Northeastern @ UML 10/24/09

Re: Northeastern @ UML 10/24/09

I see Patman's point.
On another note..what's amazing to me (and i'm actually glad for Lowell, and Blais MacDonald especially) is that about 2 yrs ago there were rumors of Lowell hockey being discontinued/dropped. I for one am glad that did not happen.. that's just not a nice omen for college hockey..

Anyways, then, from there on out.. Blais has done a good job & you guys are currently ranked (and i think will go higher this yr) & have a chance to contend if the team pans out as predicted. Great turnaround & glad for the program. Now Patman.. go beat Colgate.. just take it easy Saturday :)

Lowell is under the UMass umbrella. The trustees at UMass wanted to drop Lowell hockey and focus everything on the "flagship" in Amherst.

I'm not totally up to speed on what when down that year but some of my more knowledgeable Lowell fans can give you the full story.

All I know is that UMass is a joke of a program and the Mullins Center is up there with Volpe for the worst rink in Hockey East.

Re: Northeastern @ UML 10/24/09

Fans aren't allowed to discuss a Saturday game when there's one on Friday, too?

I don't know if its just my thing or a thing in general. I view it like the players should... the only thing that matters is the next game until that one is over.

edit: its different though if you play the same team that weekend.

I think there are quite a few fans who see it that way. I guess I just kinda figure that the fans looking ahead days (or even weeks) in advance doesn't affect the team, so I figure there's no harm in it. Of course, if that's a superstition that you and other fans share, I won't argue with it!:) To each his/her own.

Re: Northeastern @ UML 10/24/09

I don't think vader and the storm troopers will be making an appearance this weekend :D

I have no idea what to expect on Saturday from NU or Lowell but will have a better idea after Lowell's Friday night game against Colgate.

Any students making an early season trip to Tsongas? The NU students were great at the "vader" game last season.

i'm also trying to get a few guys together for the family 4 pack. sounds like a good trip.

Re: Northeastern @ UML 10/24/09

The fact that UMass Lowell has a program or not has been an issue for years. Even during their years a DIV 3 national champion contender there were thoughts of abolishing the program. Fact is historically Lowell has a better hockey history than UMASS -Amherst. So every few years during a cycle of economic down turn the trustees look for ways to cut ..hockey is always a sore subject in a small state that fields 2 Div 1 and several Div 3 programs all of which are pretty good by national standards including at the DIV 3 level Framingham, UMass-Boston, Salem State and Westfield. Lowell saved there program with funding of a non school run arena through public private partnership with big Benjamin’s from the Wang family. Who were once the "KINGS" of Lowell. So fret not River Hawks fans the program should be around as long as Blaze can continue not incur any more DUI's.

Also my prediction Lowell 5 NU 2 or 3!

OMG...misguided youth. I have been at nearly every home NU game since my playing days in the early 1980's. Let's not be so quick to make Freshman into NHL prospects...

Our best player and if anyone can argue that there was a better player on this team than Steve Quailer, you don't know **** about hockey! He would have been Cronin's driving cog in the 1st line. He is a unique combo of pure scoring potential with NHL size and speed, who can stick handling through transition. He is out as a result of a cheap hit in an exhibition game.

He will have another year of academic eligibility....as a result. Yes, it's perhaps the greatest FROSH class in history..but if we win 15 games we will be lucky and 20 a blessing from the Gods.

Why? I think even with the loss of Quailman, 15 would be quite a disappointment. Rawlings just has to be mediocre - the power play problems seem to be fixed for the moment and the offense looks fine (no more score two goals and hope it holds). Muench is back and the frosh D look good. I don't have too many complaints so far in the young season, to be honest.

Even though there's not really a Lowell student presence (that I've noticed, though I may have just been at a deserted Tsongas that one night) nor a real NU-Lowell rivalry (anymore), I think that UML is one of the teams I dislike seeing most. Both teams are scrappy and always make for a good series. Looking forward to my soda and hot dog.

I am so old I remember the players going into the stands at NU after some fans (I can't remember why but I am sure it was all the fans' fault :p )

Holy Crap! I remember this too. I wasn't at the game but recall one of the fans that jumped over the glass to fight the Lowell players(name was in the paper). He was a crew team member, we called them crew gods, probably about 6'2" and 215 lbs but just a guess. You know, 150 pounds of that in his shoulders and back! Freshmen year at Stetson West, when we'd finish what was being served as food that evening, this kid would take the all our leftovers, throw em in a bowl, mix in some ketchup/mustard/mayo, and eat it! When I heard about that incident, I thought "no way"! But then saw his name involved and my thought process changed to "Ahhh, no surprise"!

Good times...

Heh. I just remember Jeff Flaherty 'handling' the situation. He had so many penalties in his career they should have given the box a zip-code.

I am glad the goon days are over but the stories from those times have so much more spice!

Re: Northeastern @ UML 10/24/09

yeah, i remember when northeastern students actually made this a fun series. not like last year, when they were saying things like "i'm glad our fanbases don't hate each other any more."

makes me sick.

There is no question that Quailer is one of the most talented individuals on the team, but to be quite honest, I have not seen him be that "go to guy". He isn't an explosive player, he is sneaky good. Players like that make teams great, but it isn't like we just lost Colin Wilson, Nate Gerbe, or Paul Kariya for a year. I'm not sure if I'm reading too much in between the lines, but are you saying we would be lucky with 15 wins because of Quailer's loss? I'm just curious how much of a difference you think it makes. I wouldn't say more than two or three games. IMO our offense is better this year w/o Quailer than last year with him (If you don't count the stretch where Ginand scored on just about every shot).

Hey, I still hate Lowell, you guys can have a horrible team and suck all year and still beat us. Hopefully this year we can return the favor and sink your title hopes :)

Yea me too!

You know what? I hate low, lower, lowest, lowell. The city just smells as soon as you get within 20 miles of the steaming dump. The goalies are sieves and the defensemen are all goons. Never seen a Lowell player I liked (expect Jason Tejama!)

At least Blaise's winning percentage is above his BAC now...

Your women are ugly and your men can't satisfy them.

UMass-Lowell....who knew UMass had a safety school?

That's about all I got. :) :) :) :)

What do you expect from a bunch of "yeah dudes" who only care about partying on the hill. I hate everything about NU... including my wife on game day
