NAHA Labor Day Weekend Tournament

Re: NAHA Labor Day Weekend Tournament

32 Teams there this year, should have a ton of talent. Burlington is a great city was there for Worlds. 4 teams from Minny, odds are one of them should be in the finals.

Who's going? This years tourney has the makings to be one of the best ever. Once again, pretty much all the D1 schools will be watching as well.

Odds would be better if they hadn't placed two of the teams in the same Division!

I don't understand - with all Minny girls on these teams, shouldn't these be the 4 semi-finalists? No one else can compete, right? :)

From Minny and think our teams will have thier hands full. Many very good teams from everywhere. Should be great competition as always. Best of luck to all!

Agreed. It doesn't help when so many of the top players chose not (or could not) participate in the tourney. For example, only two of the eight Minnesota kids on the USA U18 team will be there.

Re: NAHA Labor Day Weekend Tournament

Did we load up a couple of teams or are the Minny teams evened out?

I think the attitude among many Minnesota kids is that this is a great tournament to be exposed to college coaches. Most top players heading into their senior year have already committed; probably a few juniors too. If they've commited, or are close to committing, they stay home. Not sure if this the norm for teams across the USA and Canada, but it definitely is the norm for Minnesota players, at least this year and last year.

Well you said it, not me :roll eyes: But seriously, I guess there is some very good talent at this tournament. I'm hoping for updates during the weekend.

Re: NAHA Labor Day Weekend Tournament

The Boston Shamrocks stopping on the way to the Green Mountains for a warm up game at the Rinks at Exeter (11am, today - Thursday), against the Pacific Steelers for those in the Exeter, NH area.

To many teams in my opinion, not enough strong teams to maintian the qualtiy this event was known for. Looks like it is more of a money maker than a quality event where every game is competative.

anything having to do with a poor brand of hockey probably begins with the fact that these teams are playing 6 games in 36 hours

Re: NAHA Labor Day Weekend Tournament

There seems to be quite a few blowouts. Also haven't heard of a lot of the teams attending (especially in the U16).

Re: NAHA Labor Day Weekend Tournament

Assuming they kept the game formats the same they are pretty short games. That was part of the appeal short highly competitive games meant the teams had to be ready to play when the puck dropped. The scouts really like the level of competitiveness which seems to be absent with this expanded volume of teams.

Re: NAHA Labor Day Weekend Tournament

I guess old Bill and Jessie are looking to cash in....32 teams? Pretty much says "cash grab" to me. But pays a lot of bills...I guess the move to Jay and then back to Stowe [nice planning there, fellas] was expensive...

Re: NAHA Labor Day Weekend Tournament

I don't disagree that a smaller tournament could be more competitive both directly through selection of teams and indirectly through a more reasonable game schedule, however which of the teams that have been "blown out" should be left at home?

Here's the teams that have lost games by 3+ goals this weekend (didn't differentiate between the two WhiteCaps teams):

NEWHL (9-0 Assabet), (9-1 Kitchener), (5-2 Ottawa)
Pride (5-0 WhiteCaps), (5-1 Sudbury), (3-0 NEWHL), (3-0 Buffalo), (4-1 Pitt Seals)
Spitfires (4-1 Polar Bears)
Kitchener (6-2 Buffalo), (5-1 WhiteCaps)
Wizards (4-0 Honeybaked)
Balmoral Hall (4-1 Nepean), (6-0 NAHA)
CO Select (4-1 WCanada)
North Bay (6-0 Mission), (5-1 WhiteCaps)
Little Caesars (4-0 WhiteCaps)
Stoney Creek (4-1 NAHA)
Breakers (6-1 NSA)
Sudbury (3-0 Wizards)
WhiteCaps (4-0 Assabet)
IceCats (5-1 Stoney Creek)
NSA (5-1 WhiteCaps)
W. Canada (5-1 Ice Cats)
Pens Elite (4-0 NAHA)

So in all, that is 17/32 teams in the U19 that lost at least 1 game by 3 goals or more thru end of day 2. In all there were 26 of these "blowout" games.

So who should stay home? You can easily make a case for NEWHL, but after that? Probably can make a good case for North Bay. Maybe the Pride? A fellow JWHL member who had a very good season last year? There were 4 JWHL teams involved in a total of 9 3+ goal losses in this tournament. Should NAHA have told those teams to stay at home?

Stoney Creek? Little Caesars? White Caps? Wizards? Spitfires? All really good teams historically and still pretty good this season. Several teams on this list both won AND lost games by 3+ goals.

I don't know. When you look at this list and consider the quality of most of these programs and where they were last season when planning for this tournament had to start taking shape, I don't think this seems like an unreasonable field. Keep in mind too, there are more than just D1 programs out there. Some of these teams might have more D3 kids than D1 kids or vice versa, but that doesn't mean there isn't talent out there. A team may not do as well but there may be a few players on those teams who would have been left at home by most of you who came out and played well and caught someone's eye at the D1 level where they wouldn't have been able to do that if they were at home sitting on their couch or playing in some lesser tournament with nobody watching.
