Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

First of all Belonger left a partial scholarship after he learned that he would have less icetime than he had the year before. He went to a place where he was pretty sure he would play regularly. He may have gotten some financial help. I don't know. But, I hope he feels better about life and about hockey and gets his degree.

Belonger does feel better about life and hockey. Much better.

Szmatula may have been a stud from the neck down, but he was a selfish teammate who was known to have lobbied at least one official scorer in order to get additional assists credited to him. He chafed at having to play behind Kevin Roy. He felt that he should have had even more PP minutes than he was getting. He was a serial decomitter, but yes, he was a stud on the ice who played the game for his personal gratification and aggrandizement. He should have turned pro when his junior eligibility ended. Perhaps we'll see him next year.

Thank you for the psychiatrist's report. Based on what I saw on the ice, he was the least selfish player out there and made all of his linemates better.

Outside of the exhibition game, when did you see "flashes of brilliance" from Mr. Cotton. I was hoping he could continue his productivity from his time in Kelowna. While I did see some positive moves, I also saw a number of turnovers and lost battles against the boards. With so few goals being scored , compared with past decades, a player's game has to be measured by what he does without the puck, how he backchecks or plays defense. Apparently he had yet to measure up. Do you really think he was better than Gaudette or Williams?

Every time Cotton loaded up to take a shot, it was exciting. Even if he missed the net, it was like the puck was shot out of a cannon. He had the best release on the team. Yes, I think he was better than Gaudette. I don't know if he was better than Williams, as I've never seen him play defense. I also don't know if he was better than Ruck, as I've never seen him play goalie.

Try to keep in mind that most of these kids come to college hoping to get an education, even a degree, before they realize their ultimate dream of turning professional. Coaches and parents have often pampered them and allowed them harbor the notion that they have something coming to them. When they encounter a coach who demands more than they have or want to give, they often react by looking for what they believe will be greener pastures. It happens at every school in virtually every sport. The flip side is that we have four transfers who chose to come here. The basketball team benefitted from a center who transferred in. The soccer, baseball and track teams get and lose transfers every year. In each case the athlete feels that he will benefit in some way from the move.

Thanks for the life lesson. Yes, we get lots of transfers who want to play hockey in the Boston area because none of the other teams in the area want them - especially the teams that have already cut them.

Blame the coaching if you wish, but you will be missing dozens of other reasons that motivate these movements.

That is my wish.

Former Maine forward Liam Pecararo commits to Northeastern for next year.

Cotton got Jacked by a broken coach in a broken system. 5-12-4. You play (A LOT) if your dad is an NHL coach or you are a Dman that is -11. Scratch that..... how do you play if you are a Dman that is -11. :)

How? Just ask the Bentley coach, preferential treatment if you are a double digit negative at the Jar. Both coaches must have missed the coaching class "defensive skills 101". Bad for players and bad for programs.

I'll try this again. How does anyone know that we will be playing at Arizona State next year? If we are, do we know if it will be regular season nc game or holiday tourney? Thanks.

Jimmy mentioned some of the future schedule commitments during the NUFOH annual meeting last June. IIRC we go out there for a pair of OOC games.

Yeah, go figure. Their only pro prospect has been in the stands most of the season. And the coaches wonder why they are continually at or near .500. anyway, soory NU, not a topic for you're thread.

Don't expect him or Hedges tonight. 1-2 weeks away. Hopefully by the Beanpot.

I hope so, however once again they are playing good hockey late and pretty much dominated UNH at the barn tonight. Nice job Huskies! One more win and you can get out of the cellar. Aside form that we get a few guys back and a beanpot is certainly possible. Too bad we fall into the late start issue year in and year out because truth be told this team is far better than it's record and really looks like a top HE team right now. If they win on the road V, the Wildcats tomorrow a place where we have less than a .300 winning %, if we win that than I will say we have a shot to totally rebound from the horrendous start. However you have to admint over the last 6 or so they look ok!

First win against a conference opponent in the last 18 tries. Over 11 months between wins. Gonna have to string together at least 7 wins in the remaining 10 and have some luck go our way to have a chance at a first round game at Matthews, but it's a start.

All I can say is WOW!! Couple of weeks ago you said you didn't think they were capable of winning 1-2 more games, now they have a shot at the beanpot. Which way is the wind blowing?

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

Did you fall down and hit your head?

No, Hockey is a game of ebbs and flows, i watch how the other teams are playing in contract to us. Aside form BC and Providence and perhaps Lowell. I think we are playing as well or better then anyone, a QU tie, a BC tie and a 1 point loss, and 2 road wins v St L, is not a fluke. My thought is they are gelling at the right time, granted its likely too late for much, but a win at UNH tonight a place where if you look they historically have perhaps their worst away record will tell us a great deal. However looking at the schedule they still have a shot if they take them one game at a time. Here is what I am hearing they believe they can win any game and that’s the 1st step in winning.

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

Its hard to deny that they are playing bad hockey right now, because they are not. Are they good enough to beat in anyone in the Top 5 of Hockey East? No. Are they now at the level of the teams around them in the standings, if not better? Yes.

Lets be honest, the schedule outside of UML the rest of the way is really weak. Maine is horrible. UConn is a joke. Umass cant keep the puck out of the net. If NU continues to play like they did last night, they should do quite well the rest of the way.

But we KNEW that going into the season. That if they could pull points in the first half, they could set themselves up to have a really awesome 2nd half and possibly even stay in striking distance of a Top 4 seed. But they failed that test. Big time. This is the same team that got swept by Bentley, WITH their best player on the ice.

Now with all the pressure being off of them, they are playing well. All lines are scoring, the goalie is finally playing with some confidence, the defense is still swiss cheese, but that was never going to get fixed this season, and with everyone collapsing below the circles on defense, as long as they do not get into an up and down skating type of contest, they can survive.

But still, to me, until proven otherwise, they are a bunch of puck-teases. I will root for them like heck, do not get me wrong, but until they do something special, its same old same with these guys.

Re: Northeastern 2015-16: Hobey Roy Kenobi and the Freshman Force

Ditto with everything that's been said about the turnaround. But for a marginal penalty in the last minute vs UML in Belfast and a softie goal by QPac, that UML OT loss and QPAC tie could well be W's. Encouraged by the secondary scoring. Ruck looks to be settling in but his habit of letting in one softie per game is unsettling.
