New Collegiate Record for Longest Game

The longest game in collegiate history, both men's or women's, CIS and NCAA, was played this week in a playoff game for the Ontario OUA championship between the women's teams Guelph Gryphons vs Queen's Golden Gaels. Queen's prevailed 2-1 in the 6th overtime at 12:52 AM, after tying the game with 4 seconds left in regulation.

The game took 167 minutes and 14 seconds, second only to an NHL game between Detroit and Montreal in 1936, which went 176 minutes and 30 seconds.

An interesting side note, the game winner for Queen's was scored by Morgan McHaffie, who along with her twin sister and teammate, actually hails from Guelph. The McHaffie sisters are another set of twins who dominate on the scoresheet for their collegiate team--in this case following prolific careers in the PWHL. In earlier action they were also instrumental in a stunning overtime upset of Laurier, the perennial nationally highly-ranked favourites, in the previous playoff round. The twins have a combined 14 points in 5 playoff games.

Queen's will now be the Ontario representative for the CIS championship next weekend.

Kalen Ingram (Harvard '03) is an asst. coach for Queens. Is Kim Pearce still on their staff as well?

Yes, you are right...just checked the Queens women's hockey website. I hadn't realized there was an NCAA connection. For those who might be interested in a "where are they now"....

Ingram (Harvard '03) is enrolled in her second year Queens Law school and is also in her second year as asst coach. According to the site, she is responsible for the defence and special teams.

Pearce (Princeton '07) is in her 4th year as as asst coach there, although she helps out only part-time now for games and practices. She is responsible for video analysis, and scouting in Eastern Ontario. A graduate of Queens Law in 2010, she is currently articling with the Justice Department in Ottawa.

The head coach, Matt Holmberg was named OUA Coach of the Year, and is another grad of Queens Law. (In Canada, coaching is a sideline; even head coaches are not normally full-time paid positions)

Dave--just can't resist mentioning too that Queen's prevailed over Guelph and Laurier's whose goalies both posted better save percentages over the season. ;) Laurier's Knox, a long-time member of the Canada U22 team along with Kessler, had a league leading save percentage of .955 this year.

Sure, I'm sure Queens' fine assistant coaches must've been a factor in helping them triumph despite the goaltending gap. And you have to credit their fine US college coaches for helping to develop them.

Also recall that Kalen scored a last second game tying goal her freshman year against Dartmouth. Possibly that experience helped her in leading Queens who tied this game in similar fashion. That season ended with an ECAC semifinal loss to Dartmouth, but a season that ends that way isn't necessarily a complete coaching failure.
