Terrific article about someone who has gained some maturity and has developed into a winner as a person, and a leader as well as a hockey player. For many of us, this gives us a great deal of satisfaction that cannot be measured solely by wins and losses or goals and assists on the ice.:D

..well said. Life gave him a second chance, nice to see he's made something of it far as education & sport he enjoys playing. With his upcoming graduation this Summer, it'll be nice to see him having landed firmly on his feet. If (when) he suits up for Winnipeg.. it'll have all been worth it.. ups, downs, all..

The streaming video from down at Schnieder is atrocious,Just spent 10 dollars on this,on the other hand it again makes me so thankful for the website at NU and it's free!,whoever's idea that was should get a promotion (unless it's Roby)

More injuries also,yikes,this team has had such poor fortune in that dept.

Bright spots Ryan Belonger and Josh Manson's goals

Looks like this game is in the tank,tomorrow is another day,and another game at home-Go Huskies!!

Spoke with another outsider of NU hockey today who thinks that all of the people against Madigan are nuts! Person is heavily involved in another D1 hockey program.

Stop blaming the coach, it such a cop out. Come to terms with it, the team sucks. Look at at the Junor and Senior class. Saponari and ferreiro, thats it. Pimm is a decent player. Thats all you have for upper classman. Playing 4-6 underclassman on D.

Wake up guys! Please stop *****ing about the coach, you sound like a bunch *******s. The team is no good.

OMG, Next years class is not much better Steve, trust me, and another missed year or two of HE playoffs will cost JM his job, Roy is gone after this year or next, as please he has no reason to stay, why? he can play in the NHL now! I guarantee it ! ND, BU, UML MC, NH and PC will be much better than us with no tested goalie between the pipes and again the HE playoffs will be a stretch, plus the following year CT who has raised some 3 million for hockey form boosters off the lucrative Big E success of the lady and men's BB teams will also be ahead of us at the get go. They are going to be the next great team in this league and will batle BU and BC before us, just like they did in 1986 when they hired NU BB caoch Calhoun and kicked the **** out of BC in BB for the next a 1/4 century. Mark my words! If Madigan makes year 4 I will donate both my BU and NU season tix to New England home for Little Wanderers. He is not the guy to win a HE championship and take the program to the NCAA tournament year in and year out. I am sorry, but Greg Cronin is the best pure coach this program has ever had and I played for Fernie!

Steve.. for every opinion you get like the one you mentioned, you'll also get the opposite from people in the hockey world. Anyone who 'cares' about the school has a right to question why we have a guy leading the bench without a single day behind the bench (prior to this stint).. in the last 18-20 yrs. Game & tactics have changed..the 'coaching' has passed him by.

It is a serious & legitimate concern. And yes.. I am more than convinced LaPlante would have gotten more out of THIS team.. including shot at playoffs, his first 2 seasons behind that bench. JM is a recruiter & a good one, fine.. then (as has been mentioned a 1000 times..), we also need a Coach for gm situations!!! Keep Madigan in the hockey operations..since he loves the program - just get us a qualified HC sooner rather than later.

We have an alum who was / IS qualified.. Peter Roby sought to build his bridges within the U.. and we have the current hire.

One more season.. fine, willing to ride out one more Mad Dog season.. that's it & this season ticket holder (and donor), will not patronize in person at least.. the hockey, until there is meaningful change!

What program? Comments like this hold no value whatsoever. Further, if the person is heavily involved in another program why would he know anything of value for our program.

How does one fix a bad team in college hockey?
Who is at fault for building a bad team in college hockey?


If you want to go ahead and blame the players, go ahead, but don't expect anyone to listen.

College Hockey is not a sport where schools just look at their student body, go into the student center and randomly ask people if they know how to play hockey. There are no walk ons (or at least there shouldn't).

Someone is responsible for these players choosing NU as their college. They are the one who is responsible for the team's skill level. They are the ones who get blamed when it fails.


So please Steve, tell me who is responsible? Who is to blame for the skill level?


Is it the current coach who isn't recruiting good enough players? Madigan
Is it the old coach who didn't recruit good enough upperclassmen? Cronin
Is it the loss of players/recruits when the old coach leaves for the NHL? Roby (and Cronin)
Is it the lack of ability to close on recruits due to various reasons that probably could have been avoided? Madigan (and Roby)
Is it the fact that our coach had only a season or two of coaching experience(asst coach) prior to being hired? Roby
Is it the fact that our coach has spent the last 20 years as a fundraiser for the BUSINESS school? Roby
Is it the fact that a top rated, award winning, extremely experienced, HOCKEY EAST former head coach is available and waiting? Roby


The answer is simple. The fault is on Madigan and ultimately Roby.

