Niagara Purple Eagles 2011-12

By Candace Horgan Women's Editor • Thursday, December 8, 2011

Women's Picks:
Clarkson at Niagara

Candace: Niagara might have enough to get one tie against Clarkson, but there's no percentage in picking a tie. Clarkson 3-1, 2-0
Arlan: In case you haven't noticed, I'm running my own private Sweeps Week here, otherwise, I'd give Niagara some love. Clarkson 3-2, 3-2

Niagara drops both games 3-1 and 1-0 as a result of bad untimely penalties and no offensive punch.

Three of the 4 goals given up were Clarkson power play goals. The lone goal Niagara scored was on the PP.

The lack of offense may not be entirely the fault of Niagara, as Clarkson is currently 4th in the country defensively, allowing just 1.55 goals per game. It is frustrating to watch your team get shut down, though.

Clarky Soph Erica Howe is quietly putting together a great season. Right now she would be the goaler of the ECAC in my books.

They make mention of top rookie forwards and defence among stats, but fail to make mention of rookie goaltenders. So I’d like to give a shout out to freshmen goaltenders Carman MacDonald (5-4-2) of St Lawrence and Abby Ryplanski (5-5-2) of Niagara.

As for overall tenders... Erica Howe is THE BEST goalie in NCAA Div 1 Hockey. The two goalies above Howe in the stats play for Minneasota and Wisconsin.

Numbers routinely give a false impression to individual credibility in the nets, and at all positions. Many people I'm sure would like to debate this with you. Good tender indeed though. :)

Re: Niagara Purple Eagles 2011-12

The Purple Eagles hit the ice yesterday to start preparing for their series vs Mercyhurst next weekend. Practice yesterday involved no pucks and post break weigh ins.... Team has been off for 3 weeks, but should be well rested and ready for the huge challenge.
