Baby Driver:

Love. Love. Love. The ONLY reason I didn't give it 5/5 stars on Netflix is that the final chase/whatever you want to call it was a little overboard. I get that it was needed in a story like this, but still....

The little things like the lyrics on walls/trees, the tinnitus placements, elevated it even beyond the genius soundtrack. The soundtrack was like if Scorcese and Tarantino had a love child and decided to choose soundtracks as his or her sole purpose in life. The stylings of the movie was awesome, with the vibrant colors in the locales, etc. And don't get me started on Ansel Elgort (Baby). Played that role PERFECTLY. As for Jon Hamm's character? Hell to the yes. Don Draper he ain't. Not in this movie.

HIGHLY recommend.

Saw Thor finally. Solid movie though I think my lack of knowledge of marvel's universe in general prevents me from appreciating this as much as I do Dark Knight after having read Dark Knight, the Killing Joke and The Long Halloween.

It's a huge financial commitment I'm sure but where should a novice start on some of the marvel stuff?
What are the go-to books like the DC ones I referenced above?

It really depends on what characters you want to follow. Marvel Unlimited is $10/month or $70/year and gets you access to most major comics that are out there.

If you want events: Civil War and Infinity Gauntlet/War/Crusade are direct tie-ins to the movies (but the movies are not direct adaptations. You'll get a new story out of it). You can find these events on Marvel Unlimited and there are reading orders all over the net for all the tie-ins. If you want to venture into X-MEN territory, Dark Phoenix is a good read.

For individual characters, I'm currently reading the "Welcome Back Frank" run of PUNISHER by Garth Ennis. Tony Stark's movie character comes from stories like "Demon in a Bottle" and "Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D." which came out of Civil War. Hulk has "World War Hulk" and "Planet Hulk". I haven't read Thor much, but "Siege" would probably be fair game.

The Killer

A man looking for his hitman father in the badlands of Brazil becomes a feared killer himself. A little convoluted at times, but it all gets tied together at the end. Worth a watch.

So far, I am not looking forward to The Last Jedi. I was really disappointed in The Force Awakens, to me it came across as an inferior remake of A New Hope, and so far the trailer I saw for The Last Jedi makes it look like it will be an inferior remake of The Empire Strikes Back. :(

I loved force awakens. Yes, it ripped IV but the new characters/actors were fantastic. Adam Driver delivered a performance that is almost exactly how I would have pictured anakin if they'd have gotten a good actor to play that role.

Having said that, I would also be massively disappointed if Last Jedi hews close to empire in storyline.

If Rey leaves training early to help her friends that would just about drive me out of the theater.

But...Disney signed Johnson to write his own trilogy and where is the precedent for that? He must have slayed on this script.

Hammill is saying his most important (possibly most consequential of any line) line in the movie is "this is not going to go the way you think"
Sounds good to me.

Also...this may not mean anything in the end but every other Star Wars logo/title has been yellow. This one is red. Get ready for a real downer of an ending. I just hope Abrams doesn't try to lighten the mood too much in episode 9.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

I loved Force Awakens when I saw it but it has soured over time. I havent watched a second of trailers for Last Jedi but will see it just not on opening day. (unless my buddy wants to go since we see these types of films together) My buddy informed me enough on what the rumors are for me to be interested but not chomping at the bit to see it.

I think Star Wars has hit critical mass for me.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

I loved Force Awakens. I still love Force Awakens. If the rumors I heard are correct this won't be anything like Empire.

I hope you are right. The Yoda trains Luke, Luke trains Rey arc is one sequence that seems a bit too pat.

At least we know no one will be frozen in carbonite..... though I'll bet some main character is taken captive at the end by the forces of the Dark Side who then needs to be rescued in Episode IX....

I did not not enjoy The Force Awakens if that makes any sense....I did enjoy it as a pleasant diversion, it just didn't come across as suitably mythic to me, it was more like following a safe established formula. They did a good enough job. Lukewarm praise. Had it not been for the high bar set by IV, V, and VI....

Speaking of Episode IX, will Jar-Jar Binks turn out to be Snope after all? The Reddit thread on how JJB in Episode I was set up to be a secret Sith lord was quite persuasive, I thought.

Many people didn't. There is something with the mythology that they are likely to use this time that was not part of the Vader arc. If it's true then it will be a great way to differentiate this trilogy and bring conclusion to the Skywalker legacy.

Rey is Palpatine's daughter???

speaking of the mythology, it was said that there are only two Sith lords at any one time, and Palpatine and Anakin both died at the end of Episode VI. So where did Snope come from?

No clue but that's not what I'm referring to.

No I know what you are referring too...I was answering the question Fishy asked. Snope is not a Sith Lord. He is a Dark Jedi but he is not a Sith Lord. That is why he exists despite the Rule of Two.

(it is an important distinction for other reasons as well)

I didn't see his updated post. My bad.

The Sith are a group of Dark side users. They were once legion, then a Sith Lord changed all that (originally in forgotten books, canonized on TV per Disney). Details are irrelevant at this point.

That should tell you that there are Force users outside the Sith that can use the Dark Side. Snope is just someone else who established, or brought to prominence, an order of Force users called The Knights of Ren. Just as Maz Kanata is a light side user who is not a Jedi (the Yoda-ish looking woman from the cantina in The Force Awakens), but has no affiliation with any order of users, at least that we've been told.

TFA was vastly superior to the crap that was episodes I-III, so in that sense I enjoyed it. The planet killing weapon that was too easy to blow up bothered me. I wish they had come up with something more original.
