NCAA Tournament Selection and Seeding

D2D

Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey
Lots of controversy over The Committee's tournament selections and seedings. If you were in charge what changes would you have made?

Here's mine:

1. Northeastern
8. Robert Morris

5. Minnesota
4. Colgate

3. Ohio State
6. Minnesota Duluth

7. Penn State
2. Wisconsin

Under this scenario, BC and Providence would not be in. Minnesota and Penn State would.

I think it's pretty telling that it's Monday morning and USCHO.com still doesn't have an article about the NCAA bracket. They couldn't find one women's writer willing to stay up last night to write an article? I'll be someone's up to write the men's article when their bracket is announced...

What they should do is an investigative article on how some teams for screwed while some teams with coaches on the panel got awarded a spot.

It would have been nice if they had done anything, but the article you described will be up on the men's side before the selection show goes off the air. Especially if the selections are even remotely as controversial as the women's selections....

There’s a bunch of articles out there on SB Nation sites basically calling this what it is. Title IX has a spot on article posted too. A Minnesota paper, published some diplomatic comments from Frost. Media should ask King and Flanagan specifically how this happened. It sours being a women’s hockey fan. It’s ridiculous that it really does resemble a WWE production. It looks especially bad on Katie King.

COUGH COUGH COUGH. Harkens me back to the years in the smoked filled rooms that decided the men's tournament selections and seedings.

Too bad the committee ruined their own tournament and its validity. You have PSU who was higher in USCHO polls, pairwise, RPI, USA today/USA Hockey poll and a better record than BC and yet BC gets in because their coach is on the panel. By what reasoning does the committee award BC over PSU? Why bother with records/polls/pairwise, RPI if they arent even being used. PSU got screwed.

Nevermind Minnesota being left out... Great job committee how to ruin a tournament.

It would have been easy this year with Covid just go by winning percentage.
That being said Penn State controlled their own destiny their inexperience showed. They played no to lose instead of to win for two periods.

If Minnesota had won the WCHA tournament this weekend, would we be sitting here this morning baffled by Ohio State not getting in?

I honestly am not sure we wouldn't be.

I mean, if the argument for Duluth is "Hey, they finished a close second in the regular season standings, just a few minutes away from finishing first... and we can't have four WCHA teams...."

Awww the resident BU troll is upset BC got in! Don't worry, they will bow out against Ohio State. The decisions across conferences are tougher to make...that should be expected. You don't simply compare RPI of PSU to BC in a COVID year with no non conference games.

With that said, what is the argument for UMD over Minnesota?

BC fan boy, I don't care a lick about BC getting in - I care about the game of college hockey and whats fair. Explain how PSU who had a better record, higher USCHO polls, pairwise, RPI, USA today/USA Hockey poll and a better record than BC yet are sitting on the sidelines? There is not metric that shows BC should be in over PSU - NONE. Factor in the BC coach IS ON THE COMMITTEE and if you can't see an issue with that you are an idiot (then again that wouldn't surprise me). PC doesn't belong in either. Minnesotas record was iffy. Their rankings were high but they were on the fence anyways. PSU got screwed worse - how you go 16-2-2 and miss the NCAA is a joke. UMD and BC both got in since they both had a selection representative. Nothing more.

Let’s look at CHA vs Providence for last few years:

19-20: Prov played Penn State twice. Providence went 0-1-1.

18-19: Prov played Penn State 2x. They went 1-1. The Prov win was in OT.

17-18: Prov played Cuse twice. They went 1-1. The Prov win was in OT.

16-17: Prov played RMU at Prov. RMU swept the series.
Prov also swept RIT on the road that year.

This idea that Providence is more deserving than Penn State is ridiculous.

You want to talk about things that are bad for women’s hockey? The false narrative that the CHA is so much worse than the balance of the country is bad for women’s Hockey. The reasons people come up with to dump on the athletes in this conference. It’s shameful.

You simply don't get it. There is a reason they aren't using PWR or even winning percentage when comparing teams from different conferences. It has been stated numerous times. If someone thinks Penn State is a better team that's fine. But falling back on the PWR without non conference games or winning percentage when comparing teams from different conferences is dumb.

So they arent using:
USA Hockey rankings
USA Today rankings
USCHO rankings
Team records
RPI
Pairwise

Makes total sense. Just pick teams that are on the committee. Cool.

I give up. Maybe someone else can try to explain to you the difficulty of comparing teams across conferences without any non league games.

NAME SOMETHING THEY CAN USE THEN? They tossed out 3 POLLS (by a wide variety of voters), PAIRWISE, KRACH, TEAM RECORD, RPI and just went off on their own opinions? Name one metric they can use? Sounds legit.
