NIAGARA: The Niagara women’s hockey team got back into the win column this past weekend with a sweep of RPI, defeating the Engineers by scores of 5-4 and 3-2…Kristen Richards scored on a penalty shot in overtime to push Niagara past the Engineers on Friday, while three unanswered goals and the strong play of freshman goalie Abby Ryplanski in her first career start pushed Niagara to a 3-2 Saturday afternoon win…Niagara is now 2-4-0 with the win…Junior Jenna Hendrikx leads the team with four goals, three assists and seven points, while Jessica Hitchcock (3-3-6) and Kelsey Welch (2-4-6) are right behind…Niagara hosts Saint Lawrence on a rare Tuesday night tilt before hitting the road, taking on Yale and Princeton…Niagara is now 2-0-0 against ECAC foes this year, while 0-4 against Hockey East foes…The Purple Eagles are now 2-2-0 in Dwyer Arena…Niagara has two wins, with two different game-winning goal scorers (Richards and Welch)…As of Saturday afternoon, Niagara is tied for the 6th longest unbeaten streak in the nation at two games…Head coach Josh Sciba picked up his first two career wins this weekend, while both goalies who played (Sarah Moses on Friday and Abby Ryplanski) picked up their first career wins.

College Hockey America Honor Roll

Jessica Hitchcock, Niagara (Sophomore, Foward, LaSalle, Ontario)- Hitchcock led the Purple Eagles this past weekend with a goal, two assists and three points as Niagara swept visiting RPI by scores of 5-4 and 3-2. Hitchcock scored a goal and an assist during Friday’s 5-4 victory, with her goal coming on the man-advantage. On Saturday, Hitchcock got Niagara going, as she earned an assist on Niagara’s first goal of the game, helping Niagara rally from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 win.

Abby Ryplanski, Niagara (Freshman, Goaltender, Winnipeg, MB)- Ryplanski made her first career start as a Purple Eagle on Saturday, shutting the door on the Engineers by a final score of 3-2. The rookie made 22 saves to shut the door, finishing with a 2.00 goals against average and a .917 save percentage.

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - After a three goal lead, the Niagara women's hockey team (2-5-0, 0-0-0 CHA) were faced with six unanswered goals from the St. Lawrence Saints (3-0-1, 0-0-0 ECAC) for a 6-3 loss Tuesday evening at Dwyer Arena.

Sophomore forward Kaleigh Chippy got Niagara on the board first at the 16:59 mark of the first period when she picked up a lost puck right outside the blue line and skated in towards St. Lawrence netminder Carmen MacDonald and poked it passed her. The Purple Eagles struck 4:48 minutes later to make it a two-goal game. Junior forward Jenna Hendrikx scored her fifth of the season when she stole the puck off a Saints defender and picked the corner, over the shoulder of MacDonald.

The second stanza started with Niagara tallying its third goal of the game when a shot from senior defender Erica Owczarczak deflected off a defender before hitting the back of the net.

St. Lawrence would then begin their comeback with six unanswered goals. Defender Mel Desrochers put the Saints on the board 8:02 minutes into the third with a wrist shot over the shoulder of Moses. About four minutes later, forward Margo Lund took a feed from Alley Bero to make it a one-goal game. At 14:06, captain Karell Emard sped down the left wing and ripped a laser passed Moses making it a 3-3 game.

Jessica Hon added the fifth goal for St. Lawrence on a 2-on-1 at the 9:53 mark and Vanessa Emond finished the scoring with an empty netter with 21 seconds left.

Moses had 24 stops for the game.

Thanks for posting the recap. According to the box score, SLU began their comeback in the 2nd period. The game-winning goal, which was omitted above, came via a short-handed goal by Bero. Is it just my perception, or have their been an unusual number of streaky games already this season, where one team gets a lead and the other comes back? Maybe those type of games are just more memorable.

Hello Purple Eagle fans! Just wondering if anyone is making the trek to Columbus this season for the series against our Buckeyes? I forget whether it is next month or December. Hope to see some of you there. Good luck this season!

