NEPSAC Playoffs 2013

Re: NEPSAC Playoffs 2013

I am glad to see the New England Prep girls getting some attention on this board. My question is with The Gunnery going 15-1 in DII and winning the Championship, (with the only loss to a very strong Southfield team 2-0) why only one girl made second team All-Star. Two forwards on the team #3 and #20 had excellent years. The starting goalie was 10-1 in DII games including 9-1 in DII games against teams that made the playoffs with a GAA 1.25 in those games.

It's a reasonable question. It's not that unusual that the winning team doesn't get much recognition in the all-star team - Last year Proctor had no one on the all star team after winning the championship and Middlesex (who they beat) had three players. Two reasons I can think of:

- One is that the selections happened before the playoffs started so the results of the playoffs weren't known. This is done intentionally so that the coaches pick the best players based on the regular season performance (not everyone makes the playoffs after all) and that 1 or 2 great games in the playoffs don't suddenly make someone an all star after a so-so 20+ game regular season. That is what the tournament MVP is for.

- Sometimes the champions are really the best TEAM. I saw Gunnery play this season three times against different teams and I don't remember a single individual player from the team other than Bagi. I thought they were a very well-coached team (ferocious and organized forecheck) that was much better than the sum of its parts. The forwards were solid but not spectacular and the goalie made the saves she should have but didn't get a lot of shots - based on the games that I saw. Southfield on the other hand had several players that really stuck out when they were on the ice and were memorable. And all stars after all are supposed to be standouts by definition. Doesn't mean the Gunnery girls weren't good (don't know the kids you reference above) - just weren't standouts in their games (some of ot had to do with the team's style of play as well). If I saw that probably the coaches saw that also and that is why the team is as it is.

Re: NEPSAC Playoffs 2013

Looking forward to the New England girls starting up. Does anyone know of teams with big additions for this year? Who looks good? I heard Millbrook may have brought in a couple of really nice players but I don’t know for sure.