OK who else is good? Tell me again where the talent is? Rawlings, is a Cronin guy.

Madigan has 1 class in, it included 1 of the best players in college hockey Roy. He is probably going to leave, but is that the fault of the current coaching staff that there is no upperclassman that do anything. You have 2 players that produce out of the junior and senior class. I don't care how good your freshman is, freshman can't lead.

I am also curious as to how LaPlante would have prevented the 3rd period collapses? For a guy that also has no college head coaching experience you guys certainly think he is the Jerry York.

Deal with it, the team sucks. If you fire the coach, then you can count on that the top recruits out of next years class will take off and it will be another bare class coming in and will set the program back another year. Give him a chance! Also Madigan being fired would make 100% certain that Roy would leave.

you are all missing the crux of the problem.
madigan inherited a program on the rise. cronin's last 2 years produced 2 year misses in bpot. 2 he final fours, 1 point from a regular season championship and several all rookies. the freshmen on his last team: oleksiak (nhl), reid (ahl), bitetto (ahl), eibler?, dongara (umass)...are all gone because the team was mismanaged by the hc. the next round of recruits included: saponari, reid, gaudreau, haar, kovacs, gillies, darcy etc....figure it out steve. they had the best talent in decaded coming to nu because cronin and staff resourced the program those first 3 years. cronin by the way, inherited an awful team and an awful program. he built it up against tough odds....and his staff enhanced the image...hence the good recruiting.
madigan and staff tore apart something that was on an upward swing...maybe there is some method to this madness, but i dont see any light at the end of the tunnel. and rossi is right, with uconn and nd entering the league, nu will get pushed further down the food chain. roby's gender equity ego pushed cronin and co out....and madigan couldnt keep it together because he never coached before, nor managed an athletic staff. why the hell did oconnell and laplante leave when they were big parts of cronin's program that was winning? hello

Hello back at you! Let me answer the last part of your rant since it is clear that you really don't have a clue. Madigan was an assistant coach at UVM and NU for several years under Ben Smith. We had several very good teams during that time period partly becasue of some outstanding recruits that JM found including Dan McGillis, Jordan Shields Aube, Dal Lupo and others. In addition to several positions at NU he was a part time scout for the Islanders and more recently for the Penguins when they won the Stanley Cup. He is certainly not a neophyte.

O'Connell was the chief recruiter and was responsible for bringing in most of the talent that we would have had on this years team, if Roby hadn't turned his innocuous texting to committed recruits into a cause celebre. He saw the writing on the wall and accepted a similar postion at Harvard. He had a wife and, IIRC three kids to support and needed a job.

Sebastien wanted and, in the opinion of many, deserved the HC job. When Jimmy won Roby's heart(?), the first thing he he wanted to do was to make Sebastien the #1 assistant, or possibly the Associate HC. Sebastien initially planned to stay, but was advised by someone that if he wanted a D1 Head Coaching job, he should get some NHL or AHL experience. So when he was offered an Assistant job with Minnesota's AHL team in Houston, he moved his family and has thrived there. This was strictly a career move. The last thing he wanted to do was to leave the NU campus and hockey program. He was well liked by those he worked with, and importantly, he was liked and respected by the players who played for him. At least one player who left would still be here if Sebastien had stayed.

Rye cheers... U miss the point. Maybe I dont have a clue about oconnell & laplante's personal situations, but I do have a clue about a program that looked better than UML & PC 2 years ago when Cronin & staff left. My point is not that Madigan banished the 2 assistants, but that they were important links to the continuity of the recruiting that was generating top notch players to NU....from the outside looking in, it doesn't look good. In fact it looks awful. If u separate ur feelings from the coach(s), u would be clueless to suggest that the "program" is not suffering. Madigan has a great reputation and is well liked....but he was a "part time" amateur scout for the last 15 years. He needed help. The easiest way for him to succeed would have been to capitalize on the momentum of the last staff. I am not blaming Madigan for their absence...it is a shame they left....but if u look at all the players and recruits that have left in the last 2 years, it looks "torn apart". I want NU to be good. I am rooting for Madigan and have said it is a larger issue than one coach. It is an I an athletics department failure. And as Rossi suggested...it ain't gonna get any easier w ND & UConn.
