Northeastern Drops Football

Re: Northeastern Drops Football

Doesn't NU still have turf soccer field more or less on campus that they share with Wentworth? Last I remember, the women played there, and it would also be suitable for practice and intramurals.

Re: Northeastern Drops Football

Denver dropped big time football in 1960, even with what was a 30,000 seat on campus stadium (the stadium was torn down in the 70s). Frankly, putting the football money into hockey has been the best thing to happen to campus sports here. DU has won 7 NCAA hockey titles since that general period and hockey has become the flagship sport, and I am sure that had they kept football, the school would probably be an also ran in the MWC, Sun Belt or Big Sky or some other pudunk conference no one cares about now, and the hockey team would probably not be a big deal either.

Some people might miss the tailgating or football homecoming, but I'd rather my school give me teams that are revelant at a high level in their sports.

More schools should just play sports that they can fund to compete at the highest level. High level football today is an arms race that is tilted toward warm weather schools that can recruit in places like Florida and Texas. For a cold-weather urban school like NU, hockey and basketball are much better bets.

i lived in housing overlooking that field last year and only our Women's Field Hockey plays there (and maybe some intramural stuff, I'm not sure about that). Every thing else still plays out at parsons
