This is a no win situation for the Gophs in terms of SOS. If they stay true to ex-WCHA rivals to make up the non-con schedule, they do so at the risk of losing a series against a potentially higher ranked team. That's not to say that UMd and SCSU aren't quality teams most years, but rarely has MSU-M and BSU been of that caliber to advance SOS and NCAA pairwise rankings. Plus, with a team that carries part of the non-rev load for the school, they can't give up home games. It's not arrogance (well at least not totally) but more a case of economics.

I believe that telling the reigning NCAA Champion that you will be "considered" as an opponent to have a 2:1 home series is very arrogant. I wish I knew a little more about the circumstances leading to the NSCC and the pay outs involved. SCSU and UMD telling the UofM to shove it may probably had an impact.

Why? Also, the U of M doesn't offer a whole lot of non-needs based scholarships. I don't remember anyone in my graduating ChEn class who got a scholarship from the U. Some did, but those were earned later in their four years.

Personal reasons. I hate the UofM campus. I love the city of Duluth, its home for me. I also got the chance to have a real relationship with all 26 people that graduated with me in the same program. UofM was geared towards Grad School/ Research programs and UMD was geared towards industry. Not to mention there was 500+ people in the program at UofM.
I also was offered a scholarship to attend UW but declined for the same reasons.

I always find it humorous when UofM alums dismiss UMD or call it a "safety school" etc..., since, as part of what is, in many ways, one university, the admission standards are the same. If you didn't get into one, you wouldn't get into the other. (Some specific programs, at both campuses, aside, of course)

I won't disagree with you on the research portion, but they still teach you everything you need to know to figure it out when you get into industry. I also completely understand the proximity to home.
Could be. I know I didn't get jack sh*t from the U and I had a extremely solid high school resume.

Ahhhh, I wouldn't be so sure. UMD is a very good ChEn school. I know it was #1 among schools that only offer up to masters in ChEn the last time I checked. I don't think it's in the same class as Minnesota, Wisconsin, or MIT, but it's still a very good school for ChEn.
