Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

This will be interesting to see how the teams handle the unusual start time.

On a side note, where is NU SpeedRacer? He only came to this forum to ***** about team and coach's. Not much *****ing happening this year.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

He was high on last years class too, and outside of Roy it stunk. May Saucerman and Gunn can contribute going forward, but man, the Ontario dmen were lost causes, and I cannot remember any of the other forwards outside of the one kid who Madigan described as a power forward who managed 0 penalties on the year. High impact power forward that kid was.

When is a coach not high on his guys? ZAR maybe ready, but for what? He sure did not light the lamp his 3 years prior to coming here, do we really need more defensive forwards? Szmats I am sure will be fun and one and done, based on him already being 21. So not really a building block, not to mention, how hard is he going to try when the season is in the dumpster, its not like he WANTS TO BE HERE! Hedges, all 5'7 of him (maybe) coming out of a league that gave us DD and Farrell on the back. So yeah, he lit it up, but if those guys are considered top dmen in that league, whats he going to do when faced with real competition? You got the one kid on the blue line the Bruins took in the middle rounds, and then a bunch of JAGS. (just another guy). Maybe baby Cody turns into something down the line, and Stevens to me is interesting in a possibly Chris Lynch (for you mid to late 90s guys) kinda way.

Like AC/DC said, its a long way to the top if you want to Rock'N Roll. I dont think JM can even get the band together, let alone put together a hit record. Going to be lots of pick your own sections night at the old barn this season.

A lot of season left so nothing to brag about yet, but this post is a reminder of where we were just a few months ago. Let's finish what we have started here. 14 games to go (I think), we are in the most critical stretch of the season, huge HEA games, Beanpot...let's make some noise.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

with the questionable ice conditions tomorrow.. here's hoping for no injuries (either team) & a fun gm for all involved.
Go Huskies! :)

Not for nothing, but NU SpeedRacer has been a passionate fan and supporter of NU Hockey for many years. His criticism of the team and its coaches comes out of frustration, that we all have, due to the historical mismanagement of the Hockey Operations and the status quo "yes men" surrounding the program. It is unfortunate that you feel that you have to call him out because he is choosing not to comment on the current success of the team. I think we are all excited and pleasantly surprised with the team this year. Hoping we can keep it going.....

I agree, well said.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Its always a great time to be an NU fan, esp.now, the victories are that much sweeter having gone through the "dark night of the soul" those were difficult times, and you never takes victories for granted, there are many reasons NU and its fans are the best!

The PC game was also great for a different reason, if we look back a couple years, and if you were like me devastated when Jon Gillies decommitted from NU, many of us just hit hard by that loss esp.as we had Rawlings as our top goalie, that was a nightmare not knowing which Rawlings would show up in any given game/period, so at the time we have a benchwarmer named Clay Witt, fast forward that to 2013-14 Rawlings is finally gone and we have the ex-benchwarmer Clay Witt playing spectacular, so much so Clay Humiliates the NU hope Gillies whose team was #6 in the country!! I am so excited for the present and hopeful for the future, the sting of the loss of Gillies is gone, enter Clay Witt and his Huskies #isthistheyear

i'm not sure if this is the year for anything (trophy wise).. but it is nice to see them achieve more that what everyone had expected & hopefully team continues to build off of that. remember, we just lost to AF in a Holiday tourney.. which is a reminder this is a young team which will have its lapses, time to time. we get outshot a lot.. but with decent goaltending some of that gets masked.

just enjoy the ride far as it goes.. all I wish for is that they hang in with the good teams.. capitalize on chances, play unselfish & take it gm at a time.
Go Huskies :)

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

you guys might as well win this game. Go Huskies! NU just hit the post, half way through 1st , no score

Thanks for reminding about that. I was not far off from where we are today. The forwards have played better then I expected, but the defense is keeping this team from being a real Top 10 force.

The unexpected play of Clay Witt has really been the best surprise this season. It was one thing for him to come in and play well, that could be seen. To be one of the top 10 goalies in the country, perhaps top 5? Well that was not in anybody's dreams, from the coaches on down.

Anyway, it will be interesting from here on out. We go as far as Clay Witt takes us. He stumbles or becomes average, we may not win another game as we saw in the Dartmouth tournament. He continues at this level, Frozen 4 bound!

You said the freshmen class would suck (they don't), you implied we'd be horrible (we aren't) and you mentioned nothing of your expectations from Witt. You then implied Szmatula would half *** it and he's been one of the best freshmen in the nation.. And yet you think you weren't far off? It's okay to admit you were wrong, really it is. A lot of people, including the HEA coaches expected us to be miserable. Irrelevant of Witt, it's nice to have a team that can actually score in bunches.

The freshmen class has been a nice surprise, though there is enough of them out there nightly that its hard not for them to pick up points. (though ZAR and Hedges have slowed down a bit point wise over the last month or so, Pond is a fringe player at this point he cant even win faceoffs anymore) I figured Szmatula would quit once the team was out of it. They are not so he is still giving effort, not to mention he probably has $$$ in his eyes as he continues to accumulate points.

The defense has been horrid. The goalie has played well beyond expectations and keeps the team in games.

Do you think this team is that much different from last years? Have you watched? Main difference, has been the goaltender. The defense might as well be orange cones out there. These guys give up 20 shots a period like its going out of style. Did again this afternoon in the first period. And as much as everyone wants to say that all the shots are from the outside, they are not. In that 20, there are normally 5 Grade A chances.

Again, this team goes as far as Clay Witt takes them.

As for today, end of 2 up 3-1. So another dreaded two goal lead going into the third period. Hold on and you are in 2nd place in Hockey East, three points up on UNH for fourth. Its been a ton of fun so far, but if the bottom drops out, I would not be so surprised either.

I think everyone agrees and knows we go as far as Witt takes us. But this team is very different from last year. They can actually score. That's important in hockey and a big part of being 12-6-3. Defensively, they have a lot of work to do, but not as bad as the train wreck last season.

I'm not saying I'm psychic (though I did say this year's freshman class would be much better than last year's), but let's be real, you were a bit off in your expectations. And I was also. And so was pretty much everyone. And that's a good thing. Cheers.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Huskies01.. let's just enjoy the season & team play while it lasts.

4-1 NU in 'Rainy Fenway' in not the most ideal conditions for either team.

Nice effort team! :)

fyi.. for anyone curious.. NESN will be relaying this gm tonight 5:30p I am told.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

If NHL awards correlated to NCAA hockey, Witt would be the Hart Trophy winner for Hockey East. No doubt about it. Gaudreau would take the Lindsay.

Who would've thought at this point we'd have wins over PC, ND and Lowell x2, all on the road/neutral. Great goaltending + an explosive offense is a great formula.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

In the two games this week, Witt stopped 85 out of 87 shots. That is amazing. That he could stop that many, and that we give up that many!

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

just glad we got our gm in without injury. would have much preferred both gms be postponed. better for fans & players alike.

absolutely atrocious for kids playing right now.
these players work hard all their life.. subjecting them to irresponsible decision making like this.. (that's you FSM)..
please play russian roulette elsewhere nxt time!
