Of course it's arbitrary. Arbitrary seems good to me. Lowest remaining seed against highest remaining seed is boring. When it comes down to the final tournament, I see no value in giving the #1 overall seed the easiest possible road to the national championship, as constantly reseeding would do.

Why not run the entire playoff that way then? Maybe because they earned that deed with every game they played in the past 5 months?

Fair enough. I just think it would be boring. And I don't think any NCAA single elimination tournament runs that way. I think all brackets are set before the tournament begins. I could be wrong, of course.
