NCAA Division III Membership Committee Recommends SUNY Canton for Provisional Status

Re: NCAA Division III Membership Committee Recommends SUNY Canton for Provisional Sta

There is also a rumor that Morrisville was allowed to play in the SUNYAC playoffs in 2010 because Genesseo and Buffalo State were not allowed to because of NCAA infractions. They did not compete in the SUNYACS in 08-09.

The news that they were eligible did come out at roughly the same time, but they were unrelated. Morrisville had applied for the 1-year waiver with the NCAA, but were not informed of the decision (approval of the waiver) until shortly after the Buff State/Geneseo debacle. The only reason they couldn't participate in the SUNYAC Playoffs beforehand was that they were not eligible for the NCAA tournament, and were they to win the SUNYAC Championship, the conference wouldn't be able to just say "well... give the AQ to the runner-up". Had they won the SUNYAC before being eligible, the conference would have lost its AQ for that year, effectively. Thus, once the NCAA said they were eligible for the national tournament, they were eligible for the SUNYAC tournament.

It's the same reason the DII teams can't play in the ECAC-E tournament. It's the same reason RIT couldn't play in the Atlantic Hockey tournament their first year, despite the fact that they won the regular season title in that year (2006/2007), because they were still in their provisional phase of playing up. Conversely, RIT's women's team will be eligible for the CHA playoffs in their first year of DI hockey because the CHA is only just reaching the required number for an AQ (6 in DI hockey), so will not have an AQ for 2 years. Were Canton to become the 7th member of the ECAC-W, they would likely be eligible for the conference tournament for the same reason the RIT women are eligible.

Re: NCAA Division III Membership Committee Recommends SUNY Canton for Provisional Sta

Also Morrisville did get 1 year waived of provisional and were able to move to Active membership in three years so 06-07, 07-08, 08-09

They got the year waiver for going through the exploratory year, which I believe Canton just completed. The NCAA can waive one year of provisional for schools that went through the exploratory year and were deemed to have accomplished the goals of transition to active membership through exploratory + 3 years of provisional. I think that most schools who go through an exploratory year are given this waiver. Also, teams in the last two years of provisional membership do count in the primary criteria for tournament selection. That's why the SUNYAC let Morrisville in after two years of Provisional - during the first two years games with MoVille would have been like ECAC East games with the Saints.

In other words, Canton is going to have to wait a while to join the SUNYAC. Seems like it makes the ECAC West more attractive

Re: NCAA Division III Membership Committee Recommends SUNY Canton for Provisional Sta

Heard a rumor today that Canton is joining the WIAC !

They inquired but the WIAC was too afraid the former Ag Tech would steal their CHEESE secrets!!! :p
