Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

They are not the only coaching staff to make that decision though. Cronin did the same thing. Plus Witt was hurt all of last year. And in everyone's defense, Witt was not ready yet based on how he played when he was in there the previous two seasons. Lets all remember, there was ZERO evidence that we had this type of goaltender on the bench.

I am actually giving JM a pass on not playing Witt before.

As for skating, Sauce can skate, but is clueless on how to play the position. Just because you can skate, does not mean you should be in there.

Based on how he played? He barely got any starts before this year. Fact remains he was our best defenseman against the best team in the nation and hasn't had a chance since. Now, maybe he just had a great weekend and he's not ready to be a starter but with how this team is defensively anything could be a spark. You never know.

He got into 15 games his first two years, and outside of one game against bu, the last game of the season before we beat them in the playoffs, he sucked.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

...Regarding Roy, I have a guy feeling he'll stay one more year...nothing to base it off of, but I just feel like he is enjoying college, and now that the team has begun winning, I would think he'd like to continue with it. Again, no evidence to support the claim, but I think (and hope!) he will stay

KRoy is going to do what Anaheim wants him to do. Same with the other drafted players. A much, much bigger question is whether of not CW decides to 1) return to lead a more experienced team with an arguably stronger defense and, in the process, make a serious run at the Hobey, or 2) listen to promises of $$$$ being cooed into his ears and cash in through free agency.

But let's hold that for the off-season thread. Plenty of more pressing issues to deal with in the here and now.

I'm in this boat as well. The D could really use anything at this point, and especially if Manson/Benning are out for an extended period of time. Schechter could be a spark they need. I'd rather try him out then put a F back on the blue line.

Ahh, "got into"...because you can really tell how good a goaltender is by them coming in cold during a blowout...

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Coaching, coaching, coaching.

giving up 2 more shorties last night on the power play.. so.. i'd say.. yeah. kids need some direction on this stat. it is a glaringly bad stat for us all season. there is something they are not addressing in practices on puck movement.. getting it down ice.. getting it to the corners.. something! Coaching?.. dunno.. something!

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I'm completely sold on NU recruit Matt Filipe as are many others, but here's more good press on the Malden Catholic forward following his team's 11-0 dismantling of Catholic Memorial. Filipe had a hat trick in the first period.

Saw him versus BC High he is a hell of a player and doesn't have the ego Ara Nazarian has.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Just like why they kept Witt behind Rawlings, right? For three years...

Schecter can actually skate, this was evidenced vs. BC when he was by far the best defenseman out there.
Witt would have played last year wiithout injuries. Keeping him off the ice sealed up another healthy year of eligibility while using redshirt for last year.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Northeastern actually reminds me of the 2013 Patriots.

They have some good players, a backbone to lean on. However, they have had some injury problems and are playing well above what they were projected to do. They beat some really good teams but have had some stinkers and squeaker wins. They might get past the first round and tease us, but in the end they will probably be who we thought they were at the beginning of the season.

No I'm glad they redshirted him last season that wasn't my point, the point is sometimes, coaches aren't perfect. I'm fairly certain if we take the 2010-2011 team and Witt is named starter from the offseason, they'd have finished better than they did. 2011-2012 also. It's completely different coming off the bench randomly in the middle of blowouts which is why Huskies01's assessment of that situation is inaccurate.

Maybe they should worry more about defensemen who can keep possession and keep the puck in the zone on the PP? Also, I HATE umbrellas PPs. Our powerplay sucks because there is barely any movement. We let teams set up shop for defensive purposes and then hope to get a snipe.

He started 6 of those 15 games. He looked bad in all but one of them. Again, its not like they knew they had a kid like this sitting on the pine and elected not to play him. TWO different coaching staffs.

I heard from a buddy whos reliable they wanted Witt to play last year. I didn't originally believe him, as I didn't know he was as good as he is. Story lined up well with his play this year.

What?

The three games he started in 2010-2011 were against Bentley, BU and UML.

Save percentages of 0.941, 0.958 and 0.932 respectively.

So there goes the, he sucked in all but 1 game rhetoric you've been falsely stating.

and what did he do the next year?

Again, I am all for dissing JM, but not on this point.

I have heard the same stories goign back to his first year where Cronin wanted to play him and did not, and last year they were going to play him but he was injured. Which becomes really? If you thought he was this good, why even bother recruiting Gillies? So he could backup Witt for two years? Give me a break.

Great job by Witt in stepping up and being unbelievable this year. But nobody saw it coming, no matter what people are saying after the fact.

My original point was never to badmouth Madigan. Never said that, my point was just because you are on the bench doesn't mean you can't contribute to a team. You essentially said Schecter is on the bench because he can't play well and I believe that's not the case as he already proved vs. BC.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

There's no point in discussing anything with Huskies01. He is intent to be negative. In 2011 the goalie coach told Cronin that Witt is better and that he should play. If you remember Cronin in his post game presser after game 3 against BU he said that he went against the recommendation of his goalie coach. I think they staff new they had a good goalie in Witt, now this good. Nobody thought this good. But I hate how you say take away the goalie and they team is not a good. You could say that about every team with a good goalie. He is part of the team, add Rawlings and this team is right where it was last year. Take Thiesen off the 09 team and they are a 15 win team. Witt is on the team so stop saying remove him. If you look at the goalie rankings for Witt's incoming year he was a highly regarding recruit. Remember everyone thought Rawlings was a 1 and done.

So why do you think Madigan has sat him since? He prefers playing 5 dmen and keeping Fennell on strapped to the bench for emergency use only? Who knows maybe we get both Schechter AND Gus Harms in the lineup.

I am actually willing to give the coaching staff some credit here and think that if they rather go with 5 dmen in a Beanpot Final then play a kid, there probably is a problem there.

As for being ranked highly, I wanna live in your world retsap where being ranked #17 on a list is "highly ranked."

Anyway, enough, until somebody says what is going on with both Manson and Benning its a mute point. The big question is, how many goals get scored at Matthews in total this weekend? The two best goalies in the league going to go head to head.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Today, the Huskies are 9th in the Pairwise. That is the only list that counts for the NCAA post season. I think that's 'highly ranked'.
