Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

i can't wait till 2024 when you're still arguing about this!

and unh will still think that the only reason gaudreau didn't go to durham was because of admissions.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

With media day right around the corner (Monday) and polls being released across the board, I decided to take a stab at preseason predictions myself. Polls may be dumb, but they are fun to put together

1- Providence: The most complete team. Arguably the best goalie in the country. I expect Jankowski to develop further, plus top scorer Mauermann is back.
2- Boston College: Questions persist about who will put the puck in the net, but they will score their share. They have the best defensive corps in the country, IMHO, may not give up more than 2 goals a game. Demko is a top 3 goalie in the conference.
3- Northeastern: the Huskies return 9 of their top 10 scorers, in addition to Clay Witt, who completes the trifecta of top HEA goalies. The NU powerplay will improve (I believe). I expect Roy to explode this season, and Szmatula will be right behind him. Secondary scoring will be plentiful for the Hounds.
4- boston university: Quick rebound for the Terriers. The top American since Mike Modano will certainly help. Uber talented group coming in, increasing skill throughout the lineup. O'Connor is solid in net, and new recruit LaCouvee can push him if he falters. Over-reliance on mostly freshmen would have me worried, but the overall talent level puts them above the next few teams.
5- Vermont: my surprise team this season. Hoffmann proved he can be a legit D1 goalie, though Santaguida will likely get some time rotating in. Reynolds back from injury will cushion the blow of losing McCarthy, plus Puskarich is the real deal as a scorer. Offensively talented blue line as well will help pick up some scoring slack from the forwards.
6- Maine: Most underrated player in Hockey East in Devin Shore. He and Hutton will carry the load offensively, but after that, secondary scoring questions exist. Losing Lomberg will hurt them. Biggest question exists in net, after losing Ouelette- can Morris step up and be "the guy?"
7- Notre Dame: Similar to UNH below, the lost a ton of scoring from last season, in addition to their 4 year starter in net. Ranked above the next two teams because I expect Petersen to be a stud, plus they retain talent in Tynan, Lucia, Hinostroza, and Russo
8- UMass-Lowell: Lost the best goalie in the nation, their top defenceman, and one of their top offensive weapons. LOTS of new faces coming to the River Hawks this season, plus no clear successor to Hellebuyck in net. I trust Norm's system, but wonder if the talent drop off will be too much.
9- New Hampshire: Lost the most scoring in Hockey East from last season (61.1%), two of their top 3 goalies, plus lost their goalie in the offseason due to an off-the-field altercation. They seem to have a plan in place for goal, accelerating recruit Tirone for the 2nd semester, but that might be too late to save the season.
10- Merrimack: Lost top scorer and leader in Mike Collins, and lost their top recruit before the academic year even began. They get the nod over UMass due to the difference in goalie- I trust Tirronen over Mastalerz.
11- UMass: Lost their top 3 scorers. Getting Montour for the second semester will be a needed boost. I expect Yevenko to develop nicely as a defender. Mastalerz returns in net, but I just don't see the Minutemen scoring much.
12- UConn: The new guy. Lost their top 3 scorers in addition to their top goalie. Cav will get them up the ranks soon enough, but they will toil at the bottom for a couple of years.

And that's it. Open to criticism, anxious for puck drop. Go NU.

Seems like a pretty solid analysis to me (bad omen for you ;)). The one change I would suggest is dropping UVM from one to three places, because the "surprise" with UVM is almost always their under-performance. Who knows, maybe this will be the year they show up where they ought to.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

The 2016 recruiting class is loaded now with Shea, Jozefek and Filipe. Those are going to be some fun teams to watch.

As for this season, with Witt coming back, they should be able to finish with a home playoff spot. Should have last year. Roy will be a Hobey finalist.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

....BU, BC get Gaudreaus from NU, NU get the Colliers and Ferrero's from BU and BC...

I don't think I'm going too far out on a limb in saying that Brendan Collier is no Cody Ferreiro.

Do not rewrite history. Cody had solid Sophomore and Junior years. If it was not for the crap coaching he received here, and some of his own dumb stuff, he probably would have done better.

As for NU being in third place, um, the top two defenseman on this team cannot skate. There might not be one guy back there who can make a side to side pass. Any team that puts full pressure on our guys is going to wipe us all over the ice.

Look for NU to be in the home ice conversation, but the blue line is going to be an issue, and if Clay Witt is the post Beanpot Witt, we are in HUGE trouble.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

I would take third place but I agree with some other posters that the D is a huge question. New guys need to be above average to improve on D.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

Aw, c'mon......rewrite history? Coaching at NU didn't make him what he was.....that happened before he arrived. BC dodged a bullet when they were able to pare him off their roster. Ferriero was a somewhat offensively talented player who was undisciplined on and off the ice. NU's lack of talent made it hard for the Staff to bench him as much as he deserved to be. His 'own dumb stuff' hurt his own development as a player and the teams chances to be better than they showed. IMO, any blame the Staff deserves for its handling of Cody is for being too lenient for too long. Agree with the rest of your post. Question: Where did Nathan Ferriero move on to?

Agree totally with the second part of your quote re team defense and which Witt we're going to get.

Disagree with the first part of your quote. You can't make a case for "crap coaching" when the player wasn't coachable. Jerry York at some point figured out that Cody was no Benn in that particular respect and must be forever grateful to us for taking this problem off his hands. (Also, for all intents and purposes, sending JG as a replacement.)

York never coached Cody though. And I should have written crap coaching better. To that JM and company did a bad job of managing him throughout his career. Not tough when they should have been, to tough when they did not need to be. They more or less screwed him up a kid who should have been a top scorer in this league. Cronin would have done a 100% better job with him if he had stuck around.

Cronin would have kicked his butt all over the place. Since the kid was loath to take responsibility for his own screwups, he would have lasted two seasons, at most, before he quit. We never would have seen Nathan, who arrived two years before he was ready and before the coaches thought he was ready. Last I heard, he was going to play juniors somewhere. I'm simply not interested enough to try to find out where.

Nathan is skating in the USPHL I believe. Not sure how he's doing, but that's where he is.

Hockey East writer's poll was released. Predicted NU at 4, after PC, BC, and bu. Roy picked for All-HEA First Team.

I can't find that article. Do you have a link?

Who gives s F if you were interested enough to look it up.

If he wasnt ready I doubt he would have had the success he did. Most points on team per minutes played etc.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014 Offseason: Resurrection's Over....Now What?

I think PC and BC are probably the best two teams in the league. Then you have a middle class that includes everybody but UMASS, Merrimack, and UCONN. Those three will stink big time.

The middle class will be all mixed up, 3-9. Not much difference between those teams. All strong in some areas, really weak in others.

Guy that I think really comes into his own and knocks one of those 5 off the preseason team is Jankoswki at PC. First round draft pick a few years back. Was ok his first year, started to come into his own more last year, I would think now is the time for him to really own the league and earn that first round pick status.

I think NU is getting ranked high due to the play of Witt pre-Beanpot. I am guessing nobody is looking at the bu series, and the UNH series where UNH basically scored at will on us those last two games, otherwise I think we would be closer to UNH in these polls.
