NCAA selection show

I've counted five "Ohio"s so far. Buckeye fans will not be happy. :-)

Also, the graphic said seeding was based on NPI; it did not say "Pairwise", that I saw.

As long as they don't say that gosche "The" in front of it.

I'm starting to believe it's time for us old people to completely let go of both of these "issues." The current students don't seem to be the slightest bit concerned. As our Friend from SCSU pointed out, Raygun Kirk even wears "Ohio" on her pads.

As for "THE" Ohio State University: I was new to OSU in the late '80's when that marketing gambit debuted. We mocked it relentlessly. Everything outsiders said about it, we said first. Now, my response is basically a weak smile, and a little disbelief that the University actually got away with this.

Almost 40 years have gone by. The kids are more than alright; they're simply right. As my daughter would put it, time to "chillax." (chill and relax)

I wonder how Penn feels about playing St. Lawrence at Wisconsin? I wonder how Bemidji, St. Cloud and Minnesota feel about not making the NCAA Tournament.

Both UMN and Duluth made the tournament? do you mean Minnesota State (aka Mankato)?

Of those three, St Cloud is the only one who has anything to be upset about.

Bemidji (god bless 'em) won 3 games total.

OK, I see what you did there. Have to admit it was clever.

But as I sit here tonight, Raygun's response still seems healthier to me.

I'm sure he meant Minnesota State.
On a side note I'm looking forward to seeing when St.Thomas gets their new arena if it elevates their program or recruiting.

I’m sorry my previous comment went over people’s head. I was making a point by dropping “State” from 4 school’s names but especially in 2 schools it makes a difference. Penn State became Penn and Minnesota State became Minnesota.

How is Raygun’s pads saying “Ohio” in one spot a response to sports announcers calling Ohio State “Ohio”? Her jersey says Ohio State so is that a different response by Raygun?

Ohio State using “The” is nothing like sports announcers calling Ohio State “Ohio”. Ohio State deserved/deserves to be mocked for “The”. In starting Celly Club we wanted to use “The Celly Club” and we were told we couldn’t use “The”. I found that laughable.

Ohio State has always been Ohio State, not Ohio. Ohio has always been Ohio University.

Would the announcers call Penn State “Penn”?
Would the announcers call Minnesota State “Minnesota”?
Michigan State “Michigan”?
Iowa State “Iowa?
Indiana State “Indiana “?
Oregon State “Oregon”?
Arizona State “Arizona “?
Oklahoma State “Oklahoma ”?
Washington State “Washington “?
Florida State ‘Florida “?

The list goes on. And the answer to every question is no the announcers wouldn’t do that.

My guess is the sports announcers are just ignorant that Ohio University is “Ohio”. But if they call every other state university by its proper name they should do the same for Ohio State. If they had any professional integrity this wouldn’t be a question.

This is my opinion. My dad graduated from Ohio State in 1950. I was born in University Hospital in the mid 1950s. I have 3 degrees from Ohio State, and 1 degree from a different “State” university which sports announcers always get the name correct. I have a daughter with a degree from Ohio State. Our family is proud of Ohio State and our family’s association with Ohio State. Do we agree with everything about Ohio State? Not at all. Excluding the trolls, it doesn’t take much effort to call Ohio State by the proper name.

It didn't go over my head. Caught your reference; thought it was clever, and said so.

I'm not familiar with the "spot." I was referring to the leg pads Raygun wore (at least on) Saturday. Each had a Script Ohio on the top, above the knee.

My honest reaction was to appreciate Raygun for the fresh approach. We do represent the State of Ohio as the flagship research university. Let's just embrace it.

Of course you're 1000% correct on the school name. And about the name of the MAC School in Athens. As for "THE," the substance is different. With "THE," you could say we asked for the flak. But in this context, both serve as vehicles for rivals to take dopey little digs at the teams we both root for. My question is how to respond, if it all.

And the answer to every question is no the announcers wouldn’t do that.
No they would not. Except when one wants to troll us by engaging in Michigan speak. As has happened at two consecutive Final Face-Offs.

My guess is the sports announcers are just ignorant that Ohio University is “Ohio”. But if they call every other state university by its proper name they should do the same for Ohio State. If they had any professional integrity this wouldn’t be a question.
Guess again. That was my exact opinion a year ago. Especially the professional integrity part. So I posted a soft sell, educational response. Guess you weren't present for that. Anyhow, I was shocked by the intensely negative reaction. Posters united behind the trolling. And hated my guts for daring to suggest there was an issue.

Your OSU roots run deeper than mine, but I also have roots here. With spouse, daughter, degrees and paychecks.

If you let it, the disrespect annoys a bit. It hurts a bit. I get it. But when someone decides to troll, they're conveying that they are completely indifferent to accuracy, and completely indifferent to fairness. Responding to them with "education" proves to be useless.

Or, maybe I'm just old and tired. But after decades of the dopey digs -- digs now coming at us over the airwaves -- the whole thing is just so tedious. Simply embracing the Stadium Name, the TBDBITL Band Formation & Raygun's Leg Pads seems like progress to me.

Chiming in as someone who’s not a Buckeye fan by any stretch to say that it was very jarring to hear the announcers saying just “Ohio” instead of “Ohio State”. I wasn’t thinking about it as them being deliberately disrespectful, but certainly unprofessional. When talking about anything associated with the school, the two words are completely inseparable in my mind. Saying just “Ohio” makes as much sense to me as saying “Minnes” or “Clark” when talking about Minnesota or Clarkson. I hope someone brings this issue up to the announcers for future games so they can get it right.

I know you Buckeye fans are getting a little ganged up on here, so I wanted to put out a positive word for you. I have huge respect for your team and your coach, and wish them a great tournament (except for if they play Wisconsin!).

I don't think calling OSU "Ohio" is disrespectful -- I just think it's incorrect. You can't call BC "Boston". It just doesn't work.

Maybe it comes from the perspective of someone who follows other sports that Ohio University plays in.

Unrelated to the other topic -- I was sad to see that Stonehill didn't get to have their cheers from being selected included in the broadcast! Just bad timing that when they cut to the Stonehill selection show watch that they hadn't gotten to their spot in the bracket yet.

In the context of the selection show, where it is utterly obvious who they're talking about, I don't really see a problem at all.

Welcome to the Board, Huffpluff! Appreciate your support on this question.

I like to think the best of people. But after this year's on-air comments, it's clear there's no desire to "get it right." Which is puzzling. Unless I've been seriously misinformed, the Final Face-Off broadcast is supposed to be neutral, with all eight fan bases welcome. But now for at least two years, the issue has arisen. Don't know if the Selection Show has that same history, but that wouldn't change things either way.

I'm no mind reader. Can't know with certainty the motive of those who "get it wrong." Maybe it's an attempt to be playful. Maybe it's "you're not the boss of me."

Regardless, my attitude has shifted to:
1. Embrace Ohio; and
2. Don't Feed The Trolls.

But for better or worse, my fellow Buckeye Bkruczynski deserved a response. As did you. So regrettably we're doing some additional feeding.

I agree 100%. It's Ohio Sate. Not Ohio.
