Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Huskies01 is only giving his opinion and he has a passion in seeing NU do well but it seems he has been disappointed in the past as we all have. I feel after watching the game on NU extreme that we can play with anybody in the country as any HE team can. We started off incredibly bad and the team has to dig its self out of a huge hole but they can they have the fire power and now a new self confidence in goals against. If this team starts to score goals as they should we could see a very interesting 2015. JM is starting to get this team playing better and this team if they stay on course and again don't start taking those stupid penalties could actually do some damage in the HE playoffs.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Huskies01, Thanks for keeping us grounded. I was thinking about getting "carried away" after Saturday, but you helped me see the leaden lining.

The Minn. game was probably the best and most complete game we've played in quite some time. The much maligned Defense did its job and gave the puck to the offense which did theirs. It's as simple as that.
The emergence of Stevens/Rosenthal line, a.k.a "The Jersey Boys" has given us additional scoring punch to go with Roy's line and Szmats line (which seems to be cocooning lately). The newcomers seem to be adjusting. Rosie had 9 shots and showed the kind of speed needed to go around the defense and get quality chances. Collier looks to have been reborn as he has started to create opportunities along with Sikura. They are the most offensive 4th line players we've had in recent memory.

One of the most interesting developments in the improvement in #61. I did a double take when I noticed the he and Sauce were the Ds sent out during the final faceoff in our zone vs. the extra attacker. With the timeouts, all of the Ds had time to rest, but these were the two that the coaches wanted on the ice. Think about it. That's quite a compliment paid to a kid who came here as a walkon with zero scholarship $ and very modest expectations.

All of this is encouraging, but it will have sent a warning to PC that they'll need to bring their "A" game Wednesday. If we win that game, maybe we can take this surge seriously and allow ourselves (even H01) to get a little bit carried away.

I like it!!! Note to NU Sports Information and NU Athletic Marketing (Doghouse too): Don't want to tell you how to do your jobs but you really need to run with this moniker (and maybe hire HH as your clever wordsmithing consultant).

I love it as well. I'll see what we can do with this- definitely going to be put on a sign, at the very least. Well done HH!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Enjoyed watching the Bruins game last night even though they lost. Josh Manson was very good for Anaheim. The Bruins announcer, Jack Edwards, spoke to the Anaheim coaches before the game about Josh’s progress and they said he was a very pleasant surprise. Everyone in their organization assumed that he needed at least a year in the AHL, but they were wrong, he is playing at NHL level now.
With a minute and a half left in the third period the Bruins pulled their goalie and Manson played until the end of the game. I was surprised at Manson’s skating, his passing and his decision making, but not at his physical play. He had two good hits on Lucic. At six foot three 220 Pounds he could have 10 good years in the NHL. Hope it helps NU’s recruiting on the West Coast.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Meant to write this the other day: great win the other night but can we stop overrating it? The DogHouse tweeted "Nothing sweeter than this victory" and Mike McMurtry said "I can see the faces of the people who doubted us". Jeez. This team was picked to go the the Garden and be a borderline tournament team. We aren't UCONN in our first year in HE, who celebrated beating BC like they won the national championship (and rightfully so). If they go get swept by PC this week, are the doubters allowed to come back? Go on a streak. Get over .500. Win a road game. Sorry for the rant, but the "we won the National Championship by winning a November OOC home game" attitude is killing me.

I agree. One of the players interviewed after the game said "we know we are a good team". Really? Start proving it now. Does this mean that every team that beats a top ranked team is suddenly good? If we are good after our win against Minnesota, does that make Harvard great after sweeping bu and UML last weekend?

