Re: New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Sea
The school still has ton of issues to work out in our new building. Some of which is borderline inexcusable. The most glaring:
Smoking is illegal in the facility. Not against "the rules". Illegal. The amount of it that is occurring is appalling. I don't even recall this ever happening at either the Civic Auditorium or at the Qwest/CenturyLink Center.
In this same vein of poor security oversight, the ushers, at least in my section, are doing an abominable job of barring entry to seating areas while the puck is in play. The usher in our section is seldom in evidence, or, is too busy watching the game to do his or her job. The amount of disruption this is causing is unreal. The upper levels of Baxter Arena are quite steep and any one individual, even much less any group of individuals, blocks your view for however long it takes them to negotiate the aisle stairs and get in their seats. Worse, there is the issue of general unfamiliarity with the building and late arrivals to to the game that is making this a huge problem. We had a hard time seeing any of the first half of the 1st period last night because of this issue, which should not even exist in the first place, and has not ever been a problem before at either of our other two previous venues.
Concession issues, while improved from the first night, are appalling. That is faint praise since there was nowhere to go but up in the first place. If you make any visit to a concession stand, be prepared to miss half a period of the game. This is a little less of a problem at beverage stations, which they, unbelievably, on the first night, only staffed with a single individual per station, and issue since corrected (DOH!). Last night, credit card/debit card purchases were impossible. We were told "The system is down". The whole game. Who carries cash any more? I rarely have any cash on me. In today's society there is almost no need any more to carry any cash. Not unless you go to Baxter Arena, I guess. This problem was not limited to just last night, either. My educated guess is that it is, perhaps, somehow related to ongoing internet connection problems in the building. Additionally, I had the gals working a beverage station I was at tell me that the problem at their particular station was that none of the electrical outlets next to their stand, which they needed to use, work. We were told this opening night. Same issue, still, last night, 2 weeks later.
Can you say, long line at the only ATM machine that I have so far been able to locate in the arena?
Because of the narrow concourses, oblivious people standing in small groups, chatting, are causing huge traffic issues getting around the building. Frankly, this is also something I consider something security should put the kibosh on. It is a bad enough problem that they need to adopt some sort of "No Loitering" policy in concourse trafficways. I can't imagine what is going on the minds of people that are doing this, to say nothing of their sheer numbers.
Even though alcohol is served in the building, the lack of beer selection, and the lack of diversity of availability of what you can buy, is crazy. Last night, they pared the list of liquors that are available back to, get this, four!!! No white liquors at all! The disgust exhibited to us by the bartenders at the liquor station about this was hilarious. They were madder about this than we were since they are the ones bearing the brunt of patron anger about this. And, by the way, no wine is served that we can find, something Mrs. Red Cows is militantly upset about, since that is about all she ever has to drink.
I am trying to be patient about all this since this is a new facility and all but things seem to being going downhill and not up and it is all very concerning. Everywhere you go, it seems like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
Facility management should be like going to a musical. You really shouldn't notice the orchestra during the performance. It's just there. If you do, it's because the orchestra sucks.
