Re: New/Rented Movies: Have Mercy on Michael Bay's Soul, He Knows Not What He Does

This is going to be an interesting summer though...with this, Prometheus and The Dark Knight Rises coming out it might finally be the true Revenge of the Nerds.

And then the geeks get the final woody of the year with the Hobbit coming out in December. As a lifelong Tolkien dork (see: my name <---), I didn't think after Return of the King that I'd ever have another Xmas release movie to get so jacked up over, but here we go again! I've already got the weekend after Thanksgiving blocked off for a viewing of the Trilogy (which I haven't watched in several years).

Definitely want to see Avengers in the theater. Will wait week or two. Haven't seen most of the other Marvel movies as I'm not a comic book guy and wasn't a fan of the Superman, Batman or Spiderman movies that I did see. Want to see this though as it's getting pretty universal good reviews.

Saw the first Ironman and liked it, but mostly because of Downey. Liked Batman Begins, but the second one should have focused on just the Joker (IMHO of course).

Really liked all of the X-men movies. Best comic book movies that I've seen and I'd see more of those.

Finally saw Drive tonight with the fam. Loved it.

Very stylish. The music and long static scenes really sucked me in.

Good modern crime thriller along the lines of the Departed. Not as good as that, but not too far off.

Haven't posted here in a long time, but we went to Avengers yesterday, and the wife walked out saying we would buy it (we tend to buy comic movies despite not being comic book fans - Iron Man, Spider Man, Captain America to name a few). I too thought it was very good, and likely the best of the Marvel movies. I agree with Hulk's reaction to Loki being a highlight moment. The crowd in my theatre (4:30 pm show, which was packed) went nuts!

Dark Knight I felt compelled to buy. I'll buy this one. X-Men 2 is about the only other one that comes close.

I'm looking coward to the next X-Men movie, because it is said that it will focus on Magneto and Michael Fassbender rules. :)

I bought Dark Knight solely because it looks fantastic on Blu-Ray.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Have Mercy on Michael Bay's Soul, He Knows Not What He Does

I havent bought a movie in a long time...I almost never watch them so why waste the money.

I totally forgot about the Hobbit...maybe because I hated the book so much. For all the love I give LOTR I just cannot stand the Hobbit.

So Avengers broke Dark Knights midnight showing record (for comic movies) I wonder if Dark Knight Rises will one up it? (reports have been around for a while that midnight IMAX showings in some areas sold out 2 months ago  )

Well, seeing as I fried the Roku player today and we haven't had cable in a year, DVD's/Blueray's are quite a big deal for us. We buy a few (less than we used to), but will buy movies we know we'll want to watch over and over. Avengers falls in that category for sure.

If you liked the Lord of the Rings movies, you'll probably like the Hobbit movies whether or not you like the book. Jackson is making them in the same tenor as the trilogy and they will feel seamless to the story.

Which The Hobbit wasn't when it was written. He's accomplishing the feat by using information from Unifinished Tales, The Silmarillion, etc. etc. It will be a true prequel to The Lord Of The Rings vs. just a story about how Bilbo happened to have the One Ring of Power (which the ring wasn't until Tolkien decided much later to change it). I personally loved The Hobbit as a book. Even before I understood all the stuff about it.

The Hobbit was the first novel I ever read for pure enjoyment (as opposed to school assignment). My mom bought it for me when I was 10 and I read it in two days. LOVED it.

The trilogy came next, but as a 10 year old was much harder to digest.

I never thought that movies based on the trilogy could even be decent, let alone how great they were. I have a quibble here and there, but overall they so far exceeded my expectations that I was blown away.

I was so afraid they'd be like Conan or Willow, which are fine for campy fantasy, but not up to the level of what the trilogy was.

Not counting gifts, I only buy movies that rise "above and beyond" the standard. Whether it's because of historical significance (Reefer Madness, original Night Of The Living Dead), re-watchability despite quality (Taken, Secondhand Lions), or beyond awesome in everything (Amadeus, Red Cliff, Das Boot, Memento).

I am going to see the Hobbit, I dont need to be convinced of that but I still feel the Hobbit is a pretty lame book. Now to be fair I read it years after I read the LOTR (which I read when I was 13) but it felt like a childrens book whereas LOTR is literature. The difference in writing is night and day in my mind.

Handy,

I thought I explained it below. The Hobbit is a children's book. That's who it was written for. Tolkien had no idea when Bilbo found that ring it was The One Ring of Power. He also had no idea he would write The Lord of the Rings.

He wrote The Hobbit as a children's book. You need to read it as such. My guess is that Jackson will take advantage of everything that was written after The Hobbit to make the transition more seamless.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Have Mercy on Michael Bay's Soul, He Knows Not What He Does

Dude, I know what the Hobbit was, I knew what it was when I read it. What the hell is your point? Ya know why I didnt read it as a child? When we were assigned to in 6th grade I made it about 1/3 of the way through and stopped because of how much I disliked it. It was by sheer chance I gave LOTR a chance months later. By then I was reading books that had way more substance and weight to them it just paled in comparison.

I know my opinion is the minority on it but even grading on a curve I find the book trite and rather worthless. Seeing as the movie is being split in two and is being made by Jackson I am guessing it wont be ;)

Uh, my point was you said it felt like a children's book. My point was, it is supposed to feel like a children's book.

I guess you don't like children's books. I have fond memories of many children's books myself.

Are you one of those people that other adults have to tell small children, "He's not angry, that's just his normal voice?"

I only posted the trailer coz I thought maybe someone might get a kick out of seeing it.

Like the Hobbit or don't like the Hobbit. You get to have your opinion and I can see your point of view. To each their own.

Scooby's right though, it was always intended to be a children's book written for 8-10 year olds. As such, it's really quite good and imaginative considering the time that it was written.

Luckily, Tolkien expounded upon it quite a bit in the LOTR.

My personal favorite though is the Silmarillion which is hard to deal with (for many) on the other end of the spectrum. It's almost too heady and written in older style English.

Taken as a whole - Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, Hobbit, LOTR - what that guy came up with when there was really nothing else like it, was/is astounding.
