the world is attached to the Berry.

I hope you like snow & outdoor activities, lol. The Eben Ice Caves may be ready by then. You will NEED ice cleats, but it's worth it. You should definitely hit Presque Isle & the old Iron Ore Dock in Lower Harbor. Those 2 are pretty easy, unless you decide to hike around Presque (the road is closed in the winter). It can be pretty spectacular out there though & definitely worth it. Just respect Lake Superior. Plenty of people have died during storms like last Saturdays:

As to food options, sub sandwiches is gonna be Togo's, seafood is whitefish (I recommend the whitefish dip appetizer at the Vierling). Also, Lagniappe Cajun Creole.

For a hockey stop, you should stop in to Lakeview Arena, the old NMU rink. It was a Kraft Hockeyville winner a few years ago. If the weather is good, you may want to take a run up to Calumet & the oldest hockey rink in North America, the Calumet Colisseum. It too was a Kraft Hockeyville winner. Houghton (yeah, I said it) also has Dee Stadium, which is still in use, which is the rebuilt Amphidrome. Those 2 rinks are where professional hockey basically began in North America.

Thanks, JJM & Moose, those are great suggestions. I will definitely go to the high school game and log in a new arena. The food options sound fantastic, too. I should note that I wear braces on both legs and walk with a cane, so I won’t be hiking any cliff walks near the Lake. he he he. Again, thanks both of you!! Can’t wait to head your way after the New Year.

If you like cajun food, MQT has a great option in Lagniappe and is located on Washington St. about two blocks from the Landmark.

As mentioned, a pasty is a must when visiting Da Yoop.

If you are interested in a Friday Night Fish Fry, Stucco's pub has an excellent one and is right down the street from the BEC.

Thanks, RaceBoader. Stucco’s it is on Friday evening as I try to have fish-n-chips every Friday. I assume doors open at the arena an hour before puck-drop, right?
