Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

A lot of positive vibes around Marquette for the upcoming 2017-18 NMU Hockey season under new coach Grant Potulny.... Almost everyone you talk to around town is looking forward to how the new NMU Hockey coach will do with the team this year.... Hopefully Potulny and the players will do well this year, make some noise and bring NMU back to being a force again in D1 Hockey!!!!!!! I personally can't wait for the puck to drop, the Wildcats to hit the ice at The Berry and to hear Dave Danis on the radio doing the NMU Hockey play-by-play again.... "Let's Go Cats" as Goofus would say!!!!!!!!

I think Johnson will do very well for your team. I saw him play a couple times - good vision, handles the puck well and knows how to put it in the net. The biggest concern about him is his size - 5'9", but I think he has plenty of skill to overcome size.

2017-18 NMU HOCKEY OPENING WEEKEND

October 6th (Friday) NMU @ LSSU
October 7th (Saturday) LSSU @ NMU

Most exciting game I can remember: December 2005, NMU vs Tech, "Fight Night at the Berry." 191 PIM between both teams, and it would be easier to tell you who didn't fight that night.

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

Another exciting NMU hockey game was on November 30th, 1985 at Lakeview Arena when Minnesota beat NMU (10-9) in OT and NMU's Gary Emmons scored (6) goals.... That was one of the craziest NMU hockey games that I've ever seen live!!!!!!!!!!!!

The two didn't play each other in December of 2005, maybe you're thinking 2007?

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

I saw Brett Hull play against NMU in 1985 & 1986 at Lakeview Arena when he played for UMD.... His nickname was "The Sniper" as his slap shot was unreal!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes. That was also the night I was told to eat a sandwich.

Also, with that December 2007 game:

1. Zaniboni was knocked over (or was nudged, then dove), which led to the Siddall-Foote fight.

2. The Invasion crew thought the Berry was, at the least, uninspiring.

3. I was told by the student section to eat a sandwich.

NMU used to play Hockey East schools on a home & away basis back in 1984 thru 1989 when they were in the WCHA.... Hockey East schools that NMU played back then were:

Maine
Boston College
Providence
UMass-Lowell
Northeastern
Boston University
New Hampshire

They all came to Marquette and played NMU at Lakeview Arena!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lakeview has that Old Time Arena charm to it. Reminds me of the LC Walker Arena in Muskegon.

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

Lakeview Arena (The Sardine Can) was a very cool hockey rink to watch games at when NMU played there.... Located right next to Lake Superior, 4000 seating, seats close to the action, 2 great bars with "The Donor's Room" and "The Blue Line Club" in the building made for some great D1 College Hockey viewing back in the 70's, 80's & 90's.... The place was also very loud during games because of the low ceiling.... "Goofus" was the unofficial NMU Cheerleader during games.... Some classic D1 Hockey battles were played there.... A true gem in Marquette!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at one of those games at Lakeview when Hull score from center ice with a slap shot. I was about 13 yo and was absolutely floored at his shot.

Meanwhile, seems like the primary criticism of the Berry is "it's not Lakeview."

It's not... but until we get an Engelstad to donate $TEXAS for a new barn, let's go with what we have.

The WCHA and Hockey East had an interlocking schedule in the 80s. If I recall correctly, games played counted in league standings (I believe I read that somewhere once).
