National Semi-Final: Boston College vs Union College

Re: National Semi-Final: Boston College vs Union College

You've got that backwards... the higher seed (or, home team) is always named 2nd... so, it should be, Union vs Boston College. ;)

This game will be a war. BC won in Tampa in 2012, Union smoked BC, 5-1 last season in the Providence Regional. I'm sure that one has not been forgotten by either team.

I'm not sure if you meant it, but just to clarify...BC did win the title in 2012, but they didn't play Union along the way. Union lost to Ferris St in the semis, while BC beat Minnesota.

Regardless, I have no doubt that Union's shellacking of BC in the first round last year won't be lost on Jerry York or the players. This will be a tough one for Union to win, IMO.

Re: National Semi-Final: Boston College vs Union College

UML looked like a much better offensive/attacking team than i had expected or seen before.

Re: National Semi-Final: Boston College vs Union College

Shame on me, but I really don't follow BC that closely, just what I pick up here and there. How does this team differ from the one that Union faced last year? This season seemed much more "BC" like than last.

Re: National Semi-Final: Boston College vs Union College

Think the biggest difference between this year and last year is depth across the board.

By the time BC was prison raped by BU and subsequently you guys it was hardly a BC team that we've become accustomed to.

Obvoiusly the first line is on another level right now but the secondary scoring is there as well. The 2nd line has 3 players between 10-14 goals each and 26-29 points. By the end of last year there were only 4 forwards playing who had more than 15 points.

One thing I pointed out last week is that this is a very young team both age wise and experience wise. Clearly they're young age wise, since for the 3218047132nd season in a row they're the youngest team in college hockey but young players are in big spots. If you ranked defensemen in terms of TOI it would be some variation of FR, FR, SO (Santini/McCoshen/Matheson). Throw on top of that the youngest player in college hockey between the pipes.

This isn't a juggernaut BC team necessarily, they have flaws like everyone else, but you have to understand last year's BC team was the worst BC team in 15 years (yes really). By the end of the season it was horrendous and they drew the only team in the QFs they could have beaten with Vermont, then they got jacked up by a bad BU squad in the Garden and smoked by Union. Ugly.

Last year vs Union they had Hayes out with an injury and had Danny Linell on a line with Gaudreau which blew the Hobey for him. Linell has since been relegated to the stands since the HE QFs. Hayes is back in full force. BC probably upgraded in net (Milner was terrible in that game last year) and has massively upgraded on defense with the freshman class. BC also added size and skill up front with Calnan and Gilmour and also smaller skilled guys like Cangelosi and Fitzgerald.

Basically last year's team had no identity and was small and lacked any punch by the end of the season. This year's team is much tougher and nastier and bigger, and they do have some skill on lines 2-4 but a lot of them are together fending for themselves with the big guns all loaded up on line 1.

Ah yes... Now I remember. BC just barely squeaked by some very awesome team from the west.

Re: National Semi-Final: Boston College vs Union College

This thread is weak. In an attempt to catch up with the other Semifinal thread....

1. What are your program's TV ratings?
2. How much money does your program make from your TV ratings?
3. How many national championships has your program won prior to NCAA championships? I'm not sure, but I think this is between the years 1929 A.D. and 1940 A.D. Bonus points if your team won a title Before Christ, i.e., B.C. Oh, looky there... BC wins lots and lots.
4. How many banners has your program hung from the rafters from pre-NCAA championships?

Dang, I love being the instigator. This thread is gonna be a battlefield! :p

Last year Jerry broke up arguably the nations best line.
This year he put another one together and hasn't broken it up.
That is all. ;)

Not sure about BC, but Minnesota started playing hockey in 1922-23.

Re: National Semi-Final: Boston College vs Union College

This should be a great game, btw. Don't really care who wins, really, both teams would be an interesting matchup with either Minny or UND. Either it will be a matchup of blue-blood programs each with at least a handful of Nattys going in, or it will be the old guard vs the newbie. Guess I'd say I lean 51/49 in favor of Union, just because Minny went 1-0-1 vs BC already this season, so we already have bragging rights over them, but have not yet faced Union to my memory? But I'd be happy with either, since UMn vs BC would just be an absolute instant classic clash of the titans. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not writing off UND, but I'm not a UND fan, so I won't care so much if UMn loses to UND. Great matchups for both games actually, should make for a great weekend of hockey.

Re: National Semi-Final: Boston College vs Union College

you wouldn't want a chance to beat bc in a game that actually matters after what happened in tampa? those are the only bragging rights that matter.

It's all about when you win my friend. Minnesota breaks out the can of whoop azz against BC in October and December. March and April... not so much.

Sat 03/29/08 vs. Minnesota NCAA Northeast Regional Semifinal (Worcester, MA) BC W 5-2
Thu 04/05/12 vs. Minnesota NCAA Frozen Four Semifinal (Tampa, FL) TV-ESPN2 BC W 6-1

Sun 12/30/12 at Minnesota Mariucci Classic TV-FSN+,NESN BC MINN WIN 8-1
Fri 10/25/13 at Minnesota Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge TV-BTN T 3-3 OT… BC wins SO 2-1
Sun 10/27/13 at Minnesota BiG Ten/Hockey East Challenge TV-FSN MINN WIN 6-1

BTW... the winner of the BC/UNION game will be the 2014 National Champion. That's the way I see it, although I'm hoping for an interesting matchup from the west. ;)

I don't give a rats *** about Tampa, just like the Gopher's apparently didn't give a rats *** about Holy Cross or Yale either when they steamrolled RM and SCSU.

Sorry to say it, but its probably a good thing for BC/Union that there is a full 2 weeks before the Frozen Four, because that might give Minny time to cool off. Because if either team had played Minny yesterday, they would have lost. UMn couldn't do anything wrong. They are on fire right now. Not saying they will be in 2 weeks, but that's why they play the games, right?!

You are showing 2 examples as if they are the rule?! lol

I could find you 90 examples of Union NEVER making a Frozen Four. Seems those 90 previous failures didn't stop them from making 2 of the last 3.

The biggest of big stages has a strange affect on some folks. Just sayin'. ;)

Why don't you go back in recent history and find more than those 2 examples spanky. Hint: don't waste your time.

You could not find 90 examples of Union. How long has Union been in D-1?
