New UND name to replace Fighting Sioux

Knuckledragging goofer fans still can't tell the difference between a nickname and a mascot. You can keep guessing because you would be wrong. If you went and talked to the Native American population at Standing Rock and Spirit Lake you would have seen that the majority would be in favor of keeping the nickname. Unfortunately in this day and age, vocal minorities some times have more pull than they should.

What I or any other fan base thinks a nickname or a mascot is didn't matter in this case, dId it.

And those two tribes had several opportunities to speak on behalf of the name. And instead of rushing to the defense of the name and UND they chose to let UND twist in the wind.

Which was a smart move.

Why alienate either group when your silence is as good as a vote for non- support, right?

Course, the UND fans weren't smart enough to figure that out on their own.

No, to them, those tribes just didn't get the memo.

Either way, in the end, the silence of those tribes spoke volumes.

At any rate I just find this whole nickname-by-committe thing amusing. And the best part is that UND is going to end up with a nickname nobody is going to be happy with.

If only because decisions by committee are usually bad decisions.

One tribe did speak for the name, however. The other tribe was against it.

Re: New UND name to replace Fighting Sioux

Well, we know how they feel about being used as a mascot, don't we.

I'm guessing they'd appreciate my so-called soap box activities moreso than the UND knuckledraggers efforts to keep it.

You are specifically using them as a soapbox to further your agenda against UND without being part of a solution so no they don't appreciate anything you "guess" is appreciated. What I'm sure Native Americans can appreciate is tArrogance it takes to think you personally are a voice or supporter of their cause.

If my occasion posts on this topic qualify as an agenda against UND then everyone who frequently posts on these threads - about anything - has an agenda.

Including you.

And I don't need to contribute to a solution. The Native Anericans did that all by their capable selves. They obtained the outcome they desired.

Game over.

Of which I applaud and maintain they would appreciate.

You know. The support the "silent minority".

You radical rosemalists from Wobegon are all alike in your hostility toward all real prairie things. Just leave us to our wind, our surround-view horizon, and our hockey. In turn, we will leave you to your goats and your third-ranked hockey program.

UND vs Minnesota tonight. Rivalry renewed!

Oh wait... it's basketball. Carry on.

Re: New UND name to replace Fighting Sioux

This issue is old and over with. The name was retired... the mascot was not as we didn't have one. The one issue you never and I mean never hear of is of all the Native Americans voices that were for nickname that were silenced. The fact remains that in every vote or poll that was given to the members of both tribes turned out overwhelmingly for UND to keep the name. So it begs the question, who gets to decide if it's hostile and abusive? 1 person? A minority of a small tribe in North Dakota? Some white people in Indianapolis?
BTW, UND fans and alumni are usually lumped into some kind of N.A. hater crowd... I was always proud to be a Sioux fan, always will too. I would like someone to point out another school that has done as much as UND for N.A. studies or for the members of the local tribes. Bet you can't.

^ what he said. There are a lot of people that only have the superficial facts and make an opinion based off them or it's just a rival fan trolling UND fans.

More than likely this.

Happens with pretty much every stupid PC type decision now days. No one has a sense of humor anymore...

I am not a smart man (knuckles are always scabbed up), but I THINK you are telling us we should get one person to pick a name rather than, you know... ask around. I gotta say that does make a bunch of good sense. Any chance you think this person could come up with something real snappy like "squirrels" or "voles" or "ground hogs"?
But seriously - you are right. We are going to end up with a bad name - I have little doubt. I just hope its at LEAST a bad name that comes from something that eats meat.

Re: New UND name to replace Fighting Sioux

A rose, by any other name, would smell as sweet.

Re: New UND name to replace Fighting Sioux

Best nick of all time: the Wilmington College "Fighting Quakers".
Miami State screwed the pooch when they dumped "Redskins"--all they had to do was change their mascot to an angry potato, end of issue.

Yes, I mean no, don't let a committee pick it. It'll be something stupid like the Wild, ugh. How about playing on your rich Red River flooding heritage combined with, how did George W. put it, practicing your love of women ( meat eating women ) and call yourselves the North Dakota River Dykes. While your at it, get a squaw, I mean native lady, be your mascot. Teach her to skate and she can dine on Goldy and the like. That all ties in with your Fighting Sioux logo. Well, some of it does.

Sure, ask around.

But do you really need a multi-city nationwide tour?

North Dakota Fighting Dickcissels!

If you're wondering, they are natives, but not the kind that will bring injunctions.

"North Dakota Fighting Dickcissels"?

This sounds like a newspaper headline in North Dakota about some kind of new venereal disease ravaging the state.
