Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Given how badly the team played Friday night, what are the odds that he plays the same exact lineup Monday night? I say that he will because he has shown that he believes in redemption - if a lineup plays terribly, he gives them a chance to redeem themselves. A bit bizarre. Most coaches would shake things up and sit some players.

Been thinking about this as I watched the "Huskies Unleashed" video that got put out. Anyone think there will be lineup changes, even minor ones? Fennell out, line changes (Cody moving up?)? Or is the general consensus we'll see what we saw versus Harvard?

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

As a student, it is very disheartening each week to see the turnouts be what they are. The last couple years, when the team played terribly, we were still able to pack the Doghouse, and yet this year when we actually play well, we hardly sniff capacity. I don't get it. Part of it may be related to the stream, but I believe a large part of it is that NU does not advertise the notion of what a student section can and should be. I've had friends bail on games because they feel they don't impact the game, the games are boring, them going won't change the outcome- NU does not do a good job, imo, of promoting what the gameday experience should be. Yes, Boston offers a variety of options for you to spend your Friday and Saturday nights on, but NU should be able to market a top 12 team in the nation to compete with them. The Beanpot gets a large student turnout because of the experience of it. Regular games at Matthews need to have that same appeal. The team deserves the institution's and the study body's full support this year with how far they've come, and yet it feels in their eyes we are still mired in last place.

Split N is right, basketball is even worse when it comes to attendance. And yet I have seen more advertising for basketball than hockey this year around campus. A couple guys who are part of the Doghouse "leadership" this year also run the N-Zone, and some basketball games feel quieter than the library. Maybe it's an off year for rowdy leadership..a couple individuals are very passionate and let it be known, but on the whole the most of the upperclassmen are too, too quiet.

When I was an undergrad (just a few years ago) the doghouse was always packed. I think it had a lot to do with the doghouse leadership. It seemed to me then like there was hardly a time when some manner of cheer wasn't happening. One of the things that also made it great was as the crowd grew, the opposite side of the rink would start cheers as well with the reverse dog house and others. There was always some amount of attempts to create new creative cheers as well, although colorful and not exactly classy. The 'come from behind', 'teamwork', and 'penatrate and score' chants weren't cheers when I started, but now you hear them any time its that type of condition in the game. Believe me there were several that failed as well. Now I haven't been to Matthews for many games but one thing I do think is great is that the fans and the band seem to be cooperating more. It was quite something to hear the songs continue in singing version after the band finished playing.

On a more current note though can't wait to see what happens tonight! Go Huskies!

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Forget it's the Beanpot.. NU.. we know how that goes..
tonight, its just a chance to once again upset #1 team in the country.

Have fun with it!.. lv the pressure to the #1 seed. :) Go you Huskies!

Wait... if you have as much as an inkling of a thought that NU has a chance of winning this game, NU cannot be considered an underdog, and therefore, it would not be an upset.

It's true... I read it on the internet (on the BU thread actually). ;)

The team AND the fan base is really falling apart over there. :D

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Keys to the game: Witt being able to stop 10 odd man rushes and 5 breakaways. And that's just when the Huskies are on the power play. Seriously, he is the key to the game. If he stands on his head and the D clears away rebounds, we can win.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Benning was AWFUL. Worst game he's played so far. We didn't lose anything in the Pairwise so not a big deal NCAA wise. But I consider this weekend's game at UMASS as must-win to keep hope of a first round bye in HEA.

For sure. The team that showed up today needs to be the one that shows up every game from here on out. The boys played their hearts out, it was a fantastic game to watch. The energy from the NU faithful was simply electric. Just wish the results was different. We hung with the number 1 team in the nation for 55 minutes, and had our chances to take the lead. Need to convert, simple as that. No penalties is astounding and a big step forward. Lots of important games left this year. This is the stepping stone for the stretch run. Go NU.

We took penalties, the refs decided rules didn't matter tonight. The game was better for it but nevertheless...

I mean I suppose when you are used to losing in a close game every beanpot championship you are at least used to it. Maybe as time goes on it eventually won't even hurt anymore?

62 Beanpots we have won 4.

At this point the Beanpot obsession really needs to end, I'll take 5 NCAA tournament appearances over 10 Beanpots. This team needs to figure out a way to not give up 40 shots a game and needs to do it fast before the rest of the season goes down the tubes.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

there were a few close calls both ways.. no question that weren't called.
on the gm.. offense missed some opportunities to get the puck on net.. just taking shots on net.. much like roy did that generated the rebound goal. to their credit, bc was good with their shot blocking (much like umass was this past wknd). seems like we waited for that perfect pass or back door opportunity.. that seldom came.. it did come nicely once with the extra attacker with gm at 2-1, but Roy was bit off his timing at the back door. the benning giveaway for the eng was bad, hopefully he'll learn from it. might help us again further down the line.

witt was outstanding!!!.. you could tell he didn't want to lv that ice at 2-1.. he is great to have & a pleasure to watch. will be huge come ncaa time.. (fingers crossed)!

Can't for the life of me understand why 79-22-16 line did not get more ice time tonight. This line was making things happen every time they were out there. Cannot run same 6 guys constantly and not expect them to run out of gas. Out coached in my opinion.

I won't get all rah-rah about how the tournament is an important Boston tradition. On the other hand, I would feel much better about your NCAA tourny stance if we actually went there regularly.

Our defense core just really isn't that good. It was great from a fan's perspective watching the level of talent BC has defensively. They did a great job keeping NU's shots to the outside for the most part. When BC had to put the foot on the pedal and take a lead you could see it all beginning to slip away. They are one or two critical players away from winning the game tonight. Huskies needed to get lucky in order to win that one, and when you saw the final of the UMass game and in addition to the first goal being disallowed I began to question whether or not it was their year.

This tournament isn't changing anytime soon. BU has fallen off, Harvard is falling into the cellar/might have a brand new coaching staff, BC continues to dominate/always has amazing young talent, and NU always seems to be stuck in the same gear. It is a real shame. I'm tired of seeing no one at the 5pm game, and basically Harvard or NU losing every single, painful time since 88/93.

Madigan has absolutely taken a step forward this year. The last time I thought NU was becoming a serious contender Cronin was fired and it was back to starting from scratch. Roy has been fantastic, an absolute gem. Szmatula has been a wonderful player too. I think the offense is pretty much a two man show between them both. Imagine this team without Szmatula? We barely kept him, he wanted out before he even reached Huntington Ave. I guess my point is I would love to see some year to year consistency. That has been lacking for a very long time.

I may seem overly pessimistic. But man these last few games are huge and they need to win them. I have seen a lot of the HE teams play. I wonder if NU is this good or it is the product of a weak HE this year. I see BC as the only legitimate national contender in the entire conference. Just a few years ago this NU team would have had to contend with BU, Maine, UNH, BC... This year to me it's just BC. NU is 3-5-1 versus the top 6 teams in HE currently.

Benning had no business on at the end. Don't care if he is one of your best offensive defenseman he was a turnover machine all night and was so nervous with the puck and he handed BC the winner. It was a tough game for him but we did get outcoached.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

we're like the earlier version of the red sox/ white sox when it comes to this tournament. it's gonna happen.. just not now.

You must have been watching a different game. 79 looks lost out there, thankfully his time is done here. He will go down as a big disappointment.
