North Dakota's Team IS THE SIOUX DAMMIT

Re: North Dakota's Team IS THE SIOUX DAMMIT

adam@Smargon.net has a current (1/31/2012) list of over 1,500 college team nicknames (not including UND b/c of "troubles"). Only three of the 1,500 +have taken Indian tribal nicknames: Central Michigan Chippewas, Mississippi College Choctaws, Florida State Seminoles. There are no "tribal" DI college hockey teams, except UND. Which current DI teams would be most likely to join UND and leave the NCAA to form a new league which tolerates pseudotribal nicknames?

Maybe the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Re: North Dakota's Team IS THE SIOUX DAMMIT

Did you just decide that you needed to win this thread after getting upset someone else was declared the winner?

Sort of like UND and UNO suddenly needing to have an outdoor game now that "Have Not" Michigan Tech got not one, but two of them.

Re: North Dakota's Team IS THE SIOUX DAMMIT

In 2005, the NCAA began to review team names to see whether they were acceptable to those people they represented - the infamous "hostile and abusive" list. UND's "Fighting Sioux" was placed on that list...

The NCAA's 2005 decision to check with the people represented by a nickname to see if they accepted that nickname places the responsibility on those groups of people. It would be their responsibility to express any objections to the NCAA. If there was simply no response, as in the case of Standing Rock refusing to hold a vote, then that group of people failed to express their objection.

Seems like the NCAA changed the rules midway thru the game. Asking UND to obtain approval from these groups of people moves the focus from the groups to the school. Under this change, the group's responsibility to state their objection is no longer even part of the equation. The NCAA has now rigged the game so that when Standing Rock refuses to hold a vote, it's not the group that fails but rather the school. I say dirty pool.

Re: North Dakota's Team IS THE SIOUX DAMMIT

Not to beat a dead horse too hard, but North Dakota is really getting shafted here. I'm a Central Michigan graduate and resident of Northern Michigan and I'm pretty sure the CHIPPEWAS don't have the approval of every Chippewa tribe in Michigan. The only tribe that was ever mentioned when the NCAA cracked down was local Saginaw-Chippewa tribe that operates the Soaring Eagle Casino. One out of six tribes is good enough for a D1 school but one out of two isn't enough for the Fighting Sioux?

Re: North Dakota's Team IS THE SIOUX DAMMIT

The NCAA is simply acting like congress, exceeding their enumerated powers because nobody is stopping them.

Re: North Dakota's Team IS THE SIOUX DAMMIT

Traditionalists should implore the UND brass to return to the original nickname, the Flickertails. It was a travesty that they changed it in the first place. North Dakota's flickertail population, envious of their rodent neighbors to the east, unanimously supported the Flickertail mascot. They just couldn't lobby like the Sioux.

Re: North Dakota's Team IS THE SIOUX DAMMIT

My understanding is that UND got a lease for the Ralph for $1 as long as they kept the Sioux name. If that is the case, is the rink going to follow through and hold to the original agreement?

Absent any modifications, it probably depends on what the "agreement" provides will happen if they don't keep the name.

*resisting urge to make a lame nazi reference here*

That was close, DAMMIT!
