Sebastien is not the answer. He is prospering in the healthcare business near Sacramento. While he follows the team closely, I don't expect him to return anytime in the foreseeable future. He did a terrific job here and for the Houston Aeros (Minn.'s AHL team), but I believe he is putting his Summa Cum Laude NU degree to good use outside of hockey.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Just got back (3 hour drive back to Buffalo), here's what I thought. My exuberance about this game all week was tempered by a cold today - so I'm getting these thoughts down before I pass out.

1. Last week against Vermont they looked flat. Tonight they played full of life, actually both teams did. It was a fast, hard-hitting game. Neither team was able to set up in the other team's zone for long.

2. NU set up the shots and chances they needed to, they just weren't going in. They got some odd-man rushes, crashed the net on rebounds, got possession down low behind the net, forechecked and played tough on defense. Nothing to complain about.

3. Witt looked fine except for the second one. First one was a giveaway near the blue line, a 2-on-1 that was played very well by Colgate. Second one, the guy flow across the ice and it somehow trickled over his shoulder short-side. He'll want that one back.

4. Tanner Pond was hitting everything he could. Benning did a good job pinching up along the boards on offense. Lauwers was pretty physical out there too. Colgate's goalie didn't make any amazing saves but he just made the ones he was supposed to, and the puck just wasn't bouncing the right way when we needed it to.

5. Neither team did any damage on the power plays. But you have to think, NU had a couple power plays in the first period where a goal really could've set the tone. A lot of the effort and physicality out there came to haunt them in the second and third periods as the penalties started up.

6. I was disappointed not to see any other NU fans there. Like we're the only ones in the Buffalo/Rochester/Syracuse area who can make this trip? It was a nice day to see the fall foliage on the way there, good bbq at the Dinosaur (original one) in Syracuse, good beers pre-game in Hamilton. It was a ways to go to see a shutout loss, but I only get to see 1-2 games a year, being there beats watching on a screen.

7. Colgate is a very picturesque campus. Just that it's a left turn off the middle of nowhere. Colgate has a decent in-game atmosphere, but their student section did next to nothing the entire game when someone wasn't flinging a free t-shirt at them. The fans around me seemed genuinely offended that NU didn't get called for a penalty any time they dared to hit a Colgate player. I know that there isn't a huge population base around there to draw from, but 1500 for the home opener when you're ranked top-10 in the country is kinda lame.

8. Overall, if NU gives this kind of effort consistently, they're going to win their share of games. The puck isn't going to stay out of the other team's net for long. I won't be at Saturday's game, we decided not to make it a multi-day trip (partly because I have to be up early Sunday for the Bills game).

Mcbain 75 was spot on. The effort was there, however the power play is something that needs to be retooled. You have arguably the 2 most dynamic forwards in HE and on that PP they look at best mediocre. There needs to be someone or if not one of those 2 that can QB this PP. this power play is so easy to defend and yet we cannot see that. We are 0 for something, it is sad to see Roy and Szmatula not even get chances and they must be extremely frustrated and if you seem the game it shows it. Roy without a goal in 2 games and yet worse no quality chances. For this team to make any waves this year these 2 must get going. On the positive the defense played much better with allot more grit and that is encouraging. The forwards need to get grittier and keep crashing the net.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

I pretty mch agree with the sentiments. The loss sucks and the PP needs work, even with Colgate failing to score you could just watch them in the zone making open lanes and chances while we just kind of pass around but don't actually achieve anything or get a better opportunity by doing so. I do like Cockerill, but lets be honest, he's in his first couple of games at a new level. The game is faster. He's not going to be able to analyze as fast as he needs to as the leader of the powerplay yet. Despite that though, the team looked good and heavily outchanced Colgate despite only slightly outshooting them. A lot of blocked shorts and missed nets, which is hopefully not going to become a theme, but it seemed like Acadia was blocking our shots left and right too. Don't know if we're settling for bad chances, unlucky, or what. But it doesn't seem like it's time to nuke the team and start from scratch, which was a consideration last Sunday. They'll be fine. Maybe not the dream team we wanted, but fine.

Also,

The fans around me seemed genuinely offended that NU didn't get called for a penalty any time they dared to hit a Colgate player.

The Colgate radio annoncer was even better. He was actually really good most of the game. But during that sequence in the second period where we killed off a penalty then went down to 3 on 5 on another two calls pretty much immdiately afterwards, he complained about at least three more things we should have been called for, then complained how terrible it was that Colgate was on a 5 on 3 this early in the season when they haven't had a chance to practice it much yet.

How is Roy's Hobey quest going???

Help me Hobey Roy Kenobi. You're my only hope.

In all seriousness, please help us. Get some shots on net, be more aggressive. Our most talented player seems to be apprehensive to shoot. He did play more physical though, I will say that. Definitely more physical in the offensive and neutral zones.

The wifey and I made the trip from Boston for the weekend and I got to play a little craps at Turning Stone too. NU has to do a better job promoting the away games and offer group bus trips for the students.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

I only said Roy had no shots on net because the box score stat sheet after the game last night had him listed at 0 shots on goal. Anyways somebody on the team needs to find the back of the net.

I have said it before and I will say it again, there is only one center on this team that can play with him, and they probably will not make that move unless the offense totally falls to pieces. The Hedges experiment lasted what, one game? So they went back to Stevens last night, because that worked so well last year.

Roy will get his at some point. I am not to worried about it. Just surprised about how crappy the rest of the forwards have been. Except for the Ontario kids. That was a given.

.

You must mean Pond. He hustles, doesn't shoot much and would probably look to give the puck to Roy even if he was in alone of the goalie:D Actually Stevens had a fair amount of success with Roy last year. I guess the coaches didn't want a line with two forwards who liked to watch the game in the defensive end.

I don't think it'd do much, honestly. There was one for the playoffs at UNH last year and maybe 5-10 people went. I'd imagine a 5 hour bus trip to upstate NY would draw even less.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Tonight will be a different story,NU should have been in last nights game, they matched up well and Vaughn's boys are no slouches, what happened last night was a case of largely not getting "lucky bounces", the effort was there for the most part,I hope Saucerman can make it back,I would rather see him on PK pointman than Cockerill,Roy and Hedges,Reid and the rest will get their breaks,as "Motorboaters" said they get an A for effort I agree and with the talent they have the goals will come,I will humbly hope for a 4-3 win tonight, let's get a look at Schecter on a regular basis to move the puck which he does well (one of NU's big problems) or even jump up on a wing,McMurtry would be nice to see also, would like to see Roy and Szmatula back as linemates, let's keep our chin up,this team has alot going for it,one of the weaknesses that stymies me is,does this team have the coaching to really do any damage in the big games. #hungryforhockey

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

And with that, my prediction is 6-3 Colgate. I was like 75% they would win with Witt tonight too.

Guys what makes you think we are going to score LOL 3 or 4 goals a game, in my best George Bush Sr voice, not gonna happen..this team is going to struggle to score 2 goals a night and based on 3 games may score 0 alot. These lines? I have seen better lines in the bathroom at Maxwell Jump's, Punters and Our House East during the 1980's. Good News, Goaile Roy played well, made some quility saves and stopped 2 or 3 that should have been in the net, could have been 5 nothing. However Roy needs to get untracked and to do that he needs to skate with Aston Reese to generate some O. However shut out in 8 of 9 periods, I think we will likly win next week v UMASS but I don't see this team near the top of this league right now not even close.