The Purple Eagles made the trek to New Haven, CT today and held practice at the Ingalls Rink in preparation for their game vs the Bulldogs tomorrow.
What a unique facility! Good luck Purple Eagles!

COLLEGE HOCKEY AMERICA WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS FOR GAMES THROUGH MONDAY, OCTOBER 24

College Hockey America Goaltender of the Week
Abby Ryplanski - Niagara - Freshman, Goaltender, Winnipeg, MB.
Goalie – 5’4” – Ryplanski was a rock in net for the Purple Eagles, helping Niagara to a weekend sweep of Yale and Princeton. Ryplanski earned a 2-0-0 record, along with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .959 save percentage. Ryplanski led the Niagara defense, giving up one goal in the 5-1 win over Yale and one goal in a 3-1 win over Princeton. The freshman made 47 saves in her two outings that weekend.

College Hockey America Honor Roll
Kaleigh Chippy, Niagara (Sophomore, Foward, Cleveland, Ohio) Chippy scored two goals, three assists and five points during a weekend sweep of Yale and Princeton and a midweek loss to St. Lawrence. Against the Saints on Tuesday, Chippy picked up a goal and an assist to start off the week. Against Princeton, Chippy scored a goal, two assists and three points during a 3-1 win over Princeton. Chippy had a hand in all three goals on Saturday. On the weekend, she averaged 0.67 goals per game, an assist per game and 1.67 points per game.

Kayla Raniwsky, Niagara (Freshman, Foward, Windsor, Ont.) – Raniwsky played well for Niagara this past weekend, playing in all three games. Raniwsky has recorded two assists and two points in three games last year, with an assist coming against Yale and an assist against Princeton.

With a 2-1 lead going into the 3rd period vs Vermont, the Purple Eagle killed off an early 5 on 3 and then came down the ice and scored to make it 3-1. Niagara then had to face another 5 on 3 with two undisciplined penalties (one in the offensive zone and one in the defensive zone). Vermont scored on the 5 on 3 and then on the 5 on 4 to tie the game.

Good luck in game two today Purple Eagles!

The Purple Eagles were 26 seconds away from victory this afternoon vs Vermont, but with yet another player in the box and the Vermont goalie out for the extra attacker, Vermont tied the game to send it to another overtime. Game ended in a 4-4 tie.

If Niagara can begin to get their untimely penalties under control they will get beyond a sub 500 record which currently stands at 4-5-2.

Niagara will host Colgate next weekend.... Good luck Purple Eagles.

Jessica Hitchcock, Niagara (Sophomore, Forward, LaSalle, Ontario) - Hitchcock finished a weekend with two ties against Vermont with two goals, two assists and four points. Hitchcock picked up a goal and an assist in both contests, a 3-3 tie and a 4-4 tie against Vermont. Hitchcock now has at least a point in six of her last eight games.

Although Niagara only managed to get 3 goals past Sr goaltender Kimberly Sass this weekend, the Purple Eagles were able to sweep the series and improve their record to 6-5-2.

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Freshman forward Kalli Funk tapped in the game winner to give the Niagara women's hockey team (6-5-2) the 1-0 victory over the Colgate Raiders (4-5-1) Saturday afternoon at Dwyer Arena.

Looking forward to seeing the Purple Eagles at the Alfond next weekend.
 
The Purple Eagles actually leave for Maine today, arriving well in advance of their game 1 (of 2) start of 2:00 PM Saturday Nov 12. Niagara will certainly have their work cut out for them with the Black Bears. IMHO, the keys to a successful series will be to once again cut down on the very untimely penalties, get their scoring back (when compared to the Colgate Series), and to continue to receive consistent goaltending.

After starting the season 0-4, I think Niagara feels very fortunate to be sitting at 6-5-2. I wish them well this weekend and hope that they can continue to show their team character when needed.

I'm also very pleased that Niagara received CHA awards this past week in all three categories... Well done! However, it should be noted (and they know) that all but Syracuse (one exhibition game) had last weekend off. None the less, they are deserving of the acknowledgement! Congrats!
