Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Gonna rely heavily on some players returning to form and a deep freshman class.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

you can probably chalk this up to not following northeastern too closely (unless they are playing BU), but I never really noticed reid much. he was obviously outshadowed by guys like mcneely, macleod and silva, of course, but was he really that good?

the fact that San Jose would want to sign an undrafted player after a freshman year with only 28 points makes me a little worried about coyle leaving too, not going to lie.

Reid had one of the best shots in HE this year. Personally, I'd put only Abbott and Atkinson ahead of him from what I saw. I wouldn't be too worried about this meaning anything for Coyle. I think it was a situation where the Sharks saw someone they wanted and decided to go after him while he was still available instead of hoping he was still there next year. They already own Coyle's rights, so there's no reason to rush to sign him.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Well, counting Reid, that's 57 of 108 goals scored not returning (53%) and 138 of 288 total points not returning (48%).... Offensively, we're screwed...

..good point.
All we need is 'one diamond in the rough'.. someone to step in & step up.. hopefully it'll make some of the difference. Those numbers don't lie. I see a lot of 1 goal gms (win, lose), again nxt season. Hopefully goaltending is better than this season & it'll carry us through.

Ask North Dakota if one player can make a difference.. :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Sucks to lose Reid. You guys had a nice finish to the season. Will be interesting if losing those seniors that had great seasons is crushing or if you become like UNH and have another batch step up next year. Your recruiting has been excellent recently for sure.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Hard to blame Reid, he was supposed to start 3 years ago, was ranked in the draft about where Quailer was taken (early 3rd round), but injuries, decisions about development and such held him until this year. I think if Reid came earlier he would have stayed longer, but he wanted a chance to jump into the NHL and did so when he got an offer.

Reid gone is painful for our offense, but I think next year we have a deep team. Tuckerman and Vrolyk are here for the whole season, we have an excellent crop of recruits coming in. With Reid gone, it frees up money to bring Gaudreau in, who I think will be an immediate impact player. I think we'll have some players step it up. I think Ferriero, Quailer, and J. Daniels step it up in conjunction with Tuckerman and Vrolyk. Honestly, if we can bring Gaudreau in early or snatch another late-comer, I'll be very confident about next year.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

I won't be, but I'm a synic, just don't like believing guys who score 10-15 points in a year can blow up and lead a team. We shall see, but, in the words of every sat wars character ever, I've got a bad feeling about this.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Brodie What the ****! You are not playing in the NHL! You could have had a great career at NU and been apart of something here. You can join Newton as career AHL players. I don't underdstand either one of your decisions. You two killed NU. Sucks!

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

I do believe that Ferriero and Qualier can step it up. Unfortunately, I believe that NU needed Reid back to be the nucleus of a second line with scoring potential. I think Tuckerman will take some time to get back to form. Nasty knee injuries take time - look at Quailer's. I am skeptical about JDaniels ability to provide offense. Plays hard and responsibly, but I don't think the hands are there. I don't see Vrolyk as the offensive answer either. I think you will see more offense from Vermeesch, Pimm and Dongara. McLaughlin will be a strong two way guy next year. Would love to see Gaudreau in next season, but it might be best to give his small frame another year of maturing.

You are correct about knee injuries often requiring lengthy rehab periods. Tuckerman's injuries were not knee related. They required shoulder surgeries. He was back on the ice by February, but wasn't allowed/able? to play. IMO when he is healthy, he is a better all around player than Reid. Reid needed someone to set up his cannon shot. He is an average skater and a serious defensive liablilty when playing the point. He is a gunner not a playmaker. OTOH Tuck's game is more complete, he is a better skater and he plays with a real edge.
Robbie Vrolyk also may not have been totally healthy and in shape this year as his season didn't begin until the Beanpot. J Daniels had a severe high ankle sprain in the first game and came back sooner than he should have. That's the kind of injury that where the effects can linger for months. I would describe his game this year as too timid and polite. I don't anyone thought he would fail to score a single goal this year or that his brother would make his mark as a RD. Justin could surprise us next year. If he does, it will be a major plus.

Losing Reid is disappointing, but it's not like we lost a future captain or one of those players who is able to make other around him better.

I couldn't disagree more. There were 4 guys who scored last year, they just lost the 4th. They are now very far from being a contender, they have a great freshman class coming in but they are Freshman, they can't be relied upon. I just don't understand Reid, he is a great college hockey player, but he is not playing in the NHL? He will play AHL, that is better than having a great college career, the AHL will always be there. Look at Newton this year, last I checked he had about 10 points and was a -15. Sounds like he is almost there huh? Such a terrible terrible decision. I really liked him out there but these kids need to stop listening to what they want to hear, be realsitic look around how many guys make it? Maybe Reid will play 15-20 games in the NHL someday, gaurentee it won't be next year. NU has a great class coming in the next 2 years, if Reid was here with a 5th year senior Qualier I thought that was going to be there year.

20 year olds seem more interested in signing faster, they get more money than they would as 18 year olds, and they're playing catch-up with more talented younger players. Reid would have been good, but I think we have enough younger players coming back we'll be able to make up for it. We got hurt by early injuries that nagged us, as Ryecheers said. I think a full offseason to build strength and work on their game will be incredibly helpful in making sure Vrolyk and Tuckerman come back better than ever, and J. Daniels becomes the playmaker we want him to be. I think we'll contend for home ice next year, lots of teams have lost a lot, I think we have one of the best recruiting classes coming in, and we will have one of the best defensive corp as well as 2 good goaltenders.

As long as we don't have any other season-long injuries and those that are injured can get back to speed. We lost Quailer in '09 and he wasn't the same this year, let's hope Tuckerman and Vrolyk can hit the ground running in October, and maybe we can put a full season together.

I thought Quailer was similar to McLaughlin of last year, creating opportunities but unable to complete them. I think the several months off in order to condition and rest will be great for our players.

To me, the bigger worry is who INCH features in their A-Z in the beginning of the year. Last year was Quailer, and he tore his ACL, this year was Tuckerman and he got knocked out with his shoulder injury. INCH seems to curse whichever player they feature for us

Vrolyk is a 15 point guy max, you think he can replace Reid? You can never build anything when you lose guys after 1 year. There is also a lot of speculation that Olesiak will also leave. You think Drew Daniels can replace him?

I can't help but shake the idea that Quailer's going to have to be the guy this year. Who knows though, we could get a great year out of another freshman, or maybe if the '09-'10 class - who will now be juniors - steps it up... I'm still excited for this year but I really was looking forward to watching Reid in his second year.

I agree. Anyone else think that Quailer will be a two year Captain?
