Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

I hope you're not comparing Chris Bourque to JJB! You must be confused. No. Even you wouldn't do that!

Who was Retsap?

When they both knew there time was up, they both stopped going to classes. Though JJB at least did 3+ years worth to one semester from Chrissy.

..wait, you guys all talking to/at each other.. I thought you each had the other on 'ignore'.. ;)..
great that you're talking though.. program needs everyone! ..on & off ice.. :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

JJB is just a few courses shy of getting his degree and has plans to finish. Maybe then our Leader will allow him to join our Hall of Fame.

"Chrissy" was just a few courses shy of finishing his first semester. He stayed for the BP, scored the winning goals and left.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

...I'm hoping NU athletics can market the sport among students & the University/ neighborhood overall so we can 'up' once again.. the overall fan & player experience at Matthews. We have a decent team.. let's support 'em NU! Get a plan in place!

Actually, there are some talented people who actually give a rat's behind in sports marketing but none of them are in positions where they can influence policy and direction. I really don't see any broad-based marketing efforts unless and until we get someone like the late Dave O'Brien to head up Athletics.

..there's been plenty good ideas on these forums as well. All someone at the U. need do is try 20% of them..
And Madigan needs to speak up as well.. he has the marketing & fundraising prowness.. put it to work!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

I definitely wouldn't mind anything to get more people to show up. Getting outattended by Maine as a top 10 team in the country fighting for playoff position was really saddening. I kind of expected the fans to come with the success but it didn't happen.

There are those who believe that people who care enough about the program to post on boards like these are Enemies of the State and not to be acknowledged.

I don't have access to the true figures, but I know JM has put his moneyraising abilities to work on behalf of his program. He, Jerry and Pat have had to raise funds in order to do the kind of recruiting that has resulted in the type of recruits we saw in this years's freshman class. Additionally we have at least 4 top flight recruits for next fall and others committed for future classes. Unless you speak with one of the coaches, you can't imagine the amount of time and travel these fellows have done to find the right guys for the program. That costs $$ and the donations (as well as their recruiting budget) make it possible.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

..HH, that is great to hear.
Like I said.. I am more optimistic about nxt yrs team.. than I was.. this yrs squad & their decent season. Too bad we didn't sneak in to the tourney.. its great to go with decent goaltending (pls stay Clay! :)) Anyway.. more power to the Coaches!

I see the names, but it is hard to always find more about the recruits. Which one's for next year are the top guys. I think Cotton is one.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

So the last couple of days I have been thinking about the NCAA selection process. As the 4th and 5th place HE teams are out, and they 7th and 8th place teams are in without winning the conference tournament. Let alone that Vermont the 7th place team lost in the HE Qtrs, and 8th place Notre Dame was a lock to be in heading into the HE playoffs. What kind of system is this? Seems to me that Non-league play has move value to it than league play. If that is going to be the case, why have leagues? Or why give auto bids to leagues? Just take the top 16 PWR's. I mean the Atlantic gets an auto bid, I don't think they had a team with a PWR lower than 35, so every year they put a team in that takes away from the teams that should be there. Now this year that was Michigan, Denver took NU's spot. I'm not crying over NU not getting in, I seem to remember last year the same thing with Vermont, being in like 7th place and getting in. IN basketball they give auto bids to all D1 league champs but they take 68 teams, and if some 12-24 team wins it they make them play a play in game. Maybe its time for hockey to do the same, Have Michigan play Robert Morris Tuesday night, the winner plays Minnesota on Saturday. The upsets are part of the sport, I am not looking to get rid of those, just a tough pill to swallow when you are the 15th PWR team and Robert Morris #47 beat Canisius #45 to go. If last place Merrimack ran the table in the HE playoffs and got in, awesome for them. But when a entire conference is below the line, that kinda sucks.

Difference is there are so many basketball teams that only 19% make it to the 68 team tournament. Add two play-in games to the hockey tournament and now over 30% of the nation makes it.

If ten more programs join D1 hockey I would entertain the idea of play-in game(s). Until then 16 is a nice even number.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2013-14 Season Thread II: In Witt we Trust

so who centers Roy next season? Stevens did not work. When they went with Szmatula they got no scoring from any other line. We know Pond is out. That would leave Hedges, but the two never played together this season, and good chance they would be a disaster together on defense. Pretty sure no centers are coming in next year, its really all about the defense, and Nolan Stevens.

After you figure out center, who is his opposite wing?

If there is one thing we learned this year, unlike Szmatula, Roy needs someone to feed him the puck. Yes, he can carry the puck up himself and get scoring chances, but when he had a guy like Vinny S., he seemed to do better, and played like he enjoyed being out there.

Lets be honest here, he had a great season, but he did not exactly look like he was happy out there like he did his freshmen year. The NFL WR diva antics by the end of the year were as equally frustrating to watch for us as it was for him having to deal with being harassed out there. But its something you need to deal with if you are a star in this league. Not playing defense hard did not bother me as much as others on this board, but what did bother me was him taking his time to get off the ice during changes. (this was really a team wide thing by the end of the year, i dont think they were in tip-top shape, or playing defense the majority of the game wore them out) Skate back, get off the ice, dont dilly-dally and force the guy taking your place to have to skate back harder then he needs to get into the play.

I really felt he needed a bit of an attiude adjustment by the end of the year. At least from what i saw in the stands. He did have that one period suspension in the middle of the first half of the season, and from there on his play kinda tailed off, though the stats were there. Its not like he should have felt the pressure for carrying the load this year, there were a few other guys chipping in unlike last year.

Maybe it was a sophomore slump. Maybe he was playing hurt. Maybe he had off ice issues. Maybe the pressure for being the man got to him a bit. Something did not feel right with the kid this year. If he comes back, hopefully he can figure it out on the ice and play with the energy he had his freshmen year.

That is what I was thinking as well, I was only suggestion 1 play in game, 17 teams. I really think that he PWR needs to be visited.

17 teams making the hockey tournament is proportionally equal to 100 making the basketball tournament, I don't see the need for a play in game at this time.

PWR improvements last offseason fixed many issues IMO, I don't see anything major they should do at this time. There will always be a team that misses the tournament by one spot.

I'm not complaining about any 1 team missing the spot, I do think it is strange that the 7th and 8th place teams in HE were locks to get in and 4th, 5th and 6th are out. Just seems like NL play is more important.

UNH was 11-9-0 in HE good for 4th
ND was 9-9-2 in HE, only 2 points behind but all the way down in 8th.

ND went 14-5-0 OOC
UNH went 11-9-1

Overall ND had 1 more win and 4 fewer losses. Gotta look at the whole picture.

And 5 of those 11 wins for ND came against ALA Hunts and Lake Superior so....They do have some good wins as well. So I go back to, maybe league champions shouldn't get auto bid.

Both KRACH and RPI say ND had a tougher schedule than UNH. Remove the autobids and UNH is still out and ND is still in.
