Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

We Live In Public

Covers about a decade of internet pioneer Josh Harris (yeah, I never heard of him either), and his internet businesses (mostly having to do with the advancing way people use the 'net). Fascinating, until you realize that he was indeed correct on many accounts of how we do, in fact, "live in public." Then it's friggin' scary.

Maybe it's because it's been so gradual, but basically seeing a 90 minute condensation of his experiements, predictions, results etc from the ol' chat-rooms evolution into live streaming really puts it into perspective. And how the guy didn't go clinically insane from one of his "experiments" amazes me.

And here I am, posting about it on the internet. Go figure.

I recommend that movie, too. The guy at the center of it seems like one of the greatest d-bags of all time.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I watched The Fighter and Winter's Bone last week. Both were excellent.

If there ever was any doubt that Christian Bale deserved the Oscar, it is completely gone after watching that movie, incredible performance. Melissa Leo was also very good, better than I expected her to be. I don't see the ripping on Marky Mark that was going on earlier in this thread. I think he is just fine playing that kind of role, not Oscar worthy, but he didn't drag the film down by any means.

Winter's Bone was also excellent. The movie was scary, it seemed so real and what the characters went through, especially Jennifer Lawrence's character, is so horrible. The scene in the boat with the chainsaw, wow. Hawkes also was great, I had to go back to see if he was nominated for best supporting actor, because I didn't remember that he was. He deserved the nomination, and if it wasn't for Bale's performance, I would have picked Hawkes to take that one home.

So that's why both of them and the third will be, terrible?

First one was an enjoyable popcorn flick. 2nd one was just plodding drivel. So year, 3rd one will suck, too.

Third one should be in the middle. That's the law of trilogies: Good, Bad, Meh.

Just saw Rango. It was amazing, Johnny Depp has to be about the best actor of our time. And the writing was excellent. Go see it.

There's a little treat in it for Scarlet too, if she's interested.

Jackarse 3

I could have done without about 25-30% of this movie (I really don't need to see bodily functions on film), but the parts that don't involve that were pretty good. The Jet Plane was awesome, and the Kris Brown (NFL kicker) and Jared Allen (NFL defensive end) were probably my favorites. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to the last bit in Jackarse 2, as I consider that one of their greatest bits.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Free Encore/Starz/Showtime weekend on Uverse = DVR working overtime. So far I've watched:

How to Train Your Dragon - meh
Sunshine Cleaning - Loved it. More about the people than the business of crime scene cleanup as in The Cleaner
Zack and Miri Make a Porno - Disappointing
Youth in Revolt - Loved it. Even though I can't stand Cera, I like most of his movies.
Black Hawk Down - A very gripping film, even though you know what happens.
Grown Ups - This movie had me cracking up throughout.

Probably two dozen movies yet to watch off of this free weekend. :)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

POST THIS ON FRI!!! Just sayin'. :p
My bad. Apparently it actually started Thursday (I didn't see it until Saturday); runs though Monday. They don't publicize these free weekends very well, that's for sure.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Saw Wall-E over the weekend and really enjoyed - a bit to my surprise. Actually became invested in the characters despite the lack of dialogue. I thought it was really really well done.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Source Code:Interesting concept, what'shisname wasn't bad at all; the very end I could have lived without (considering it undid the entire premise).

Mesrine: I was completely bored after about 45 minutes and it's only Part I.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Insidious

I saw a screening in early March, I know one of the producers. I really like a good horror movie but often walk away disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed Insisious. The lack of gore and elimination of "fake scares" (e.g. when the foreboding music plays it's for a reason) adds to the boding sense of doom. I think that the masses are going to like this movie, it's well done. The haunting concept here is different and it's refreshing. I was scared during the movie and some of the scenes still give me the shivers. It's easier in many ways (for me at least) to dismiss over the top gore versus the buildup of increasingly scary concepts in this film.

Lin Shaye is fantastic and very effective in her role. I thought that Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne were excellent as well. A refreshing take of a classic horror theme.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

True Grit (the old one): I hadn't seen it before, but I saw the new one in theaters. After that I wanted to see this to compare the 2. The original was very good, especially John Wayne, but overall I liked the new one better. I'm not sure why I liked it better, but it just seemed like it told the story better, IMO. I also thought that Haley Steinfeld was better as the girl than the actress in the original, I actually didn't think there was anything special about that performance in the original.

******* 3: Some parts were absolutely hilarious, I couldn't stop laughing, others I had to look away to keep myself from gagging. And as I've always said about *******, WAY TOO MUCH MALE NUDITY.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I'm not going to go to a theater to see it, but I'll probably check out HANNA when it is cheap and easy for me to do so. Mostly because I think it might be entertaining to see Saoirse Ronan destroy people.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Harakiri

Pretty good movie. A ronin that has fallen on very hard times goes to an estate and asks to commit harakiri and die honorably, but of course he has a secret.

Some good twists and turns, and the ending of the movie reflects a theme that really hasn't changed over time. This was my first Japanese movie not directed by Kurosawa, and I liked it very much. The way the story was told was outstanding, and the mind games that went on were decent.

It has a very cool trailer.

It might be entertaining watching a 14 year old girl beat the **** out of people.
