NCAA Division III hockey at Michigan Stadium ....press release

Re: NCAA Division III hockey at Michigan Stadium ....press release

Love the idea, but gotta agree here, why not get a better opponet, I am sure there are a few better teams out that way???????

I'm surprised a smart guy like you wouldn't be able to figure that there was no window of opportunity.

Re: NCAA Division III hockey at Michigan Stadium ....press release

When was the last time Adrian played a top 10 team? I wonder if this was a last minute thing where they couldn't get a team like St. Norbert's to come down because the schedule was already in place.

Re: NCAA Division III hockey at Michigan Stadium ....press release

Agreed - its a great thing for the two teams playing - just don't position it as a great thing for D3 hockey...that's all I'm sayin'

Last March?? :)

You're limited to 25 games and schedules are pretty well set. If this was a last minute idea, only a conference game would fit.

And only the one that was scheduled on the weekend that the ice was available. It's pretty cool... (so to speak)

Re: NCAA Division III hockey at Michigan Stadium ....press release

My buddy played a men's league game at Wrigley the day after (may have been the day before) the Blackhawks game a few years ago. He said it was an absolutely unforgettable event. I am not sure this game will do anything for DIII hockey in general, but it is certainly an opportunity for both teams and their fan bases to do something special.

-Going to the BigHouse to watch a college football game would be awesome.
-Being able to go down on the field would be even better.
-Watching a hockey game in the BigHouse better than that.
-Playing a hockey game in the BigHouse tops them all.

Best of luck to both teams, I hope the weather works out for them.

Great post 93GL. You get it !
In general I can only see an upside from exposing DIII hockey in a area that has 1 team.

Re: NCAA Division III hockey at Michigan Stadium ....press release

Given the nature of the timing of the release and venue change, isn't it obvious that this is something that came up out of the blue and was taken advantage of?

"Hmmm, we can play there Dec. 4? That's awesome. Oh wait, we just have a league game against CUW that day ... um, no thanks, we'll pass."

Wake up to what it is ... a great chance for a DIII game to get some publicity. Will it be empty-looking? Of course. Even a home sellout at Adrian is what, 1500 fans? Same thing would happen if SNC would play at Lambeau. But that wouldn't get spun that way because "it's Adrian and they must be up to something".

Get over it and enjoy the game and let the kids have a memory they will never forget.
Props to Ron Fogarty for getting it done.

"Get a better opponent." Half of this thread is idiots with keyboards.

Great event.

smart guy??? now thats the first time I've heard that lol......There is no way they couldn't have played an exhibition game against another opponent?? Just dont want to see a team get blown out on the BIG STAGE.......

Re: NCAA Division III hockey at Michigan Stadium ....press release

You get one exhibition game per year. Adrian will have theirs in a roughly 2 1/2 weeks with the Czech national team coming in. In order to schedule another MCHA opponent more games around the conference would have to be moved around. It's not nearly as easy as you think.

The part that raises my attention is the fact that these two teams are going to play at 7 PM on Friday night, and then turn around and play at 9:30 the next morning. I suspect that Concordia will feel the effects of this more than Adrian will.

Can't play an ex game against a DIII team - It counts against your 25. Get a Canadian team to come in at the last minute? unlikely - then what do you do with the game you already had scheduled on that date. They had a chance - they acted. Give them credit.

Re: NCAA Division III hockey at Michigan Stadium ....press release

This is an awesome opportunity for both Adrian and Concordia. I heard that this opportunity was a last minute thing and I am sure that if this would have been available during the Thanksgiving tourney they would have jumped at it as well. This will be something that all the players, coaches and fans will remember for a long time. Just because of the oppponet that Adrian is facing doesnt mean that it is not a good thing for DIII hockey. Yeah its unfortunate that this could not be a more entertaining game given the past between the two teams, but its a historic event, not another PR event put on by Adrian.

I have been involved with hockey most of my life and when our local rink was outdoors I enjoyed playing, being able to play at the Big House would be a dream come true!

Re: NCAA Division III hockey at Michigan Stadium ....press release

We could make it a PR stunt if we wanted. We could shoot a midget out of a cannon after every goal, but we'd bankrupt Barnum and Bailey's about halfway through the 2nd period.

True that, you would think that Concordia would be better off asking Adrian to play their friday night game on Sunday. That way they can come in on Friday for a chance to skate around the Big House a bit, be well rested for Saturday Morning, and have a chance to rest up Saturday night, then play adrian Sunday afternoon perhaps, and then head back to Wisconsin.

Re: NCAA Division III hockey at Michigan Stadium ....press release

Keep in mind, that's right around Finals week as well, and that isn't exactly a quick bus trip back home to be making on a Sunday. I don't think I'd want to roll in around 5-6 AM and then have an 8 AM Monday morning final, if that's the case.

To elaborate: can't play an exhibition game against anybody who plays at least half of their schedule against DIII Opponents, which also rules out the DIIs. :)

To elaborate the elaboration: you can agree that the game is an exhibition game (as Norwich did against Curry a few years back), but if it is against any of the above, the game counts against your quota of on-ice appearances which is 25.
