North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

The reffing stunk...the crowds and atmosphere were okay/good but not Final Five level...and yet that was the most fun I've had watching UMD play all year. What a fun game. Stupid to end it after 5 minutes. I couldn't believe that they were going to do it that when they announced it at the end of the game. Cheated the fans of some fun hockey. And that's not bitter grapes because I don't care that we didn't win the cup because of the shootout.

Beanpot and the Great Lakes Invitational have 20 minute overtimes...why not this?

And yes, to the gopher fan that posted about the PWR implications ... winning this game would have boosted them even more. Sucks they couldn't pull it off but a tie helps UMD out as well.

PS: Wasn't it fitting that the 3rd time these teams met it was a back forth game after two blowouts?

After the series at Mariucci I commented that it was a shame that these two teams didn't both decide to play well on the same night because it would have been a hell of a game. Tonight we got to see it.

I would rather play UMD and Jan before Penn State and Ohio State, I'm sure some players feel the same way.

Much more intensity in these 2 games than in the previous 4 combined.

There was more intensity in the final period of tonight's game than there will be from all the games against the Penn/Michigan/Ohio State teams this year combined.

I assume you mean MSU and not Michigan.
That's probably true this year, but I'm not sure it will stay that way. We'll see.

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

Hopefully that intensity continues for years to come. Plus once people realize this is their only time to see these teams in one place and against each other...hopefully it will be more of a destination.

This tournament will grow into something truly awesome. In the inaugural run we were treated to four great, entertaining games. The best thing about it is that regardless of how great or terrible treams are doing, there will always be plenty of motivation and intensity. The attendance to non-gopher games will follow.

Correct. I had originally typed, "The State schools" then I deleted that because I thought it would lead to people thinking I was referring to the Minnesota in-state schools. :o

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

Becky and the Ugly helmets are the only teams that will bring out the intensity like that in our new league, sad but true.

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

Love the sentiment, but PSU, OSU, and MSU have given us fits. We were 5-0-1 in those games because of Wilcox.

Yeah, but the intensity just wasn't there in any of the games. Close games don't always equate to high intensity games.

I'd like to see the last place team being the odd team out the following year, #1 hosting #4 and #2 hosting #3 on Friday (seedings based on the previous year's tournament), and Saturday at the X. I don't buy the line that it would be impossible to accommodate the scheduling for something like that.

I also don't expect it to happen. But if they want this tournament to grow and help culture a tangible intensity among the teams and the fans, they need to really make it worth something.

Fast forward to Buttmidji throwing their games every year to get the home series against the Gophers.

Let's throw all the bias aside, this tournament had a great inaugural run. I am pumped to see what it develops into.

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

Without a doubt, this weekend's North Star College Cup tourney was a huge success. I heard the crowds were good tonight and last night too (14,500+). But I don't like the shootout for a championship game. I'd like to see that change to a sudden death 20 min. OT in the future.

And as in last night's tilt with SCSU, the PP and Adam Wilcox saved the day again tonight to seal the NSCC championship for the Gophers. Wilcox was battle tested with 38 saves, but IMO was left out to dry by the D on a few plays. But he came up with some brilliant saves tonight, especially on the Farley shot that would have given him a Hatty. Wilcox was outstanding all weekend turning away 76 SOG/2 games and rightly deserved the MVP for the tournament. Tonight's game was hard fought, but I'd be amiss to not mention the poor job by referees tonight, which for a championship game was "almost" as bad as it gets. The 5 min major call on Marshall for contact to the head and a DQ and the boarding call on Ambroz with 1:27 left in the game were horrible calls and can't be compared to anything the intellectually challenged refs slapped UMD with tonight.

Fortunately, the Gopher PP was on again for the Gophers going 3 for 7 and 5/9 on the weekend (55%!). The Gophers came into the tourney with PP% at 16.5. Now after this weekend it's jumped to 19.6% (about average). If the PP continues like this, it becomes a major weapon that greatly increases their chances for a trip to the Frozen Four. Fasching hasn't scored on a regular shift in 11 games, but he got hot at the right time on the PP this weekend with 2 PPGs and led all players with 7 SOG tonight. I really like the compete level I saw from Travis Boyd this weekend on the PP as well, scoring his career best 7th and 8th Gs. Without a doubt, he's had the hottest stick for the Gophers since the beginning of the second half, going 5-5-10 in the last 8 games. He and Seth Ambroz seem to flow amazingly well now together on the third line and the PP. IMO Ambroz is arguably the most improved forward from last season and has now scored 8 goals in the last 12 games. Overall, a great weekend of college hockey! Only 12 straight B1G games left 'til the end of the season. Go Gophers! RAH! :)
