Northern Michigan University Hockey 2017-18: The Grant Potulny Era begins

Re: Northern Michigan University Hockey 2017-18: The Grant Potulny Era begins

Come on, Let's get up for this one Cat fans! Got my WCHA TV ready for 11:30.

I see a different team, a different attitude, at least as much as a person can see on TV. It seemed the last several seasons were the same old same old under the hairless one. I feel like the new coach has made a significant difference, if not huge. We know local fan support has not made an impact.

MMU had the best record in the WCHA in the 2nd half last year.

NMU leads the league with four weeks left. If you saw that coming, why didn't you go to Vegas?

Not sure what that means. I do know the guys need a more sustained effort tonight. We had flashes of dominance last night, but their goaltender came up big several times, and they pulled within one twice late in the game. If the Cats want to stay on top, they will need to win most all their remaining games. That won't happen if they play like last night.

Huh, I was at the game and I thought the cats played pretty well....they are obviously a highly skilled team. In contrast with their Vegas performances, last night they were All World.

Six straight for the 'Cats. Question is can they keep it up and get some help as Mankato has two in hand? Top 3 separated by just four points. Going to be an exciting final stretch.

They performed quite well against BC. In the Arizona State game, the team had flight problems, left their home rink at 6:30 AM ET Thursday and didn’t get to the hotel in Vegas until 2 AM ET (10 PM Vegas time). No practice at Vegas and 20 hour travel day on the day before the game didn’t give them much of a chance.

My only concern was both games they let AA back in late in the game. They need a sweep next weekend, and it won't be easy in Alabama.

NMU had the lead for 118:01 of 120:00 in the series. Once NMU scored its 2nd goal Friday, they led by at least 2 for 76:53 of the remaining 85:19. That’s pretty solid road hockey

NMU Junior Goalie Atte Tolvanen is (15-5-1) with a .906 save percentage and 2.52 goals against average so far this season!!!!!!!!!!!!

By comparison, UAA’s Olivier Mantha his a very similar save % at .904. But his GAA is 3.41 (0.89 higher) and his record is 2-20-4.

In watching that Alaska series, Mantha, to me, was a clear strength of that team. There were several stretches when Northern was sharp offensively, but Mantha was sharper. Without Mantha, Northern scores at least a couple more goals each night.

Mantha's been amazing for UAA his whole career. He's actually put up numbers similar to Craig Kowalski, except for the W/L.

If it wasn't for him, they would be MTU Tim Watters terrible.

I think so too. And from people I taked to, tgose are 6-2 type games. NMU generated a lot of quality scoring chances both nights.

The last time NMU Hockey finished 1st in their Conference was back in 1990-91 when NMU won the NCAA D1 Hockey Title....