This is a trick question, right? Harvard is great so far this year. They are 7-1-2 overall and 3-0 on the road against Hockey East royalty. So, to answer your question (I think), our win against Minnesota does not have anything to do with Harvard being great. Harvard's record so far this year against stiff competition is what makes them great.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

What would like the player to say in an interview, that they were a mediocre team? And it is true it was a huge win and the team can build on it. To answer the question are they a good team"yes" this is a good team, with some real good talent. They have started slow but they have been playing really well of late. It's important to note that they have had some key injuries to start the season and now with everyone healthy lets see who is right , the bloggers who have told us over and over again that this team is not a good team. There have been many teams that have started bad and win championships. Not saying that this team is going to win championships but they are not a bad team. I believe that this team is just starting to hit there stride , they will stumble but they will be tough to beat . Hopefully tomorrow they will build on last saturdays win and no it was not the stanley cup it's one win and we need to see more but this is a good team

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

So I thought I'd add my $.02. I really think that our Defense was shaky coming in to the season to begin with. What compounded the problem was that Witt was not playing. Roy did his best to keep us afloat but is just not at the level that Witt is. There was added pressure on the D because of the shaky goaltending which then lead to our D making even more mistakes. Because our D was making too many mistakes our Offense felt like they couldn't count on the D and had to help them out too much which crippled our Offensive attack. Now that Witt is back, I think that our D can focus on doing the right things, taking care of the puck, and it takes the pressure off of our Offense who can now focus on properly breaking out of our zone and scoring goals. Great win against Minnesota, but we really need league points! Taking 2pts from PC would be huge.

Oh, and I like the "Jersey Boys" idea too....any artists in the Doghouse this year?? Maybe a banner that looks like the logo from the Broadway play Jersey Boys with each players # on each end?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

I think a split is coming against Providence. Gillies has been on a roll, but the Huskies have been buzzing, look for the momentum to carry over. Home teams hold serve.

As for the Jersey Boys gimmick, I love it. I'll see what I can do, talk to some people, see what we can come up with.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Psyched for Wednesday's game, im thinking NU is due for another win, this would be huge in the slower part of the schedule, the womens team put on a tremendous game vs Union tonight shocked they lost,( off topic, I know) im just saying that both teams are finding their strengths in spite of poor coaching, (madigan) and its likely could play .500 from here on in.

loved the Jersey Boys idea, and yeah they play well together

Not that you need it, maybe you do, heres the HD stream link http://portal.stretchinternet.com/northeastern/portal.htm?eventId=168720&streamType=video

Correction: PC goaltenders have been on a roll...Ellis the backup shut out UNH at the Whitt two weekends ago as Gillies was disciplined for breaking team rules. Since that game, Gillies has back to back shutouts. PC hasn't given up a goal in over 221 minutes of gameplay.

Looking forward to breaking that streak this week. Maybe in less than 7 seconds this time around :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Anyway, lots of post game arm chair right wings out there tonight and the discourse is good. Clearly, this isn't a great team by any stretch of the imagination, but it also may not be as bad as we thought either. With a healthy Witt, better D and more clicking K Roy and others we can certainly play better than our record to date would indicate and to do that we have to just take them one at a time and climb out of the hole.

We have a big test home and away with PC and I will be in attendance on Wednesday. These games, are perhaps the most important games left before the break as if we can win them, it will do wonders for the team confidence.

I do think the Gophers may have taken us a bit too lightly which is to be expected coming off a big win at BC and perhaps a long day of travel from the Twin Cities.

There are lots of glass 1/2 full guys on here and that's fine, but there are also lots of realists, who like myself, have been following the team religiously over perhaps 20, 30 and even 40 seasons of hard-ache now, and we expect more.

I also judge success in wins over BC, BU and Beanpots and until we do that more than but once in a blue moon I won't be fondly on board with JM or any other coach.

So, here is the history as I know it to be, in the event that you are a 18 to 30 year old, with blinders on or your eyes closed, this is the issue, and has existed long before Madigan.

