Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

Any randomly selected 30 minute stretch of the movie stands as a representative sample of the entire movie. I liked it, but after Episode 1 I'm so battered I'd give The Departed a thumbs up.

You also shouldn't be up at 2 am on a work day. Or 1 or whatever it is in those fake non-EST timezones.

I go through bouts of insomnia. Sleep aids scare the pizz out of me.

It does...but not enough for me to really like the film. It becomes apparent about 15-20 minutes later what the changes they made were and where the script got Frankensteined together. The plot makes zero sense but some of the fighting is real cool.

That's exactly what I thought. It's horribly fragmented and the plot line looks like Muhammad Ali drew it.

It's a slower boil than most SW movies (but still better written and acted than E1 or E2 *gag*). I enjoyed it, but I don't know as that it will hold up to repeat viewing.

Probably poorly. The characters are all AWFUL. And if I see Forrest Whitaker in one more movie before I die. It will be too much. I know a lot of people like him, but I really can't stand him. It's been a slow decline of my opinion of him.

Jules And Delores:

Brazilian comedy based on the theft of the Jules Rimet soccer trophy (World Cup) in 1983. It's quirky, and it's very loosely based (basically, the theft and theoried result of what happened to the trophy in real life are the only "facts"). It's a toss-up whether to watch this one or not. I liked it, but it's nothing special at all.

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

Ok. I'm glad I finished it. Totally pivoted like you said handy.

The last 45 or so were actually pretty good. The way they killed everyone off didn't upset me at all like it did with the departed. Spoiler alert. I thought the deaths of a lot of the characters were well done. Some not so much.. But for the most part, it felt authentic by the end.

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

I liked it, and agree on the deaths. That being said, it IS a "bonus" movie of sorts as related to the main movies, so I didn't have that many expectations going into it. Same with all the other "bonus" movies that they are doing. FTR, I'm not into all the books/cartoons/etc like some on here, so I'd expect their opinions to maybe be a little more harsh and/or detailed.

Most of the old books were, more or less, wiped from history by Disney. People need to let go of those old books, and realize that the movies and the few books they've since released are the story now.

The movie actually reminded me of a book they released to accompany one of the games. I've not played the game, but the book was a fun, non-Jedi look at that universe regarding the grit and sacrifice of the unsung heroes of the rebellion.

Gotcha. Never got into those side-projects, even if they were regarded as canon. As a result, I cannot speak on those stories, background, etc. In that regard, I'd say I am generally average goombah mainstream fan of the SW movies.

The movie came out last year you dont need to put spoilers. Plus it is a prequel to Episode 4 so everyone knows the characters are dead ;)

The movie could have been great if they had put any real time into making the story make sense. Half of them were pretty pointless and a lot of the motivations were just bizarre. There were leaps in logic and just too many "***" like moments even for a Star Wars flick.

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

I don't care if it came out last year. I still try to hide the endings of movies just in case. :)

The first forty minutes were pointless.

People dont need to let them go, they just need to realize they arent in canon...and in reality never were. (the only true canon is the movies no matter what LucasFilm said about TV shows and games and books) Pick and choose what you like and make your own canon.

I will say most of the books were better written than Rogue One was. The characters were fleshed out and they had a purpose and reason for what they are doing. Rogie One tried to Disney-fi the War of the Rebellion and it just didnt work. The original plan for the film was much better.

See, I didn't get a Disney feeling at all.

What was the original plan?

But the movie was spoiled 30 years ago when none of these characters show up or were mentioned :p

The first 40 minutes were beyond awful. Hell up until they kill the weapons guy (dont get me started on that stupid subplot) the movie is scraping along at mediocre. And even though the Empire is defeated ultimately because they arent smart enough to secure their hard drives the last 30 minutes saved the movie. I think I gave it a 6 out of 10 after seeing it and I have never once wanted to watch it again.

It depends who you ask. Since the movie made a ton of money the rhetoric has changed about what they were. Clown probably knows better.

The very original plot was an espionage/stealth crime caper story. They wanted to have the Rebellion steal the Death Star plans without anyone realizing until Vader figured it out and the begins the chase for the Tantive IV (Leia's ship at the start of A New Hope). Disney wanted more action added.

I disagree about characters with vague motivations. All of the main characters had pretty clear motivations, though some were only made known with a line or two given. To me that's enough because it should be fairly simple because people only tend to fight a gov't for a limited number of reasons.

*Jyn had been running from an Empire for most of her life, fighting the Empire during some of that time, because its goons killed her mother and imprisoned her father.
*Cassian's (rebel captain) parents were both killed by the Empire when he was young.
*Bhodi (the pilot) got spooked by the Empire while talking with Galen Erso (Jyn's father), realizing how evil the Empire really was.
*Saw (Whitaker) had been fighting tyranny since the Clone Wars - his character actually premiered during the Clone Wars cartoon series, fighting the Separatists that were trying to conquer his world, and lost his only sister during the fight. Some of his backstory was stated in the movie, though at a very high level.
*The two Guardians of the Whills worked for the Jedi, as keepers of the temple, and Chirrut was Force sensitive (some fail out of the Jedi tests even if they have only a small amount of Force connection). They knew what the Empire was from the very beginning, and likely realized that Jyn and Cassian were signals from the Force to help right a wrong. For these two you kind of had to know their roles, as in what the Guardians of the Whills were, in order to understand their motivation within the movie.

As to the others, they were cannon fodder to move along the story.

I would have preferred less action.

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

In retrospect so would I. The original idea was better. It certainly would have given a possible purpose to the Forest Whitaker. Sorry Clown but his whole storyarch was dumb and non-nonsensical except for "hey look that guy found the daughter and now we are going to blow up his planet later cause...well...I dunno."

They could have told the same overall story much better...the beginning stunk of "too many cooks" and the middle (which is usually the best part of these movies cause there is more plot) had the sense of "well we need to move things along to the end where cool fighting and cameos happen so just do stuff so people react in ways that get us there!"

The question I asked myself after I left the theater was "would this movie have been any good if it hadnt been tied to Star Wars"? If this had been a WW2 film about the French Resistance or some Vietnam Era spy movie or a movie about the American Revolution would it be enjoyable? To me it wouldnt have been. It just doesnt do enough...the Star Wars effect definitely helped it. Even my score was probably 2 points higher because it was Star Wars.

I am with Scooby...less action more espionage. I wanted to see the Rebellion, not some meeting where they discuss the Rebellion. This could have been a flick showing the inner workings of the Rebellion, how they infiltrated the Empire on various levels and the dangers of it. Instead we got Little Orphan Annie goes from Han Solo to Luke Skywalker all in the course of one film because the Empire kidnapped her dad and the Rebellion wanted to kill her dad because Mads Mikkelson probably wanted more money ;)

Excellent creepy movie with obvious underlying social commentary. You see where it's going, then after you're done watching it, and think back to what you saw, there is so much more that you most likely missed. Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this, too. The actress who played the GF was FANTASTIC. Spoiler: her on the stairs with the keys chilled my blood. You know it's coming but you're still completely stone cold stopped by her.

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

Agreed on your spoiler. The one little tiny question is....

Was she hypnotized by her family to get the men? Or was she just as cold-blooded as her family? There are arguments either way....

I don't do scary movies, but I loved this. Saw it in the theater and tcbg saw it twice.
