Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

Would that be the segment that loudly proclaims Chicago is a "world class city" in league with San Francisco, New York, and Tokyo?

Hint: No, it's not, they just have an elevated train and a few more yuppie whites than the average Rust Belt urban war zone. :D

Actually, it once was a world class city, in the 1980s or so. It's been downhill for a few decades since though.

I'm sorry, but neither San Francisco nor Tokyo is a world class city.

The complete triplet is New York, Paris, Rome. C'est tout. Arrivederci.

So some numbskull tried bringing his concealed weapon into Amalie Arena for last night's Habs/Bolts game. He was apprehended during the game in his section. Oops.

Too hard to link to a story on my phone, but I'm sure you fine patrons of the sport of hockey can Google if you're interested.

Back to the FIB thing... During college... summer of 91, I worked the summer in the Dells. Lived in a house with 9 other guys and 2 dogs, partied, had a pretty darn good time.

But my job was waitering and bartending and the prime clientele were Chicagoans. And not the "classier" ones that like my family could afford to go up to the lakes, but the Dells crowd. It was that summer that I was made fully aware of why Wisconsinites view them as FIBs.

What a bunch of asshats.

Every now and then, I use the term "Friendly Illinois Buddies". But that's mostly because my company's territory is Wisconsin, Illinois and da UP, so we kind of have to be on friendly terms with the FIBs.

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

Growing up, I heard Wisconsinites use the term FIB when talking of people like my family who would vacation up north.

That and GDflatlanders. As a transplanted NoDak, I've resisted calling FIBs flatlanders. Illinois may be mostly flat, in a Miracle Max kind of way, but it is not f l a t.

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

I never meant to imply that it is arbitrary.
Should have phrased my comment differently. My point was simply that there's a Method to the Madness on Madison, and you obviously agree.

These guys are wired for Cups. Not Presidents trophies or series victories or home ice.

But they did wait too long last year to kick it in and it cost them another Cup. They were a better team than the Kings and would have beaten the Rangers.

Seems as though they learned a lesson. Hope they keep it up.

Good article. Again, we agree.

Quick personal aside: My bio is loosely analogous to yours. Parents met in Chicago; I was born in Illinois. Like you, I've decided I'm not going back. But there are things I love about the place and I do wish the Hawks well.

Blackhawks score. Series over.

The way the Blackhawks play defense (or as gopher fans say: since the Blackhawks are boring cheaters), it's hard to imagine the brooms not coming out tonight.

So are the Habs playing "Feels Like 93" with their win tonight :p

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

Did I just see a video package air on NBCSN where a US serviceman did a "shoutout" to his family in Minnesota, and then proceeded to throw a Minnesota Wild jersey on the ground?

Umm...

Anyone else catch the irony in this?

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

Sheesh i actually thought minnesota would give chicago a series

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

Just doesn't matter what the Wild do. They can't finish, and Chicago scores at will. On to a long summer of watching the Twins.

Reminds me of the story about the salesman making a pitch to a potential customer who'd be a really large account. During polite social conversation, it turns out that the salesman had once lived in Montreal. The potential customer asked him why he left. The salesman replied, "I couldn't stand the people any longer. It seemed like everyone I met was either a hooker or a hockey player."
--- wait a minute, says the potential customer, my wife's from Montreal!
"Oh really," replies the salesman, without missing a beat, "what team did she play for?"
