New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Season

Re: New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Sea

The gamesmanship is precisely why it should be banned. The building (and all of the ones built in the last few years that have the setup) is capable of a normal setup. The allowance is for older buildings that can't be changed reasonably, everyone else is simply abusing it.
Totally agree. Complete bush league.

Except I think that if the NCAA (or, by inference, presumably, member universities that have hockey programs) felt strongly about this they'd have put a stop to it a long time ago. And, they knew what the school's plans were here in this regard, as well. Existing NCAA guidelines were followed. See page 17 of this PDF, entitled "NCAA Publications, Ice Hockey 2014-15 and 2015-16 Rules and Interpretations" of the acceptable layouts, which is an exact depiction of the one UNO employs:

If anybody has a problem with this, they need to take it up with the NCAA since their own rule book explicitly approves what UNO did.

No, that is for the layout of the benches, penalty boxes and timer's box. There is nothing regarding the walkway to the visitor's locker room.

Page 123 depicts the legal entry points for the opposing teams and accurately depicts the way this is done at Baxter Arena.

I am not trying to defend what was done, necessarily, but this was entirely done within the letter of the law of the existing NCAA rules.

Re: New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Sea

The school still has ton of issues to work out in our new building. Some of which is borderline inexcusable. The most glaring:

Smoking is illegal in the facility. Not against "the rules". Illegal. The amount of it that is occurring is appalling. I don't even recall this ever happening at either the Civic Auditorium or at the Qwest/CenturyLink Center.

In this same vein of poor security oversight, the ushers, at least in my section, are doing an abominable job of barring entry to seating areas while the puck is in play. The usher in our section is seldom in evidence, or, is too busy watching the game to do his or her job. The amount of disruption this is causing is unreal. The upper levels of Baxter Arena are quite steep and any one individual, even much less any group of individuals, blocks your view for however long it takes them to negotiate the aisle stairs and get in their seats. Worse, there is the issue of general unfamiliarity with the building and late arrivals to to the game that is making this a huge problem. We had a hard time seeing any of the first half of the 1st period last night because of this issue, which should not even exist in the first place, and has not ever been a problem before at either of our other two previous venues.

Concession issues, while improved from the first night, are appalling. That is faint praise since there was nowhere to go but up in the first place. If you make any visit to a concession stand, be prepared to miss half a period of the game. This is a little less of a problem at beverage stations, which they, unbelievably, on the first night, only staffed with a single individual per station, and issue since corrected (DOH!). Last night, credit card/debit card purchases were impossible. We were told "The system is down". The whole game. Who carries cash any more? I rarely have any cash on me. In today's society there is almost no need any more to carry any cash. Not unless you go to Baxter Arena, I guess. This problem was not limited to just last night, either. My educated guess is that it is, perhaps, somehow related to ongoing internet connection problems in the building. Additionally, I had the gals working a beverage station I was at tell me that the problem at their particular station was that none of the electrical outlets next to their stand, which they needed to use, work. We were told this opening night. Same issue, still, last night, 2 weeks later.

Can you say, long line at the only ATM machine that I have so far been able to locate in the arena?

Because of the narrow concourses, oblivious people standing in small groups, chatting, are causing huge traffic issues getting around the building. Frankly, this is also something I consider something security should put the kibosh on. It is a bad enough problem that they need to adopt some sort of "No Loitering" policy in concourse trafficways. I can't imagine what is going on the minds of people that are doing this, to say nothing of their sheer numbers.

Even though alcohol is served in the building, the lack of beer selection, and the lack of diversity of availability of what you can buy, is crazy. Last night, they pared the list of liquors that are available back to, get this, four!!! No white liquors at all! The disgust exhibited to us by the bartenders at the liquor station about this was hilarious. They were madder about this than we were since they are the ones bearing the brunt of patron anger about this. And, by the way, no wine is served that we can find, something Mrs. Red Cows is militantly upset about, since that is about all she ever has to drink.

I am trying to be patient about all this since this is a new facility and all but things seem to being going downhill and not up and it is all very concerning. Everywhere you go, it seems like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

Facility management should be like going to a musical. You really shouldn't notice the orchestra during the performance. It's just there. If you do, it's because the orchestra sucks.

The bouncy boards remind me of numerous outdoor games with temporary boards. Teams were obviously trying to use the boards for rebounds out front.

Yeah, from the drop of the puck the first night a couple weeks ago it was obvious teams were firing it hard against the board to get an artificial rebound. I'm assuming that will be part of every pre-game strategy visiting teams talk about.

Yup, it was quite apparent, even on opening night, that the boys had already figured out how bouncy the boards are. This even seems to extend to the sideboards as well. Our guys are using them to make bounce passes off of like I have never seen before. My guess is that, just like the bench, penalty box, and team entry location points, so, too, might this have been by design.

Home. Ice. Advantage.

Re: New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Sea

A couple updates about my discourse a few posts back about arena issues.

1. Credit card taking capabilities at concessions were resolved this past weekend.

2. Alcohol availability and variety issues will supposedly be resolved for the next home series with Ohio State per conversation I had with concession personnel near my seats.

3. The cigarette smoke issue may revolve around the fact that my section is apparently right underneath a designated smoking area that apparently exists behind closed doors but is actually inside the arena. I learned this from ushers in my area on Saturday night. I am going to try and take the high road and contact a facility manager about this problem as my section is like being in a bar that allows smoking because of this situation. You can SEE the smoke. If I can't get concrete and immediate assurances this issue will be somehow resolved I would then report this to the Douglas County Health Department and/or the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services:

4. I spoke to the usher in my section, pregame on Saturday night, who told me she had NEVER been instructed to not allow fans into the stands while the puck is in play. She went and found a couple other ushers and asked them about this and they were utterly incredulous that she didn't know this. One of them admonished her "That's one of the most important jobs you have!". She then got a lecture on the protocol of this from them and, at least for that night, problem solved. However, they told me they rotate ushers around (that seems sort of senseless to me) and I guess I run the risk of having someone else just as clueless foisted on our section in the future. Time will tell. When I call the facility manager about the smoke problem you can bet I'll be relating this story, too.

More alcohol variety you say? I am interested in knowing more....

To reiterate, they had only 4 kinds of alcohol available during the last series. None white. They just said that would be rectified, somehow, during the Ohio State series.

Re: New UNO Arena Construction Thread---Facility to open for the start of '15-'16 Sea

UNO re-institutes rush seating at hockey games:

https://twitter.com/omavs/status/669281747935227904

This has not existed since Omaha Civic Auditorium days.

I doubt there will be many instances of tickets being available this way this season. The reason the last game wasn't sold out was because the game was directly against a Husker football game. That might be something of an issue this Friday as the Husker game will probably end shortly before UNO's game starts.
