MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Yeah, just like your moronic comment.

I suspect your girlfriends are 12 and like Disney musicals or whatever other garbage is on Broadway now. I love golden age musicals and LLL was an homage to them.

You went to Love Story* and are whining, "this sucks -- I love Michael Bay movies!!!" But I'll be kind. You're a fool.

* However, Love Story sucks except the hockey scene.
Disney? No, try again.
Wow, you're really mad that la la land didn't win, aren't you?

No, I don't care about that (personally I'd have picked Manchester -- better overall movie, LLL was a niche entry that won't appeal to everybody, quite obviously).

I'm not mad, I'm just dismissive of your silliness. Don't worry, though, I'm sure a revival of Cats is coming to your town's regional rep theater real soon. Or maybe you'll get even luckier and it will be Wicked or Jersey Boys!!!

Now get moving. Third period math is starting I wouldn't want you to be late.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

To be fair, musicals are really hit or miss with everyone. I'm not going to fault someone for not liking a musical (or really any movie for that matter). I hated Chicago and thought it was vastly overrated. But I don't like musicals for the most part. What people like is subjective.

Kep, didn't you say The Dark Knight was awful despite almost universal acclaim?

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Gee, insightful. No, it was garbage. And I even like gosling and stone.
I went with a group of girlfriends who even like musicals and they hated it. Just hated it. All of us walked out wondering *** we'd seen.

Bad movies don't win 6 Oscars. You can not like a movie and still appreciate the art. You're not even doing that.

I can see why people get so mad at you in the political thread. I've never even seen a Michael bay movie. And my friends have better taste than Disney or cats.

I can appreciate the director winning at 32- hell of a job with not much experience. Really struggle to appreciate much else

I loved Chicago, however, Roxie Hart (1942) was better.

This is like the aziz ansari snl skit where he's brought into police for questioning after saying he didn't like la la land

Dude *** is wrong with you...your little diatribe is not only completely misguided (I know this person personally) but is completely ridiculous.

Seriously...and I say this with all due respect...shut up you are completely wrong about this and you look like the moron you are insulting her as being. 100%. And I am not talking about the movie I am talking about your childish insults towards someone who doesnt agree with you. You are going full Rover on the bit and you need to step back...

She didnt like a movie you liked, suck it up snowflake the world will survive. ;)

Sure they can...what kind of twisted logic is that? DX proved it by bringing up Crash which was horrid.

What is next...bad songs cant win multiple Grammy's? Bad TV Shows cant win multiple Emmys? Of course they can...

Win six? No. But bad movies do win Oscars. They usually win "Best Sound Editing," "Best Makeup," "Best Visual Effects," or "Best use of a craft service employee named Brian."

6? No. Just no.

That was one of the funniest skits in some time. I haven't seen La La Land yet. I have the screener but haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I also have the screener for Moonlight. Maybe I'll start watching La La Land and 10 minutes in, stop and swap it out for Moonlight. :) Personally, I was hoping for an upset for Hidden Figures. Also, I was just thrilled that Mel Gibson didn't win Best Director.

Those wins a niche specifics. Has nothing to do with the overall film itself.

I did, but I have upgraded it to "meh." I think the experience of watching it in a theater full of fan boys warped my view of its terribleness, though to be fair all of the CGI-generated "action" scenes in it are boring. The dead guy was a good Joker, however -- I recant my dismissal of his dialog, which has held up extremely well, especially since we now live in an actual political post-morality hellscape.

The one I will never relent on is Departed, which is, in the words of our resident Ebert, a flaming pile of garbage.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Wrong. Crash won a bunch of them and it was insufferable drivel.

Dances With Wolves, Shakespeare in Love, and Forrest Gump all won Best Picture, and each of them is mindless, pandering sh-t. You are 100% right on this: Oscar count and movie quality are unrelated variables. Oscar count is almost completely a function of advertising budget and internal politics.
