Northern Michigan @ Lake State: Battle for the Cappo Cup: Part One

NMU8405

Sieve Boy!
NMU travels to Sault Ste Marie to take on the Lakers.

NMU comes off a sweep of tOSU, while Lake State comes off a loss and a shootout loss (lets just call it a tie like the rest of the NCAA).

Discuss.

it is a tie.it shows up as a tie in the standings and not a loss

Re: Northern Michigan @ Lake State: Battle for the Cappo Cup: Part One

Correct. In the CCHA it goes WINS-LOSSES-TIES-SHOOTOUT WINS. Each team gets a point for the tie. With the shootout winner getting the additional point.

If you want to get technical, its a shootout loss. but hey, that was more than Northern could muster against Miami.

The trip to the Soo was not so nice to the Cats last year, no bell ringing this weekend!

Fantastic story on Kalamazoo K-Wing, and former Wildcat, Kory Karlander.

Must be a quiet year for the Lakers. Nobody posting on their half...are you all content finishing in 10th place this year?

Re: Northern Michigan @ Lake State: Battle for the Cappo Cup: Part One

I'll break the silence on behalf of the "Lake Show" (some of the reason i suspect my counterparts and I have neglected to write on this thread is for fear of attracting the trolls that have been a cancer to our thread this season...think of them as the LSSU version of bootwaltkyle, so i apologize ahead of time). It's hard to say what I expect out of the Lakers this weekend, it's been a strange season to date..I'll use last weekend is a microcosm....Friday night we start our senior goaltender between the pipes and lose 6-2...our defense didn't show up which has happend multiple times this season and our senior goaltender played poorly which has also happend multiple times this season but it was against the top rated team in the nation so no big shock.....with the combination of Friday night's shellacking, Will Acton not playing due to illness and starting a freshmen goalie Saturday figured to be more of the same but instead our questionable defense and our wet behind the ears freshmen goaltender come out of nowhere to basically shut down the nation's top offense to a measly 2 goals and the Lakers got a point on the virtue of a goal by Matt Cowie with 7 seconds in regulation...the same Matt Cowie who had shown basically no semblance of being an offensive defenseman at any point in his first 3 years here but somehow already has a career high 4 goals not even 10 games into this young season....The Lakers have ties (call last weeks a "shootout loss" if you wanna get technical) against the number 1 and 2 teams in the nation but needed a goal in the last 15 seconds to sweep Colgate, it's been a tough season to forecast and until i start seeing some consistency (or lack thereof) out of our team I will hold off on the predicting...Honestly a split or sweep by either team would not surprise me, I am excited to watch how this weekend plays out! I've been following your team per usual so I have some idea, but what is the outlook from an NMU fan on this season thus far??

Re: Northern Michigan @ Lake State: Battle for the Cappo Cup: Part One

A matchup where both teams best goaltenders so far this year have been freshmen. Not really sure what to expect.

Both teams have played the best team in the nation, and Lake State comes out on top in that category, but what that means for this weekend is anyone's guess.

Re: Northern Michigan @ Lake State: Battle for the Cappo Cup: Part One

Is BMW still in net for the Lakers? Any weaknesses for the team?

Re: Northern Michigan @ Lake State: Battle for the Cappo Cup: Part One

As was stated earlier, the Lakers have a freshman goalie who has played well. I would expect to see both goalies in net for the Lakers, unless they decide BMW isn't cutting it anymore. Lake State is prone to some defensive breakdowns, and NMU will need to capitalize.

As always, the NMU Pk will need to be solid to give NMU a chance in both games.

You sure don't ask for much, do ya? ;)

I just hope our PK continues to improve.

Go CATS! I'm having to listen to the game through my Android through a connection that requires multiple satellite hops all because my school district has streaming through iTunes or any other app blocked (YouTube is wide open though...*face palm*. Add that to having to go to a pointless in service that will take up the 2nd and 3rd periods, and you have one ****ed off NMU Alum surrounded by a couple hundred students in BFE Alaska. If the cats implode tonight I may just go postal.

Re: Northern Michigan @ Lake State: Battle for the Cappo Cup: Part One

Awww where is my pal BWK? I wanted to discuss the penalties the Cats took. And see what he would do to improve the team.

Re: Northern Michigan @ Lake State: Battle for the Cappo Cup: Part One

Since I was on the end the Lakers defended twice I didn't see much of how Ellingson played, but I am greatly heartened that he faced 40 shots and only gave up the one goal which wouldn't have been a scoring chance had it not first gone off the NMU defender.

A lot of play in the neutral zones where the teams weren't connecting. I would say even more from the Lakers than NMU, but neither team was very crisp. The Lakers chased NMU around in the first and NMU made them pay with the two goals. NMU took another 5-minute call in the second to let the Lakers back into the game. Phil Fox with a penalty shot that didn't connect.

I would say a relatively even game after the first and the remainder of the 5-minute penalty.

Anyone know why they didn't look at the possible goal with about 4:00 to play? I don't know if the whistle blew or there was someone in the crease but Northern looked to score and it was never reviewed.

Hope to see CJ Ludwig back in the lineup tomorrow.

Lastly, someone figure out a way to get a few more people in the seats. This was likely the lowest attendance of the year for the Lakers and I don't think more than 10 non-family NMU folks made the trip. The first year in a while that the games aren't during a break and nobody shows up. Quite sad, if you ask me.

There was a shot that went off the side goal post about that time. You could hear the "ding" pretty clearly. Lucky break for BMW on that one.
