Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

One negative from last night...Saucerman. Trying to break out with passes in front of his own net, bad pinches and losing countless 50/50 battles behind his own net. He tries to play like Erik Karlsson/Mike Green and it just doesn't work. I like his offensive game, it's too late now, but he probably should have been moved to wing a year or two ago. With the rest of the D playing better, he stuck out like a sore thumb.

On a better note, I thought McMurtry played his best game as a Husky. Limited the turnovers, won battles down low, sprung a few odd-man opportunities with break-out passes and was ultimately rewarded with the GWG.

Saucerman is always going to be a bad spot.

+1 to both of these statements. Sauce seems to be give us 3.5 F, 1.5 D when he's out there rather than the traditional 3/2 split. Which may be why the PP has been so effective lately, but at 5v5, he is a liability. I hope Cockerill, who was billed as an offensive defenseman with a cannon for a shot, can develop more on the D side of the puck than Sauce has in his time here. It would be nice to have a couple true 2-way defenders on the blue line. Incoming recruit Barry is seen as one, Benning can be, and Owens was billed as one. Cockerill would add another dimension to that. Remain to be seen if it'll happen, but hey, why not hope?

A sweep this weekend and they are only 1 game away from .500! Both in league play and total record.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Santini is out tomorrow, per the BC Kid. Big loss for the birds on the back end.
Unfortunately, Benning is likely in for us. Big loss for the dogs on the back end. He was the worst player on the ice in all three BC games last year. If he is the featured defender for us this weekend, we will be swept. Jerry York is licking his chops just thinking about it. He will run his speed lines straight at him knowing he can't skate with them. NU coaches will not adjust - have never sat Benning when he is exploited. Our only chance will be Witt standing on his head.

Why woudl York pick on Benning? Much slower skaters in Gunn, Lawlers, and saucerman. Benning was a freshman last year being asked to play top 2 minutes because the rest of the bunch are nothing. I would expect to see Owens and Schecter to be in the lineup tonight. Better skaters.

You are just making noise, trying to stir the pot a bit. Perhaps you haven't been to many games this year and/or haven't seen Benning play recently. He has improved noticeably this season. Last year, BC made a lot of Ds look silly. They had the best line in the country. Benning's game has improved (as it should have). BC has a strong offense, but its NHL futures are on the blue line this year.

Its hard to hide defensemen, even when playing at home. And I agree with Retsap, there are much worse skaters and puck movers on this team then Benning. Have you watched Dax? Even Cockerill is not exactly fleet of foot out there

Which 6 or 7 guys that go back there tonight I have no idea. I do disagree with Retsap on who will be out there though. Tuesday was Schecter's first game since before Thanksgiving, and he has played 5 overall this season. Just because he can skate does not mean he can play. Cause he cant. I would expect Cockerill to be back in that spot, unless he is sick or injured. From there, who knows?

As for York licking his chops, he knows how to coach his team to play NU. Be patient, do not be overly aggressive on offense, the dmen typically sit back to keep NU from getting out of the zone easy, (we seem to get less odd man rushes against these guys then anyone else) but when NU is on offense, aggressively challenge and look to break quick. Also challenge the point men because they are pretty good at turning over the puck, but not good at recovering.

There is no secret to this. Also - BC has not given up more then 2 goals in a game since the Gophers crushed them back in November, and some of those games Demko did not play. But they are not that dynamic up front as they used to be, middle of the pack so far this year. Shots on goal per game stats they are right where NU is, ahead of us, but not by much.

Our defense has held up better then I would have thought to this point. I mean the 2nd Yale goal should never have happened, that was kids stuff, but it has not been the orange cones I expected it to be. Feels like not using Dax and Sauce in high leverage situations and cutting back on their minutes some has helped. Not using DD at all has been helpful. And the biggest thing has been Fennell. He has been solid since put into the lineup against UNH. If you try hard enough, you can almost make the argument that he maybe the reason the team has made this run, since he came in, the team started winning, 7-4-1 with him in the lineup. He stays at home, does not try to do much, and they have been using him in high leverage situations. The coaching staff actually coached the kid up into somewhat of a player compared to what he was when he got here. Gotta give credit when its due.

I can agree with most of this, especially the part about Fennell, who is my candidate (so far) for the Most Improved Player award this year. AS for the second Yale goal, I believe the shot nicked our D and canged direction just enough to foll DRoy and catch the inside of the goalpost. It was the first goal that looked like we'd angered the Goal Gods, as it deflected off at least one of our players and made a 90 degree turn into the net.

Puck luck seems to even out over the course of the season. Perhaps we'll have our turn tonight.

Actually, I thought Benning looked fairly solid in the two St. Lawrence games and the Yale game.

This team has had puck luck this season. This team typically has a ton of puck luck, its why they don't lose by more goals.

My issue on the 2nd goal was how Yale scored it. A break-out where they can pass to the guy streaking down the MIDDLE and he can make a drop pass in the Middle of the ice? What are you supposed to protect? The middle of the ice. Where was the back check? Where was the dmen stepping up there. cant let that stuff happen. Keep them to the outside.

Focusing on Benning because he was the worst against BC last year and he plays 25 minutes per game no matter how bad he plays. Don't love the other poor skaters, either, but they don't get that special treatment (except, perhaps, for Sauce, which is another head-scratcher).

I don't agree that he has improved. I don't think he has the athleticism to improve. He has gotten more points recently, but really has just been the beneficiary of being on the ice a ton. Look at his two assists from the Yale game. Nothing special. In both cases, it was the next pass and the shot that were special. However, Fennell's pass to ZAR on the first goal was special. Fennell has been the best Dman on the ice during this stretch.

mmmmkay:) seriously, good luck though. I think most BC fans like to see NU do well but of course not against us

That is so unlike you! Positively aggressive! Who got on to your computer while you you were getting fresh lemons to suck on?:D

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

in order to go 2-0 this wknd.. we need to go 1-0 first.
this is about the time bc starts getting it going. fully expect them to start the wknd where they left off last. also.. this will be the huskies 4th gm in 8 days. may end up being a factor this wknd. that being said.. go Huskies.

what do you have against fresh lemons?

btw - as for that SBN article kindly posted by CHRR - total BS by Madigan on which goalie is going to start tonight. Its Witt. Lets not pretend that Roy is pushing Witt for playing time based off of the St. Lawrence and Yale games. Building up Roy's confidence is fine, but stop it. Do not play games just because you have suddenly gone on a bit of a roll. The yearly JM get hot between November and mid January roll we have all come to know and love and get our hopes up rolling into February.

Enjoying the nice run, but lets not get overconfident here and decide its goalie rotation time. Give Roy credit for his two wins, and keep him pegged to the bench against BC.

Unless of course the quotes were taken from Tuesday's game and the author chose to make something out of nothing.

Hard earned tie. Both goalies looked very impressive. I think fatigue may be setting in a bit for NU.. could not hang on for the 'w' but nevertheless.. we'll take the HE point.

Earlier start tomorrow.. hopefully can keep it competitive again. Go Huskies.
