That movie and others of its ilk like Revenge of the Nerds are awesome, but would never be made today. (especially post Weinstein) Sad cause they are awesome

You said the same thing I did you just said it a different way. They put out the same thing all the time because that is what the masses want.

No. That is the exact opposite of what I said.

The masses want the same dish every night so Disney gives them that.

Smart people want novelty and "risk" so Disney gives them that.

It's all just product. It's like the "authenticity" that the Deplorables crave. Disney can manufacture that and ladle it out.

Disney is just like a conglomerate record label that has divisions for pop, rap, punk, Christian, and classical. Each division has its own marketing strategy. The people who swear by one genre loathe the music and the people of another genre and actually build their identity on the oppositional marketing the parent company has each division direct at each of the others.

It's Coke vs Pepsi vs beer vs scotch vs "live water." The commonality is moving the product. Everything else is just a means to move the product. The executives and even the creatives in those divisions are probably rotated between them every couple years because their talent is matching content to audience desire.

Honesty is just another thing these companies have learned to fake. But if you're "faking" honesty by delivering honesty because that's what your audience wants... is that even faking anymore, or is it real?

When Disney does movies for smart people those movies will be different and challenging because that's what smart people want. They will do that for exactly the same motive behind them making movies for the dummies be all the same: to maximize market impact and revenue.

Disney takes no risks. TLJ is the closest thing they have taken to one in a franchise style film and even that isnt THAT risky. (based on the spoilers I know)They dont rock the boat they never have and they never will. That is why they make $6 billion at the box office.

Its like WB and TV...they make shlocky sitcoms that are all all a variation of the same formula (going back to the friggin 80s) with the same stories just repackaged. They are rather stale, often boring and certainly repetitive but they get great ratings, last for a decade and go into syndication forever. (which is why WB studios is dominate in the TV market) Or it is like any one hour drama on CBS (or NBC back when they mattered) it is all the same show with the same scripts just different actors and different lines. It is formulaic, it is easily digestible, it tends to looked down upon by many yet gets huge ratings, ridiculous buy rates, lasts 10-12 years and lives on forever in syndication. (before ESPN crapped the bed you could use their programming as well)

It is a tried and system, find what works and run with it. Sure you might switch things around a bit or add a little pathos to make it seem smarter but it is all the same. Disney does that with films. This risk you say they take doesnt exist. Even when they were doing "Indy" stuff it was never risky. Disney is like the NFL it is all about the brand. They wont do anything that damages the good name of Disney.

But we are rather off topic here...should probably get back to movies in general not my rantings about movie studios

Look, when it comes to that, there has never been a movie made by a major American studio that had the kind of risk that is worthy of the name. You're never going to get anything groundbreakingly original or genuinely thoughtful because those movies by definition will appeal to perhaps 1% of the entire public. Studio movies are a mass medium only profitable with bulk sales. So you'll get "original" movies like Mulholland Drive, Brazil, or Memento, still very safe and sanitized. Now, I like all of those movies, and compared to the summer blockbusters or the comic book franchises they are the equivalent of "My Dinner with Wittgenstein," but they sure as sh-t aren't Holy Motors, Un Chien Andalou, or Santa Sangre.

I do. My preference is unannounced flash screenings at the back of the old YMCA. On super 8, of course.

To be fair I havent heard of half the movies that are out currently and I mean the big studio releases. People could say random words and I would buy they are probably films out right now. That isnt being a hipster that is just being lazy

(I couldnt even tell you what is up for big awards...or what actors/actresses made films in the last year)

Plus I cant be a hipster since I dont drink microbrews, dont have a d-bag mustache, dont wear old timey clothes and skinny jeans and enjoy way too much awful TV whilst not watching a lot of "THE GREATEST SHOWS EVAH!!!111!"

I disagree but that is fine. Disney doesnt hide who they are or how they do things. They are to movies what Apple is to computers.

Maybe "Disney is to movies as McDonalds is to fast food" ? People know exactly what they are getting, it is good enough, and so it satisfies.

As you point out, if you want mass appeal, you have to reduce the elements of differentiation that would appeal to a more discerning taste: the difference between mass consumption and a fine restaurant: but a fine restaurant may be steak house, French, Italian, Indian, etc. which by necessity has a niche appeal.

I think the internet and something like youtube if it were not owned by Google would be the recipe for the latter when it comes to films. Sort of what Netflix tries to do with "television" series.

No, that's network TV. Disney is Morton's Steakhouse. Very expensive, high quality. You know that what you will get will make the nut, and you will pay top dollar for it. There's nothing "authentic" about it, but you're entertaining your business partners or your father in law's estate lawyer and the last thing you want is a surprise.

Christian Mingle: The Movie is so brazenly artificial and inauthentic that it almost begs to be ignored; not reviewed, not analyzed, and not even discussed, just quietly, humbly passed by as other films nudge it out of the limelight and into obscurity. Criticized in the past were films like Jobs and The LEGO Movie, for allegedly being nothing more than product placement for Apple and LEGO, respectively, despite bearing actual story lines, characters, and thematic depth; on the other hand, Christian Mingle: The Movie is a film so deeply-rooted in insincerity, it disrespects its actors by giving them shallow human characters with not a shred of humanity to be found all in the means of promoting an already ubiquitous dating website.
