NHL 2016.2: An All-Canada Final (Playoffs and Off-season)

Re: NHL 2016.2: An All-Canada Final (Playoffs and Off-season)

At least some of the NBCers seem to actually appreciate the game.
And that goes a long, long way. But I still watched the game with good portions of it with the volume turned way down.

Re: NHL 2016.2: An All-Canada Final (Playoffs and Off-season)

Nashville booing Bettman. They really are a hockey town.
My initial thought too. However, when I thought about it some I realized it really is just Hockey 101. Knowing Bettman is Dooshbag is like knowing that when the puck goes in the net it's a goal, not a touchdown.

Re: NHL 2016.2: An All-Canada Final (Playoffs and Off-season)

Final breakdown of scoring in the playoffs by the nationality of the player.

Canada 176 39.2%
Austria 4 0.9%
US 124 27.6%
Czech 8 1.8%
Sweden 77 17.1%
Norway 4 0.9%
Russia 29 6.5%
Finland 10 2.2%
Swiss 8 1.8%
Germany 7 1.6%
Denmark 1 0.2%
Slovakia 1 0.2%
449 100.0%

Re: NHL 2016.2: An All-Canada Final (Playoffs and Off-season)

So does anyone still think Toews is better than Crosby?

I've heard a few people say they would pick Toews over Crosby to be on their team, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone say Toews is a better hockey player. Other than some of the rabid HFboards Hawks fans, there are not a lot of Toews haters out there. Crosby had a lot of them from the moment he hit the NHL ice.

There's someone on here who might still think it, he definitely did at the time.

Is this not basically the same thing though? Why would you want a worse player on your team? I mean, barring some huge personal issues (like Patrick Kane or something).

It's possible for a player to have more talent yet be less useful to a team because he wouldn't fit into the system used by the current coach, or could have a serious attitude problem and create locker room turmoil. I'm not saying that's the situation between Crosby and Toews, but it's a consideration for various players over the years.

Well specifically in this case, yeah, it's kinda silly that's my main point. I agree that systems matter in terms of personnel (Sullivan's requires speedy guys, there's a reason why a bunch of guys like Perron and Plotnikov got moved) but that's more of a thing with the more dependent players than the all around super stars.

Re: NHL 2016.2: An All-Canada Final (Playoffs and Off-season)

That you even brought Kessel into this makes me not want to bother with your typical dumbassery, but I'm bored and unproductive here today, so here goes:

Also, Tavares would have been 17 or 18 in 2010, so doubtful he'd have been ready to win the Conn Smythe.

Kessel... seriously? The guy has won absolutely nothing ever.

Intangibles matter and Toews and Kane max out on intangibles.

Edit: And next time have the guts to sign your rep.
Gurtholfin circa 2015 lmao. I would agree that Kane is better than Kessel but it's amazing how short he sells Kessel in this simply due to him not having won a cup yet.

No one will ever accuse me of being a Hawks fan so the praise I think Toews is due is not from some fawning fan boy, but I'd take him straight up for any player at any position in the NHL today. And it might not be close. Remove every point he's scored so far in the playoffs and just watch him play the game. No forward in the league is better at occupying two players (or more) at once than Toews. His inate ability to move pucks from one zone to the next, regardless of who is on the ice with him or who is checking him, is a thing of beauty. As hard as it is to compliment someone with Gretzky-like comparisons, he routinely sees the ice as well as #99 did. He supports the puck generally as well as any forward in the game. And this year he's still scoring a point per game in the postseason. He's also a top-notch leader. And not that it matters in the grand scheme of things, I even give him props for playing NCAA hockey (and for those who don't know the ND in my name is not for the Sioux, its for Notre Dame), because -- well -- this is a college hockey board.

You're not watching the game with a trained eye if you think there are a handful of centers who are doing all the things I noted better than Toews. You may have a trained eye, I don't know one way or another, but if you do you're not using it. As for your statement that you could have replaced Toews with Crosby (or anyone) and won two cups, well that is the ludicrous statement because it cannot be proven, by trained observation or with any other means. The only thing we do know is that Toews has won two Cups with the Hawks and is perhaps 60 minutes from a 3rd. As for being surrounded by all those good players Sidney Crosby has had one of the best players in the game as a teammate for years and they're not winning anything anymore. And Hossa could not help him or his Detroit mates win a Cup. Toews also makes players who share the ice with him better. Whatever pair of D-men they run out there benefit by having him back there with him. There are plenty of other great centers out there who do a lot on the ice. I just happen to think Toews is the best of the bunch.

Kane and Toews just get it done in ways that no stat sheet will ever quantify and I hate having to write that. I respect the crap out of both and were I to start my franchise from the ground up today I'd be hard pressed not to take either one of them first. Goddamit anyway.
Slap Shot

They'd be the first center and first forward I would take if I was forming an NHL squad.

For the record I have no problem with most of these posters I just think it's funny to see these quotes after Toews scored what, 1 point in their last playoff run? And they've had back to back first round exits.

Just looked at some Vegas sports books... Pittsburgh is favored to win next year, with Chicago having the next best odds.

Hmmm... a Pittsburgh vs. Chicago final might be worth watching, even if it is like cheering for salmonella over E.Coli.

Re: NHL 2016.2: An All-Canada Final (Playoffs and Off-season)

Yeah IDK about CHI being a favorite, they're actively shopping big parts of their team due to their perilous cap situation, exited in the first round back to back years etc.

What do people have against the Hawks?

I think of them as neutral as milk.

Didn't Kane punch or assault a couple of women in Madison a few years back?

I understand you're going with the "What have you done for me lately" argument but the facts are that since 2009 Pittsburgh has 3 Cups and Chicago has 3 Cups (Boston has 1, and LA has two in that time span). Did I say Kane and Toews would be my picks to start my team? Yes. Would I take Crosby in a heartbeat? Yes.

The better question is would I start my team with anyone currently playing for the Minnesota Wild? The answer would be no.

I didn't hear that. I know he and his lunkhead cousin punched out a cabby over a quarter once.

He seems like a cementhead; a.k.a., a jock.
