My Stanley Cup Runneth Over

Read on twitter that there are bandwagoners who are calling for Bowman's head for making all these trades right after winning.

Hilarious. :D
Aren't they just adorable?

I can see why it happened, but I'm still not a fan of trading Clutterbuck, as I liked what he brought to the team- aside from what he could/couldn't do for the scoresheet. A good energy guy.

I have not looked into it, but I know on the surface, the Wild had some possible cap issues. Dunno if Buttercup's (actually, am a fan of him, just using the humorous nickname given by Don) salary factored into that.

Re: My Stanley Cup Runneth Over

Last time we lost:

Ladd
Byfuglien
Versteeg
Niemi

This time:
Bolland
Frolik

and re-signed Bickell

Not even close. I'm happy and believe that they may bring a free agent with the freed up cap space.

Despite his game 6 heroics, Bolland was suffering from yearly diminishing returns since 2010 and would have walked after next season. Glad we got some picks.

Frolik was a great pk and will be missed in that role, but his cap hit was a bit much for a 4th liner.

Hope they do well in the future and at least they don't leave Chicago empty handed.

Other losses after 2009-2010 (guys that played 60+ games)
Brouwer
Eager
Fraser
Sopel
Madden
and Huet
(and Campbell and Kopecky a year later) ... I had been repressing just exactly how much talent they had to send out after 2010.

This year, the moves this week appear to free up money to sign/keep the "extended core" intact: Emery, Handzus, Kruger, Leddy, Roszival ...
... while allowing the next generation of young players some time and space to develop.

As of tonight, capgeek says the Hawks are 9.5 million under the cap, so I would think its possible to get the rest of it done from here. (Without more trades.)

Nino makes more (2.75 mil) if he makes the NHL than Cal would have.
The issue was paying Cal 2+ to be a 3rd liner when Nino can provide more offense and is physical as well.
Russo makes it sound like Seto is likely traded and Gilbert may be bought out for the Cap room and an play to upgrade the defense.

Yep. It was a gutting last time around. This time, not so much.

I doubt very much that they re-sign Emery as I believe he wants to start and they picked up some Euro late in the season as the presumptive backup.

I REALLY hope they don't re-sign Zus (as a 2nd line center anyway) as it's time for Pirri and/or LeBlanc to get a shot. I'm thrilled for Zus that he got a Cup and he contributed with 2 HUGE goals, but **** if he didn't look slow at times and he's only getting older.

Leddy is a must, Kruger is a close to must and Rosi would be good to keep if possible. In addition, Toews, Kane and Crawford are due just around the corner. Might not be the worst thing to bank some of that Cap space.

Appreciate the lists assembled by you and Farce Poobah, and agree with your conclusions.

I'd add that for Bolland and Frolik, their trade value was never going to go higher than it was at this point. The old adage of "buy low, sell high" applies. This was a case of selling high. It's always hard to say goodbye to contributors, which these guys obviously were. But if the deals were going to happen, the timing was appropriate.

No one knows if the prospects obtained will pan out. But everyone seems to agree that this year's draft was unusually deep. So getting mostly 2013 picks (as opposed to future drafts) also seems like a solid strategy.

Speaking of Leddy...

:D

I might not have shared this photo, but I'm guessing Shaw could give a crap.

Re: My Stanley Cup Runneth Over

Oh yeah, and Shaw and Kane are the Kings of the World...

Re: My Stanley Cup Runneth Over

I thought the same thing when I first saw that. But upon second glance, Shaw left room for Jesus between them. ;)

Re: My Stanley Cup Runneth Over

Can someone explain to me how the Cal Clutterbuck/Nino Niederreiter trade helps the Wild for salary cap reasons? Nino's cap number is around $3mil. Clutterbuck was at $1.5mil and set to get a raise but how much is he really going to get?

Earlier in the thread, someone noted that Nino has a two way contract that pays him less or some such nonsense.

To most Hawks fans/reporters' surprise, Hawks are negotiating with Emery.

Well that only helps the Wild if he isn't on the NHL team...which he likely will be, just doesn't seem like it helps them that much financially.

EDIT: How it does help is you'd rather spend $3mil on a scorer than a physical player like Clutterbuck.
