Never Forget

Re: Never Forget

It's an NFL Sunday, so I'll be wearing a jersey. I don't have a #11, but I do have a couple Jets jerseys (the only NYC/close to it) teams I have (Buffalo is too far away for this intended purpose). I'll be wearing either the Testaverde or the Chrebet.

Re: Never Forget

Wow, thanks, aparch, for preserving that thread. As a yearlong member of this board at that point, that was something. I tell this story every year, I was in Disney World on a college internship at this time, just unreal what went on. A month after my internship started, this happened. When the guy who trained me said that we woud never have to worry about the park closing because Disney never closes, who knew that just a month later we'd have to evacuate the park. It wasn't going to close either, but GWB personally called Michael Eisner and demanded the closure, as apparently there was a list, that had the Magic Kingdom right at the top after WTC, Pentagon, and White House. The plane that went down in PA was indeed heading for the White House. Disney's response for their guests was absolutely incredible. Say what you will about that company, but the experience of working there during 9/11 solidified it for me. In November, Orlando police arrested about 6 people at a hotel just two miles from Disney property, citizens of Saudi Arabia who came here to take flight lessons. Turns out they were members of Al Qaeda. The English, Chinese, French and other foreign guests at Disney all stood with us. One even remarked to me "Our governments may not like each other very much, but as citizens of the world, we are all Americans right now." I thought that was very interesting.

Re: Never Forget

Just went to the memorial for the first time a couple weeks ago when I was in town for a wedding. Incredibly powerful and well done, I thought. I'm not sure I could go there if I had known anyone in the towers or if I suffered from depression or vertigo. The water just continually falling, falling, falling deeper and deeper into the pit. It definitely made an impression on me.

I did the memorial on the first day of my first ever trip to Manhattan. Big mistake. Put a dampener on the rest of the day.

I took a woman I was seeing to the Viet Nam Memorial a few years back (her first trip to it). I go to it every time I am in D.C. and seek out the names of the two young men from the town I (and the aforementioned girlfriend) grew up in. She was overcome with emotion at the enormity of all the names, especially the two from our town. It took a few hours and a lot of other cool stuff for the emotions to move into more positive ones, that's for sure.

It was the museum that got me. I knew it would be rough, and they've got that sign out in front of the main exhibit to warn families, but I didn't expect to basically relive the whole day.

Re: Never Forget

While I will never forget the emotions I felt that day about the tragedy, I do prefer to remember that we all united as one. Black/white, Rep/Dem, didn't matter. We were *ing Americans. I see all the issues going on today, and wish we could get that unity back, without having a tragedy to do it.
