nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

A better question- should they be? Should we rely on companies who must make a profit to save the lives of a large chunk of the world population?

Why is it that we have to make everything we do profitable?

Pay the researchers, for sure. But once it gets beyond that, it should be open to the public for security reasons.

Marxist!

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

Aren't flu vaccines created by private entities? You know, Big Pharma, and corporations in general, the two primary targets on your hit list?

I see. You want to privatize the CDC now. That's a great idea. The one thing that's missing from the CDC right now is a profit motive. If they had that they would be much further along.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

I mean, you can mock that but the flu still is a bigger concern

https://www.livescience.com/new-coronavirus-compare-with-flu.html

We shouldn't be taking the coronavirus lightly though.

The thing is, the effort to prevent this virus from getting fully out is to PREVENT another influenza just getting out into the public. It's bad enough that the influenza is out there and so many people die from it every year. Preventing two totally different viruses from doing the same thing every year is a very important goal.

IMHO, that's where this moron in the white building misses the point.

Once it gets into the full public domain, then the world is relying on yet ANOTHER annual vaccine, hoping that they scientists get the mutation right, again. And another set of debates of the efficacy of those vaccines. And worse, another set of X% of the population that dies every year- in addition to what we have now.

Introducing a profit motive to the health care industry has been so successful. It only makes sense.

Who said anything about privatizing the CDC? You were whining that the CDC couldn't come up with any vaccines because of Trump. I was pointing out that vaccines don't come from the CDC, and aren't created by them.

It's not mocking. Yes, the flu kills more people at this point. That doesn't address the problem. Coronavirus is new. We have no vaccine. We don't know how contagious it is. We don't know what the kill rate is. See the difference?

We shouldn't be taking it lightly?

Well the President of the United States is sure taking it lightly. He gutted all that Obama did during and after Ebola that would have been there to respond and contain new viral threats such as these. He did it with impunity. His press conference was a blatant attempt to bolster the stock market.

There are two things you do NOT CUT in government right now. Cyber security and the CDC. You don't do it. Period. He slashed them both.

Ya I wasn't defending Trump. I am rolling with the CDC 100 times out of 100 over what Trump says. I was just pointing out the comparison to flu is legitimate.

Don't panic.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Thursday that the government would ask all elementary, junior high and high schools to close from March 2 until spring break, typically around the end of March.

No biggie since the Japanese don't put particular social emphasis on education.

Report now that a Wuhan woman visited a family in China and infected all of them, while never getting sick herself. Really interesting

Most insurance companies pay for a flu vaccine. Why wouldn't they pay for a coronavirus vaccine?

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

Corona beer sales are dropping. Seriously.

That's how stupid people are.

Um. Donald Trump is President of the United States.

We really need to do this with fire departments.

"Thank you for calling Acme Fire Control. Your house is on fire? Oh dear. My computer tells me you didn't pay for the upgrade. Sorry. But we'll be right out to make sure it doesn't spread to your neighbor's house. They paid premium."

There are always going to be people naturally immune to certain viruses. That's why it's going to be near impossible to contain. People like that will get through any medical symptom check.

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

I'm still floored that we had a privatize the CDC post today. And they say I'm hyperbolic? Wow.

I know, I’m just an epi geek and find these actual reports really fascinating. I think they’ll keep coming

Re: nCoV 2019-2020 Outbreak

Um. Donald Trump is President of the United States.

Oh, I know. I'm just piling on.

I've always had the philosophy, "There is no hope for Mankind." (I guess I should say Humankind...)

People ask me if I believe that because of all the evil in the world. I say, "No. I actually believe good will always overcome evil in the long run. I believe it because people are stupid. And that will ultimately be the downfall of Humankind."
