Re: NMU vs UMD 11OCT09
It sounds like a broken record. Too many penalties, AGAIN!!! A win is a win, but in reality I see another disappointing season to come. This season, Twenty to twenty-two wins is all the program is capable of this year. There are no reason for the penalties, but it will continue for the rest of year, like previous seasons. The team roster isn't filled with underclassmen. With the difficult beginning half of the schedule (thanks to that ... .... Anastos), Northern will be lucky to say the least to be .500 by the end of '09.
I don't believe firing Walt would make a improvement to the program; rather make it worse. Who wants to come to a Division II school with a substandard budget??? Arguably, the replacement candidates would also be substandard. Let's hire another assistant coach who was a volunteer coach before they came to NMU, right!?! Last year I jumped onto this blog and supported firing Walt, but after consideration of the circumstances at NMU, firing Walt would only plunge the program into Lake State status, a disappointing glimour of the past!!! Even though I disagree how Walt handles the program regarding taking numerous bad penalties, he is the best choice for the program. I have just accepted that the NMU program should be happy to have a program at all. Division II programs such as NMU cannot financially compete with the Michigan States, Michigan, and Notre Dames of the college hockey world. The dynamics of college hockey have long since changed since the early glory years of the late '80's-92. In sum, I hope for the best this season, but in reality I have accepted NMU will always be a competitive 4th-6th place team in the CCHA. Go CATS!