I knew and I liked Fern, and he liked me. He was a players coach but a vast majority of his early tenure was spent in ECAC league play in the 1970’s where the team was mediocre at best and sometimes downright awful. However, to his credit, he hit his coaching stride in his 50‘s in the 10 years form 1979 to 1989 the team was pretty dan good in both ECAC and the newly formed HE winning 3 pots, an ECAC crown, 2 bids to the national tournament with a final 4 and even a HE championship (regular season) but Ferns career also spanned a time when the administration could have cared less about winning or losing, they had a former Bruin and future NHL Hall of Farmer behind the bench and they felt they were lucky to have him .

When he retired the current Administration again did the PC thing and gave the job to long time assistant and former Bruin, Don McKenny, who was Fern’s best bud, teammate and long term assistant and in my view past his expiration date to take over the program, to his credit, he was nearly 60 when he took the job and we labored through 2 pretty poor seasons in terms of results before he retired in 1991-92. BTW, our boy JM was an assistant on those teams.

Then we got Ben Smith, a rich kid, whose father was a US Senator, prep schools, Harvard and all that crap, even though he had been 1-24-1 at Dartmouth the year before we hired him. Ironically, his only win came against NU. Do you think we did a national search to get him? Fired by the Big Green, he was, to that point in time, the shortest tenure in ECAC coaching history in any sport, for a position that wasn’t considered an interim coach. Today I cant imagine getting a job off of that kind of record as a HC.

I never wanted him at all, he was a Harvard/Yale guy who had been coaching with enemy Parker over at BU, when NU was still covered in blacktop, half the students lived at home and arrived on the Green Line each weekday morning. He had one good season at the helm and we reached the tournament but he also never won 20 games.

I am told that Smith knew more about hockey in terms of the game as it presents itself on a chalk board (X's O's) than any coach we have had, and to that extent lots of people took notice and recognized it and he eventually wound up coaching the US national team. Later, he established himself as great woman’s coach, as the top man for 3 Olympic squads.

The we got Crowder, another former Bruin, UNH guy and in my view, the worst of the lot, he never finished higher than 4th and also never won more than 13 games in nearly a decade as HC. After some flash in the pan success at UML that saw the Riverhawks have their first 20 win season at the Division 1 level, (FYI they were a DIV 2 powerhouse along with Merrimack for most of the 20th century) and an NCAA tournament bid in 1993, he had 2 more subsequent seasons that boasted a .640 winning %. during his tenure.

However, it's too bad that success didn’t translate to NU as his winning % was the worst since H. Nelson Raymond got permission form Honey Fitz to skate the team on the Duck Pond in the Public Garden. Bruce would be the 1st to tell you that he arrived at NU at the wrong time when the administration was trying to make major strides academically and thus he didn’t have the support of the administration in the way that he had at Lowell. Excuses, excuses! Don't get me wrong , it wasn't all bad as he did bring my pal Bruie Racine back to Boston for a year and we got **** faced like it was 1987 a few times, for that I am grateful.

That leads us to Cronin, who I believe was the best coach we have had to date historically, a local kid whose father and uncles played for the Huskies in the 60’s under Jim Bell. He was a Colby guy and a dam good hockey player in his own right with lots of DIV 1 offers, but he opted for the education and valuable NESCAC connections which in New England go further than even a BC degree if you ask me.

He took a bad team and made it good fairly quickly but likely had NHL coaching aspirations on day one of his arrival on Huntington Ave., to his credit he recruited top players like we had not seen before. He may have done it with a few early phone calls, you know the way UNH has been doing it since tricky Dick arrived in Durham in 1990.

There is no question he and Roby didn’t see eye to eye and after his recruiting violation (hick up) you could see Brian Burke in the stands on several occasions to know and confirm that it would only be a matter of time before he would be gone.

I will say this the players who played for Cronin loved the guy and that can be said of rafter rats right thru the full scholarship starters. However, again even in Cronin’s selection I don’t think there was ever a national search. This is unheard off in a college division that competes at this level. A division that is the equivalent of the SEC in Football. In late April 2011 the Toronto job became his and all of a sudden its mid July and we still don't have a hockey coach. The entire college hockey community is flabbergasted when Madigan is named.

