Re: NHL 2015-16: John Scott for MVP!

Sharks deal Stalock, Ben Smith, and a conditional fourth round draft pick in 2018 to the Maple Leafs for goaltender James Reimer and forward Jeremy Morin.

Who will be on the ice for Washington tonight, Gurth? Should be a fun game to watch.

Game is at 11:30 today.

Hossa (still hurt) and Wiese (Visa issue?) are not playing, but Ladd should be in the lineup.

May take a few games for everyone to mesh.

Re: NHL 2015-16: John Scott for MVP!

Much better this Sunday.:)

Reflections:

1. Wildly premature, but the inevitable thought is that the Hawks and Caps would put on an amazing Cup Final.

2. Hope #4 got his money's worth on the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Wow. How do you call that and create a 6x3 in the closing minutes?

As per WGN interview: Hjarlmarsson says he was high-sticked on a face-off situation, but it went on uncalled. Hence his first amendment violation. From there, #4 admitted he was "sweating pretty good" in the penalty box; and allowed that he probably needed to take his teammates out for dinner as a result of taking the penalty.

3. Wondering why the Caps didn't keep Holtby pulled and go with a 6x4 attack after the 6x3 goal. I know all the arguments against, but I do feel that would have given the Caps their best chance for a tying goal.

4. That was a fun one.

The Caps are San Jose East. They're not going to the Finals.
That; and the fact that the President's Trophy is a kiss of death in the normal year.

Note that I didn't predict it; just indicated it would be a great show.

That's a fantastic myth. About one in four PT winners end up winning the Cup, compared to one in sixteen playoff teams. One doesn't really affect the other (other than with home ice and theoretically easier matchups), but winning the Presidents' Trophy is in no way a bad thing.

The Hawks won it in 91 iirc and then got beat in the first round.

That's all the proof I need that the President's Trophy sucks. :p

Were you around for 2013?

(and by the way, losing to the Sharks in the first round after winning the PT in 2000 almost put me off hockey when I was a kid)

Re: NHL 2015-16: John Scott for MVP!

Oh, he was around.

To me, 2013 is the exception that proves the general rule. Half that season was lost to the lockout. I wouldn't necessarily say that every second of the 2013 run was flat out sprint, but it certainly was starkly different than the usual marathon. Having one team go wire-to-wire like the Hawks did in 2013 is highly unusual. I doubt that Coach Q would have approached the season the same way had the normal slate of 82 games had been in store. If you can think of another wire-to-wire example that's halfway recent, do share.

1 of 4 SC winners also won the PT? I'm willing to believe you researched this number and are correct. I'll admit, I am surprised that winning both trophies is as common as 25%. But while that changes my opinion a little, it doesn't change it much. It's still extremely difficult to win both trophies. There's still a risk of peaking too early, of emptying the gas tank during the regular season. Obviously you want to win every time you take the ice. Obviously the President's Trophy is something to be proud of if you bag it. But in the end, there really is only One Goal.

Last, though probably least important, you lifted my comment out of context. The original question was whether the Washington Capitals had a good shot at reaching this year's SC Finals. If want to take the "yes" side of that debate, I'm sure bronconick will be glad to engage you.;) For my part, I was speaking pretty casually. I'm not all that worried about who represents the East when the Finals arrive. PT? Fine. No PT? Fine. The particular opponent may have an impact on the type of series that occurs. But anyone who qualifies is going to be good.
