UND really needs to stop pussyfooting around here and come out publicly completely against this. Stop relying on the SBoHE, ND AG or anyone else to handle this, do it yourself. Run commercials, buy newspaper ads, do newspaper, television and radio interviews. Explain exactly how and why this is not a good thing. The general public are a bunch of blind, moronic sheep. They believe this is a good thing. UND has to explain why it isn't or they are doomed.

I hope the Sioux name stays with you guys permanently. We don't have any residual indian issues here in Ohio as we got rid of all of them about 170 years ago or so. The NCAA has gone over the edge in what they think they have authority over and I think all the affected schools have puss*ied out and caved instead of doing the right thing and suing the NCAA in a class action suit. The wimps over at Miami bailed on being Redskins even before the NCAA mandate came out.

I still say the NCAA lost whatever moral high ground they had when they issued this illegal decoration the minute they blinked when they saw Florida State lining up with Lawyers and reps from the Seminole tribes backing them and how hard they were going to fight for their nickname. Lets be honest about it here, that whole issuing there was pretty much set up to get FSU to stop having a kid dressed in buckskins throwing around a flaming spear. Bullying around a bunch of other smaller schools who wouldn't have the budget to fight the NCAA on this was just window dressing to let the say, oh but we're not singling out FSU, just all of the racist schools that we picked out. Never mind how they didn't have the Aztec's on that list. They blinked and let Florida State go on about their business, and then proceeded to screw over a lot of other schools with this.

This is UND we are talking about here, if you think the NCAA will be afarid of public backlash in droping the hammer, you're crazy. It may get some national news for a day or two then dissapear. If this were FSU going through the same process today, ESPN would have a creepy regional correspondent posted outside the closest Seminole reserve trying to snag interviews, "legal experts" on SportsCenter, the whole nine yards. Pick a new mascot and get on with it.

And amazingly life went on, as it will in North Dakota.

If we had been the Southwestern Ohio University Miami, then I could see the point, but no matter how you parse it, redskin is viewed by many as an offensive term. I have no issue with the change whatsoever.

15 years later alumni are still wearing Redskin apparel, you hear the occasional "Let's Go Redskins" at sporting events, and half the handles on Miami message boards (who am I kidding there is only one) contain the word skin. It's not like a name change suddently erases all the heritage and tradition behind a school.

Any lingering resentment among Miami alums probably would have disappeared by now if they hadn't picked a replacement mascot/logo that looks straight out of the XFL, but that is a conversation for another place and time.

Edit: I forgot to include a dammit IN MY POST DAMMIT!

I agree. Seeing as the NCAA hockey tournament provides the best chance every year to sell your university to a quasi-national audience, it only makes sense to use that platform to completely humiliate yourselves and reinforce everyone's pre-conceptions about your school. For the second year in a row. That's sure to bring in those smart and talented out-of-state students!