Here is why, JM on paper is the least qualified candidate since Herb Gallagher head coach 1939 to 1956, who was a prep school hockey standout locally in Newton and went on to Caption the team, he even made the team without even trying out. I will add he was also the greatest AD in school history with all sports teams attaining nearly a .640 winning percentage in his 22 plus years at the helm of the Athletic Dept. but his teams were horrific when he was the coach, it was a time when it wasn't important who coached or what resume they had.

In Madigan, they again made no national search. He was cherry picked and although a scout and the only husky since Gallagher to coach the team since 1955, it was not the best decision in hinde sight.

It must have seemed like a great idea at the time as Jim is a well liked guy and has done many jobs for the university successfully, but he had been away form the game for nearly 2 decades. It had been 19 years since he had last been an assistant hockey coach in the early 1990’s and since that time he had worked in both Facilities Management and the Office of Business Development, with a short stint in athletic department sandwiched in between.

Those roles do not seem suited to be a Men's hockey coach at the DIV 1 level.

Jim was a good player too, perhaps an 80+ point player, he was very level headed and smart with puck and one of Fern's favorites. I just think that in the 20 years he was essentially gone form the game, the game at the college level has changed in many ways.

I just would like to see a national search for a coach when and if JM retires or if his contract is not renewed, because as far as I can tell that has never happened.. not once in nearly 90 years.

we should just drop down to the EZAC.. what?.. you mean not EZ anymore?? all those schools recruited serious Coaches & they good @ hockey now?..!?.. well we can always just walk over Lowell.. what?.. they got good Coach too!?.. well PC isn't that?.. what.. good Coach there too?.. yup they both been legit for a while now..
okay.. well.. we just handle that HE upstart UVM & Sneddon.. what!?.. they good & nationally ranked!? top 10?.. well we'll just sweep Merrimack.. and.. what!?.. not happening..!

well.. there's always Harvard @ the Beanpot.. yeah right.. oops..

I feel your pain Rossi.. they just don't run the goings on @ Matthews like they run the rest of the U.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

In this day and age, there's just no need to launch a "national search" in the same sense as a national search for, say, a new dean or provost. The college hockey world is very compact and tightly knit. When a D1 position opens up, the resumes of established coaches looking to move to bigger programs and of up-and-coming assistants looking to become the head guy just magically show up. And at the same time, the ears of decision-makers start getting bent by friends, associates, and mentors eager to put in a good word for one or more of the applicants.

But that's not how it works at NU--at least the last time around. IIRC, the only two credible outside applicants were Darren Yopyk and Greg Carvel (now the HC at St. Lawrence). Supposedly, Mike Cavanaugh sniffed around but apparently didn't like the smell. Apparently, the word was out that the NU job was wired for an inside guy from the start so most of the likely candidates just didn't bother.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

..irony here is.. if Madigan were AD.. he'd have done better job with the hockey hire than the casual, joke of an approach the current guy in charge put in. Mike Cavanaugh would have had the deal.. he didn't have the best interview (ask Roby.. Madigan did better! )..

Anyway, as has been said.. when you are in a top conference in the sport.. either get competitive or get out!
UAB just dropped football today.. and this is a school that was Bowl eligible this yr.. per ESPN..

NU had a window.. it is now shut until some major $$$ & effort is put in, to revive the facilities & sport. If you build it.. then they come! (not likely with current cast of characters).
Until then.. we can always beat up on Holy Cross.. oh.. they just slapped Brown around 5-0.. okay then UConn.. :) .. they just getting warmed up folks!

Anyway, hope we can get a few by Gillies tonight. He's on a roll right now. G'luck team.

Madigan.. do the right thing. Do it. !!!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Well that was a pretty inspired rant/history lesson by Rossi. No idea why, but sure, its a message board. Cannot wait for the book to come out.

All signs point to low scoring. So first team to two goals wins?

Cant go again. Hope to watch some on the inter-webs.
