NCHC: The Most Elite Conference in the Country

Re: NCHC: The Most Elite Conference in the Country

Indeed it will be. Perhaps Wisconsin's attendence numbers are way down because of their 10th place finish. That just might tweak the results.
That and no one shows up to OSU games, and Michigan and Michigan State have glorified high school arenas.

Re: NCHC: The Most Elite Conference in the Country

If RIT's rink wasn't so small in capacity (heck, they sold out RPI-RIT this past year during the quarter break, which was the day after USA thanksgiving), you wouldn't be able to say that. ;)

I bet if they played all their home games at BCA, they could give yioux a run for your money.

The problem with that theory is that North Dakota could likely also sell another 3-4k seats for most games. If the Ralph had been built to hold 15k (what Ralph originally wanted before being talked out of it) North Dakota would have likely drawn over 300k this season.

Re: NCHC: The Most Elite Conference in the Country

How can the NCHC be elite when they are all envious of Minnesota? Sorry, wrong thread. :)

Wisconsin has the best college environment in hockey. Student section is the best.

Normally yes, though they did suck for the Duluth series this year. I was really disappointed, but guessing Christmas break was a big factor as they were better two months later for the St. Cloud series

Wrong, Ralph Engelstad Arena is a much better atmosphere and louder. The Kohl Center is an oversized basketball arena. Wisconsin may have a better student section but that's the only thing Wisconsin has on UND hockey games.

Here's two videos I found of the Ralph. Tell me there isn't an amazing atmosphere there.

Holy Christ are you wrong. The Ralph is more like Mariucci than the Kohl

Re: NCHC: The Most Elite Conference in the Country

North Dakota (249,501) had more fans go to their games than the combined attendance of Atlantic Hockey (214,114). That is interesting.

Attendance for NCHC teams: 998,661 (124,833 average/team)
Attendance for B1G teams: 734,327 (146,865 average/team)
Attendance for WCHA teams: 452,611 (50,290 average/team)

It will be interesting to see how those numbers change following next season.

A sidenote: when GLM visited here for the F5 (noted NBC blogger and easterner), he mentioned that the Thu night play-in game (this was before the WCHA was 12 teams) brought more attendance than the entire EZAC tourney.

Oh please, the Marry-Loser-Uchi is not in contention for best atmosphere. Between its corporate crowd and 80 year's, its pretty pathetic.

Ranking the WCHA by atmosphere:
1) Ralph Engelstad Arena
2) Kohl Center
3) National Hockey Center
4) Amsoil Arena

Yes, Holy Cross has played in Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Having been to the Ralph and the NCC in the past year or so, they are just like any other "major" school's arena. Crowd needs to be prompted to cheer. Amsoil is included in there, by a hair. The best atmosphere has been MTU so far. Their fans don't shut up. Ever.

In terms of atmosphere

Kohl > Ralph
NHC > Ralph

There is NOTHING else to do in North Dakota but go to College Hockey games.

And people wonder why our tournament wasn't on TV :(

Put the F5 in Louisville KY, and you'd probably see the same thing.

It will be interesting to see how those numbers change following next season.
NCHC arena's average capacity nightly attendance: 7,587
B1G arena's average capacity nightly attendance: 10,257
WCHA arena's average capacity nightly attendance: 4,357

Figure your average numbers divided by 18 home games (a good approximate average) and we get:
NCHC 124,833 / 18 = 6,935 ... now divide by capacity average ... 6,935 / 7,587 = 91.5%
B1G 146,865 / 18 = 8,159 ... now divide by capacity average ... 8,159 / 10,257 = 79.5%
WCHA 50,290 / 18 = 2,793 ... now divide by capacity average ... 2,793 / 4,357 = 65.0%

I don't think they'll change much.

Re: NCHC: The Most Elite Conference in the Country

Do the Michigans plan on expanding at any point after the realignment? Hopefully OSU can improve their terrible numbers if more casual fans come for "exciting Big Ten matchups".

Re: NCHC: The Most Elite Conference in the Country

The predicted magnificence of the NCHC conference and its venues along with the proclaimed grandeur of WCHA venues [see above] indicate disaster for H.E and ECAC interest and attendance. Those poor, sad college hockey programs and rinks in the Boston area as well as those in hick towns in New York, Maine, New Hampshire, etc. can't compete with the splendor of NCHC/WCHA venues or the dedication of their fans. This will surely cause the collapse of H.E. and the ECAC and force BC. to join the NCHC, greatly increasing the odds that new conference will have a championship team. You read it first here.
