NMU vs. Michigan Tech, Feb 21 and 22: You Suck! No, YOU suck! And so on.

Re: NMU vs. Michigan Tech, Feb 21 and 22: You Suck! No, YOU suck! And so on.

4260 & 3944 are important numbers this weekend. Those were the attendance numbers at NMU and at Tech in October. How much will they differ with a live TV broadcast?

Weather is going to be a deciding factor. With Blizzard conditions Friday, I don't think too many people will be driving to the road games for either team.

And can someone get Bishop John Doerfler to swing by campus some time this week to exorcize Dollar Bill Wirtz from the Berry and PEIF, please? If we want to extrapolate data, attendance started dropping when Charter quit carrying the games. ;)

I don't think TV takes a bite out of college attendance. Certainly, I'm less likely to go to NHL games, and pay $75 for a seat (and not even that great of a seat!), $15 parking and $9 beers, when I can watch it at home in hi-def, but the economics of college hockey games are such that I'd go even if they were on TV. I don't know if TV will help grow the game all that much, since the big selling point in college hockey is the in-arena atmosphere (Once people actually show up, they're hooked), but I don't think it hurts attendance.

That would be my sentiment on the subject... Where it helps is that Little Johnny M., who plays on a 7 year old house team in a neighboring town, happens to see the game on TV... His parents notice he watches... After several times watching, the parents see that Johnny has been good in school... They reward Johnny with a trip to an actual game...

It's scenarios like this where everyone wins...

Hockey's the one sport where being there in person is much better than viewing on tv...more fans should remember that.

Absolutely, but, it's hard to promote your product when you're not advertising it.

And casual fans are morons. Unless you're advertising on TV/Radio/Newspapers with frequency they're not going to remember when games are to attend.

On the flip side, your core fanbase needs to be treated well for being season ticket holders. Don't go alienating them to cater to the casual fan market.

And the biggest thing to draw and keep fans: just win.

You may wish to delve into why Charter stopped game production. As for the assertion that was the reason for a decline, wasn't there another team that started up at the same time in the market with cheap, usually free, tickets and beer? Could that have been a factor? Maybe an economy in a downward spiral as well had something to do with it. It would be interesting to see the attendance numbers from 2004-2013. Scheduling this year has added to the problem. Two home series during deer season/Turkey Break. Another during semester break, yet another scheduled for Spring Break. Add a Friday Night up against the UP 200 dog sled race and you have a grand total of 6 conference home games (Tech, Mankato and Alaska) that have a chance to draw a good crowd.

UAA games are $13.50 a general admission seat (assuming you don't pay an "outlet" fee), $6 parking and $7 beers.
I don't know the price of popcorn and hot dogs. Guess that shows what I buy. My bad?
Ran a promotion last two series: 2 tickets, 2 hot dogs, 2 sodas, $19.50 total. You pay to park, not part of the deal but it still sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Cheap date night....less than a movie, popcorn and soda.
Are the prices similar for NMU and Tech games?

Sheesh. I put the winky face to point out that I was joking. Attendance has been falling for a long time, the few years it was on Charter didn't hurt attendance (contrary to the prior AD's stance).

If you're looking to pick a fight, go find a pony of a certain color. :p

No fighting to do. I'd actually like to take a look at the numbers over time and see what they look like. I do recall a dip around the time the Rangers started up, but it didn't appear that there was a corresponding gain when they went belly up.

Man I spend like 15 minutes thinking up a good insult for nmu community college, and I get is one comment and it's from a fellow Techophile? I'd be surprised, based on this if those people could even find the rink.

The rivalry isn't what it used to be.

Flashback: I remember when Matt Siddall made Jordan Foote turtle like a (kitten) back in December 2007, when Pat Bateman destroyed Colin Murphy in overtime back in winter 2006... oh, those were the days.

And then I remember The Game that Shall Not Be Mentioned.

Re: NMU vs. Michigan Tech, Feb 21 and 22: You Suck! No, YOU suck! And so on.

How many Northern fans are making the trek to Houghton and how many Tech fans are making the trek to Marquette? Didn't seem like there were a whole lot of opposing fans at the games in October, either that or they just didn't have a lot to cheer about...

I haven't looked it up to verify it, but I'm pretty sure Colin Murphy was a senior in 04-05.

Then it was 05.

You're right... I just looked through my pictures for confirmation. :)

I used to have the numbers per team/per year from 2000 through 08 or so, but that was a few laptop hard drives ago.

Quickly looking through USCHO's yearly average though...

Code:
Year	Gms	Avg	% Cap	Win%
13-14	13	2,269	60.4	.443#	(Royales Inaugural Season) (#Through 2/20/2014)
12-13	15	2,845	75.8	.447
11-12	20	2,964	78.9	.541
10-11	20	2,541	67.7	.449
09-10	19	2,953	78.7	.585*	(Rangers Final Season)(*Cats in NCAA's)
08-09	19	2,932	78.1	.524	(Stock Market bottomed out July 2009)
07-08	20	2,770	73.8	.500	(Economy took a sh*t)
06-07	18	3,315	88.3	.390	(Rangers Inaugural Season)
05-06	21	3,222	85.8	.575
04-05	19	3,320	88.5	.637
03-04	16	3,271	87.1	.561
02-03	19	3,225	85.9	.561
Capacity (per USCHO) = 3,754

I don't know how USCHO handled the Wisconsin games, but there doesn't appear to be a bump in those years.

The dip from from 06-07 to 07-08 is easily explainable with the Cats record in 06-07. Not too many fans wanted to come after that tough season. I am confused with both the drop in 05-06 after the stellar 04-05 season and the 10-11 dip in attendance which I would think would have happened the following season (like the 06-07 to 07-08 season).

The 'Cats seemed to have weathered the economic struggle well by maintaining a 75% capacity from the start of the documented recession (Dec 2007)

How many Tech fans will make the trek up the hill from Wads, Houghton or McNair in lousy weather when they can watch on TV?

The students are a depressingly lazy bunch of asshats since they were given free tickets. It's absolutely PATHETIC. They don't even have to treck... They run a shuttle. They still don't show.

Pathetic is a perfect word for the current students. Embarrassing is another equally fitting one.
