The general feeling among the staff is what I'm guessing more than a few viewers saw: the better team didn't win Saturday night. For some reason MSU came out with more urgency. But that's the way it goes ... to much iron, not enough nylon.

What are the odds the kid bolts for the Pro's this summer? Yes, this is what Michigan Hockey fans deal with every summer...

I'm not saying he won't. Saying that could lead to quite a let-down. I'm not saying the son of an NHLer won't bolt either. Perhaps the way the team finishes this out will have some say in people's plans for next season.

MSU had the edge in play on the weekend, agreed. I have not seen MSU play that aggressive since the Tim Kennedy days five years ago.

Like the hole between Matt Crandell's glove, stick and JLA ice? Bill Buckner was on the ice for all five goals against on the weekend.

No. But with the season like the one he's having, he might have quite a few suitors. Good for Torey (and he should go if the money is right), but him leaving before his senior season would wreck MSU defensively.

That said, I have a feeling he stays for his senior season. I have no justification for that feeling, but it's a feeling I absolutely didn't have prior to Andrew Rowe making the early jump.

We would be remiss if something wasn't added about our seniors, given what day it is.

Every one of them in some form or another have been through the ringer, whether it was enduring the nightmarish 2008-2009 season or ending the regular season a year later in 2nd place, only to get swept out in 2 days at home in a most distasteful way. Three that we started with (Warda, Henderson, Conboy) didn't stick around. Those that did have been character-tested, had to abide a coach that, as time has revealed, engendered quite a bit of mistrust.

The one who didn't start out with the 08/09 freshman, A.J. Sturges, has had to battle back from being dealt a bad hand his sophomore year.

And they survived The Program! Even outlasting our captain in the pool! But seriously, I think getting TA as a coach was a nice prize at the end. They're playing hockey the way probably most of them learned and enjoyed playing it in their youth and in juniors. And Sturges is ending his Spartan career the way he should be - playing every game down the stretch and on Senior Night.

So congratulations, Tim Buttery, Matt Crandell, Daultan Leveille, Trevor Nill, Drew Palmisano, Brett Perlini, Mike Merrifield, Brock Shelgren, A.J. Sturges, and - so we don't leave out the most important student of all - the student manager - Sean Lerg.

You made it, because you were the best! And, of course, you'll be missed.

If they somehow played it at Munn tonight I would be a happy man.

I'm assuming Palmy gets the start tonight. Would that be his first start since Northern? I missed who played on the road trip so he may have started against Ferris or OSU and I didn't see it.

I'm going to just repeat what Anastos said about last night and say "Well, it was a win." First period looked like we were on our way to a blow out. Then intermission came. If you want to call what happened in the 2nd and 3rd periods hockey then I guess it was in the academic sense, but it was incredibly sloppy on both ends.

Looking at the standings, we have a shot at the 3rd seed. Unfortunately the OT loss to UM last week has knocked us out of a shot for the second seed. Not only did it take away three points but it also gave them the first and second tiebreakers. With them playing BGSU next week, they're pretty much guaranteed at least 6 points for the rest of the season. On the flip side, WMU plays Ferris next week. That could result in us jumping the Broncos if Ferris keeps playing like the #1 team. Although this whole scenario is based on BGSU not getting any points. if they could somehow force a couple ties or even steal a win we'll have a shot.

I actually thought our offense woke up quite a bit in the 3rd. We had a lot of good scoring chances but I bet like half of those were due to some pretty sloppy turnovers by Alaska. At least one led to a straight up breakaway and a couple more were of the 2 on 1 variety.

Also, did anybody feel like we fell down a lot last night? Not just in scrums but just from skating in general? There wereat least 2 blown great scoring chances due to our puck carrier just biting it and falling on their face with nobody around them.

Alaska's definitely a tough out, for sure. It was really important to get 3 points in that game, and it is equally as important tonight.

Looking at the roster, I am relieved to find that we are not losing Walrod. I was thinking for a while now that he was a senior. I like how he plays and predict he'll have a great senior year.

Perfect night. Senior night, sell out crowd, and the senior goalie goes out there and gets a shut out.

Now onto CCHA bracketology. Western is faltering, and they play a surging Ferris team. UM is surging, and they are playing an awful BGSU team. We appear to be on another upswing, while ND is faltering. So if current trends continue it looks like a 3 seed for us. However, we could get the two seed given the following:
MSU sweep
Anything except a WMU sweep
Anything in BGSU/UM that limits UM to two points or less

EDIT: Also, this is probably directed more toward A Allen as he's the most recent grad: Is there a student discount for playoff tickets? It looks like I'll be able to make Friday of either week (hopefully the second one).

Whelp, another regular season at Munn has come and gone. Seem to get faster every year.

Alaska is a stingy team for sure but we stuck to it and limited mistakes. Good, important win. And awesome for the seniors, especially Palmisano getting that shutout.

Looking to next weekend Notre Dame is pretty wobbly at the moment but we know how that seems to turn out for us as teams like Michigan and Miami were supposed to be on their backs coming into weekends against us. I fully expect Notre Dame to give us all we can handle.

We need to win, as well. A few teams right on our heels and dropping even 1 game in a shootout can cause us to fall out of the top 4 depending on what Miami does. And i certainly don't trust OSU to take care of Miami for us, especially after not playing for 2 weeks.

IIRC, the AD sells $10 single-game student tickets for playoff games.

I kind of wish the AD would give free tickets to Slapshots members (and, hell, even Izzone members) to fill the place out, seeing that MSU's apparently never sold out a home playoff game. But the league, which takes a pretty large chunk of playoff gate revenue, would probably throw a fit over that.

That, or the week after everybody gets back. Of the two playoff series I saw at Munn live, one was during the break, and the other took place the week after the break.

IIRC, the second round of the CCHA playoffs last year took place the week after the break. (Which is kind of a moot point, given that we didn't get that far last season, but, well, you see where I'm going here.)
